Tummo Manual

1
This Tummo manual is according to Lama Glenn Mullin’s transmission of the Tilopa, Naropa &
Niguma lineage of the Six Yogas.
With the blessing of Lama Glenn it is written by Jonas Over and revised by Drupon Chongwol
La for the participants of the Six Yogas Series.

● For further details on the practice please refer to the oral transmission and Lama Glenn’s
books on the subject.

● Please make sure to check with your teacher if you are not clear on certain steps of the
practice or are doing intense practice.

● One does not need to do all of the following steps in every single session. One can do
as many steps as one has time and feels comfortable or gets the desired result of clear
light mind.

The Tummo practice is usually done within the Sadhana, either before the Mantra recitations or
directly after.
(For short practice it is also possible to just take refuge and generate Bodhicitta and after the
emptiness mantra and emptiness meditation to instantly arise as Yidam and then directly go into
Tummo practice.)

We are the Yidam and proceed as follows…

(We can blend in here the Ah Purification practice of Niguma with the Dharmodaya in the head.)

We do the Yantras
● 9 Round breathing
● Vase Breathing
● Belly Movements (5 different movements)
● Chiropractic exercise - turning to the right and left
● Shooting the Bow
● Lifting and Pulling
● Heaving like a Dog
● Shaking

(After the Yantras we can blend in the practice of the “Four Flames” as well as the exercise with
the “Dharmodaya below the Navel and the syllable Ram”.)

2
We do Empty Body meditation

And then:...

Meditating on Channels, Chakras and Syllables

We have a blue central channel, a red right side channel and a white left side channel. The side
channels enter the central channel four finger widths below the navel.

Now the chakras are forming:

(When visualising each of the chakras we can also take Vase Breaths. Can be just one Vase
Breath per Chakra or multiple. We put more emphasis on the Navel chakra than on any other
Chakra.)

● We have a white, heart Chakra with 8 branch channels (pointing downward like an
upright umbrella).

● A red, Throat Chakra with 16 branch channels (pointing upward like an upside down
umbrella).

● A white (slightly multicolored), crown Chakra with 32 branch channels (pointing

downward).

● And a red, Navel Chakra with 64 branch channels (pointing upward).

Now we meditate on mantric syllables inside of the Chakras:

(Again we can take Vase Breaths and put our mind on the Syllables.)

● Inside the Navel Chakra on a sun disc is the Ah Tung.

● Inside the Heart Chakra on a moon disc hangs upside down a blue syllable Hung.

● Inside the Throat Chakra on a sun disc stands a red syllable Om.

● And inside the Crown Chakra on a moon disc hangs upside down a white syllable Ham.

Now we rest our mind again on each of the syllables in the Chakras going down.
Ham in crown, Om in Throat, Hung in Heart and then we come to the Ah Tung in the Navel
Chakra (also on the way down we can apply Vase Breathing while resting on each of the
syllables).

We become the Ah Tung which is super hot, blissful and non dual in its nature.

3
Heating up the Ah Tung and Melting the Syllables
We apply Vase Breathing and heat up the Ah Tung. (7, 21, 108 or however many Vase Breaths
one can/ likes to do are applied. In general, one can also practice by time, for example by
setting up an hourglass. Or by sign, until the desired result occurs.)
When breathing out heat and flames rise up the central channel, heating up each of the chakras
and the syllables. (We can also meditate that the heat and flames rise while holding the breath.
We can go up one Chakra per breath or all in one.)
Flames also shoot into the branch channels of the Chakras, loosening them up. Also the knots
of the side channels are loosening up.
Eventually the central channel takes on the color of the Ah Tung due the the heat that has been
generated and the syllables are on the verge of melting.

Now when taking a Vase Breath, the flames rise to the crown and we melt the Ham syllable and
it falls into the Om and is completely absorbed by it. (The red Om doesn't mix with the white
color of the Ham. The white Ham falls into the red Om and all that remains is a red Om.)
(We can do this step, as well as the ones to follow with one Vase Breath or many, like for
example 21.)

Then we melt the Om and it falls into the Hung.

The Hung is being melted and it falls into the Ah Tung.

The Hung falling into the Ah Tung is like oil dripping into fire and the heat and bliss in the Navel
multiplies. (The only syllable remaining is Ah Tung, it never melts.)

