Certain Men

1 Cor 4:14-17
14 I write not these things to shame you, but as my beloved sons I
warn you.
• Paul's warning was due in part to their aligning with certain
teachers and instructors which drew lines of division in the
family, in the household of saints.
• He spoke of it as immaturity. Stunted spiritual growth.

• He then suggested there inability to receive things from him

that would produce intended growth and maturity.

• Paul, from a position of spiritual authority sought to correct

this.
(again)
14 I write not these things to shame you, but as
my beloved sons I warn you.
15 For though ye have ten thousand instructors in Christ, yet have ye
not many fathers: for in Christ Jesus I have begotten you through
the gospel.
• Spiritually, you've got my DNA
16 Wherefore I beseech you, be ye followers of me.
17 For this cause have I sent unto you Timotheus, who is my
beloved son, and faithful in the Lord, who shall bring you into
remembrance of my ways which be in Christ, as I teach every where
in every church.
KJV

• Paul was not just another man or teacher in Christ, but to

Timothy and those of the church at Corinth, he was spiritual
father.

• Paul is suggesting here some kind of family tree.

• His spirit of ministry would continue a flow to congregations at
Corinth through Timothy's visit being sent of Paul.

• And in every household there is accountability to the father.

o I respect my employer, but not like my father..

o I regard the authority of the police officer, but not like
my father...
o I recognize the governing power of the Mayor, but not
like my father...
o I give accountability to teachers, instructors and
professors, but not like my father...
My father is a certain man, in my life, given by God.
A Certain Man
Acts 8:26-29
26 And the angel of the Lord spake unto Philip, saying, Arise, and
go toward the south unto the way that goeth down from Jerusalem
unto Gaza, which is desert.
27 And he arose and went: and, behold, a man of Ethiopia (no
crowd), an eunuch of great authority under Candace queen of the
Ethiopians, who had the charge of all her treasure, and had come to
Jerusalem for to worship, (one of the benefits of going to worship)

28 Was returning, and sitting in his chariot read Esaias the prophet.

29 Then the Spirit said unto Philip, Go near, and join thyself to this
chariot.
KJV

Acts 8:30-31
30 And Philip ran thither to him, and heard him read the prophet
Esaias, and said, Understandest thou what thou readest?

31 And he said, How can I, except some man should guide me?
KJV (not just some man, but a certain man sent by God)

Acts 8:35-36
35 Then Philip opened his mouth, and began at the same scripture,
and preached unto him Jesus.
36 And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water:
and the eunuch said, See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be
baptized?
KJV

(God has a way of removing the hindrances when we truly begin to

seek Him)

Acts 8:38-40
38 And he commanded the chariot to stand still: and they went down
both into the water, both Philip and the eunuch; and he baptized him.

39 And when they were come up out of the water, the Spirit of the
Lord caught away Philip, that the eunuch saw him no more: and he
went on his way rejoicing. (Some plant, some water...)

40 But Philip was found at Azotus: and passing through he preached

in all the cities, till he came to Caesarea.
KJV

(Wow! What an experience!)

Acts 10:1-6
1 There was a certain man in Caesarea called Cornelius, a centurion
of the band called the Italian band,

2 A devout man, and one that feared God with all his house, which
gave much alms to the people, and prayed to God alway.

3 He saw in a vision evidently about the ninth hour of the day an

angel of God coming in to him, and saying unto him, Cornelius.

4 And when he looked on him, he was afraid, and said, What is it,
Lord? And he said unto him, Thy prayers and thine alms are come
up for a memorial before God.

(Since you are in Caesarea, call Phillip since he is here also. NOT!)

5 And now send men to Joppa (sixty miles south), and call for one
Simon, whose surname is Peter: (not just any Simon, but a certain)

6 He lodgeth with one Simon a tanner, whose house is by the sea

side: he shall tell thee what thou oughtest to do.
KJV
(While God is sending angels with messages to Cornelius…,
He is preparing a certain man to meet him for ministry and
instructions concerning the salvation of his household.)

(…he shall tell you what you ought to do.)

And so Simon Peter, a certain man (specifically chosen) came and

ministered to his household.

Acts 10:43-48
43 To him give all the prophets witness, that through his name
whosoever believeth in him shall receive remission of sins.

44 While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all
them which heard the word.

45 And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as

many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was
poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost.

46 For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God. Then
answered Peter,
47 Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized,
which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we?

48 And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord.

KJV

Saul of Tarsus

Acts 9:1-3
1 And Saul, yet breathing out threatenings and slaughter against the
disciples of the Lord, went unto the high priest,

2 And desired of him letters to Damascus to the synagogues, that if

he found any of this way, whether they were men or women, he
might bring them bound unto Jerusalem.
(Some people think because they are involved in religious duty, they
are fulfilling the will of God)

3 And as he journeyed, he came near Damascus: and suddenly there

shined round about him a light from heaven:
KJV

Encounter
Jesus said; “Saul! What are you doing?”

Paul said; “Who are you?”

Jesus said; “I am Jesus, the one you’ve been persecuting.”

Paul said; “What do you want me to do?”

Jesus sad; “Go on into the city. It shall be told thee, what thou must
do.”
(What Saul did not know was, While God was dealing with him
about his own direction, there was a certain man, chosen by God, to
instruct him.)

Acts 9:10-12
0 And there was a certain disciple at Damascus, named Ananias; and
to him said the Lord in a vision, Ananias. And he said, Behold, I am
here, Lord.

11 And the Lord said unto him, Arise, and go into the street which is
called Straight, and inquire in the house of Judas for one called Saul,
of Tarsus: for, behold, he prayeth,

12 And hath seen in a vision a man named Ananias coming in, and
putting his hand on him, that he might receive his sight.
KJV

(Even with a reputation of murder that preceded him,

God assured Annanias he would be safe.)

(He was a certain man, not a Superman)

Acts 9:15
But the Lord said unto him, “Go thy way: for he is a chosen vessel
unto me, to bear my name before the Gentiles, and kings, and the
children of Israel:”

Acts 9:17-18
17 And Ananias went his way, and entered into the house; and
putting his hands on him said, Brother Saul, the Lord, even Jesus,
that appeared unto thee in the way as thou camest, hath sent me, that
thou mightest receive thy sight, and be filled with the Holy Ghost.

18 And immediately there fell from his eyes as it had been scales:
and he received sight forthwith, and arose, and was baptized.
KJV

(Whatever Annanias instructions were, it must have included

baptism.)