We now again become the Ah Tung and rest in blissful Samadhi in Ah Tung (We can do this
with or without Vase Breathing).

Flaring and dripping

We heat up the Ah Tung again by means of Vase Breathing and bring up the heat/ energy as
before. It spreads into the Chakras (that don’t contain syllables anymore) and branch channels,
further opening them up.
We again and again continue to heat up the Ah Tung and raise the fire through the central
channel to the upper Chakras (Either one chakra per breath or all the way up at once. We can
do this 7, 21 times etc.).

Now when we apply Vase Breathing, the heat is instantly at the crown chakra and through the
heat, white bodhicitta nectar is being released from the crown chakra.
The white bodhicitta nectar drips into the Throat Chakra, giving bliss in the Throat (it also
radiates into the branch channels).
Then it further drips down into the Heart Chakra giving again some bliss.
Finally it drips into the Ah Tung and the sun disc and acts like oil that is dripping into fire, giving
rise to an explosion of bliss and heat.
We repeat the downward flow of nectar (7, 21 or however many times it feels good).

4
(We can take one Vase Breath per Chakra; meaning one when the nectar goes from Crown to
Throat, another one when it goes from the Throat to the Heart, and a third one when it goes
from the Heart to the Navel. Or we can go all the way from Crown to Navel with one Vase
Breath.)

Inducing the 4 blisses

(Each step is done with a Vase Breath)
We take a Vase Breath and bring the White Drop that is residing in the Crown Chakra from the
Crown to the Throat and experience bliss in the Throat Chakra.

With the next Vase Breath we bring the Drop from the Throat to the Heart giving rise to supreme
bliss.

Now we bring it from the Heart to the Navel Chakra, giving rise to fabulous joy.

Finally it descends from Navel to the Secret Tip Jewel Chakra, giving rise to simultaneous bliss
and radiance. (The Tip Jewel Chakra is a place where bliss and void naturally reside, as well as
in the crown.) (We stay in the Tip Jewel Chakra for as long as possible, until the intensity of the
experience starts fading.) (In this last descend of the drop, the three channels extend all the way
to the Tip Jewel Chakra. Actually the Channels are always there, just for normal Tummo
practice we visualize them only until four finger widths below the Navel.)

After having stayed at the Tip Jewel Chakra for some time, we bring the drop back up again and
invoke the four joys of the reverse order, which are said to be even more blissful.
First from the Tip Jewel Chakra to the Navel Chakra, giving rise to bliss.

Then from the Navel to the Heart Chakra, giving rise to supreme bliss.

Now from the Heart to the Throat Chakra, giving rise to fabulous joy.

And finally from the Throat Chakra to the Crown Chakra, where we experience simultaneous
bliss and radiance.

We rest in that experience for as long as possible (until the intensity starts fading).

Uniting the white and red drop at the heart

We take a Vase Breath (could also be performed without a Vase Breath) and bring the white
drop from the crown to the Heart and the red drop from the Navel to the Heart.

The drops merge at the Heart and we rest in clear light mind.

5
When we bring the white drop to the heart, all our emotions of anger dissolve and we see a whitish light. Then when
we bring the red drop to the heart, all our emotions of attachment/ desire dissolve and we see a reddish light. When
the drops unite at the heart we experience the black near attainment/ a blackout, this blackout experience can be
very short or very long.
And after the blackout “clear light mind” arises.
These steps are the four emptinesses; white, red, black and clear light mind emptiness. (We don't produce/ envision
them artificially, they happen naturally through the energy movements of Tummo practice.)
Before the experience of the four emptinesses the five element dissolutions and visions appear (They can be looked
up in Lama La’s books).
These experiences can happen at any stage of Tummo practice, so one does not necessarily need to go through all
steps of Tummo practice in order to experience clear light mind.

Vajra Recitation

The fusion of the white and red drop in the heart becomes a blue syllable Hung.
We breathe in white light, hearing/ internally vibrating with the sound Om. We breathe in the
blessing of all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas.

We hold the breath in the syllable Hung at the heart (breath and light are completely absorbed in
the Hung).

And when we breathe out we breathe out red light and hear/ vibrate with Ah.
We breathe out with wisdom.

We repeat the steps above for 7, 21, 108 or for however many times it is possible.

Conclusion
We conclude our practice with dedication/ the usual steps of the Sadhana.
