Past Simple Task

Hello, everyone!

Here you have another challenge. To perform the exercises, you must read and study the table below and open the
course book on p. p. 158 – Irregular Verbs.

The Past Simple of both regular and irregular verbs is done the same way (with the exception of modal verbs, that are not
covered here). Let’s study the table.

P a s t S i m p l e
Usa-se:
- 1. para expressar ações que ocorreram num momento passado (começaram e terminaram num passado
definido);
- 2. para expressar uma sequência de eventos no passado;
- 3. com as palavras e expressões, tais como: then / yesterday / ago / in 2018 ... / when / last week, month

Afirmativa
VERBOS REGULARES (aqueles que terminam em ed):
Sujeito + infinitivo + -ed/d/ied (rever as terminações dos verbos com y)
Ex.: J.K. Rowling published her first Harry Potter book in 1997.

VERBOS IRREGULARES (consultar lista)


Ex.: Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone quickly became a bestseller many years ago.

Negativa – à exceção do verbo To Be


VERBOS REGULARES (aqueles que terminam em ed):
Sujeito + did not (didn’t) + infinitivo -ed/d/ied (rever as terminações dos verbos com y)
Ex.: She didn’t publish her first book in 2001.

VERBOS IRREGULARES (consultar lista) - à exceção do verbo To Be


Ex.: Many other books didn’t become best sellers in 1997.

Interrogativa - à exceção do verbo To Be


VERBOS REGULARES (aqueles que terminam em ed):
Did + sujeito + infinitivo
Ex.: Did she publish her first Harry Potter book in 1997?
- Yes, she did. (repara que se responde com o verbo auxiliar, não com o verbo principal)

VERBOS IRREGULARES (consultar lista) - à exceção do verbo To Be


Ex.: Did many other books become bestsellers in 1997?
No, they didn’t. (repara que se responde com o verbo auxiliar, não com o verbo principal)

O verbo To be é auxiliar dele próprio, pelo que não não faz negativa nem interrogativa com o auxiliar did!

D. The most famous poem in Old English is Beowulf. Complete the text using the correct past simple form of the
verbs in brackets.

Usa-se:
- 1. para expressar ações que estavam a decorrer no passado (ações contínuas no passado); eventos a
acontecer em simultâneo no passado;
- 2. com as palavras / expressões de tempo : while, as , all morning / evening / day / night, etc …
- O Past Continuous forma-se com o auxiliar To Be no Simple Past (was/were), juntando “ing” ao verbo
principal.

Afirmativa
was/were + ing form do verbo principal
Ex.: While she was writing her book, the train stopped.
Ex.: As they were entering the station, they heard a loud noise.
Negativa
Wasn’t/weren’t + ing form do verbo principal
Ex.: when she received the letter from the literary agent, she wasn’t expecting it.
Ex.: They weren’t planning to stay long, but they did.
Interrogative
was/were + sujeito + ing form do verbo principal
Ex.: Was she writing in the garden when they arrived?
Yes, she was./ No, she wasn’t. (repara que se responde com o verbo auxiliar, não com o verbo principal)
Ex.: Were they cooking when she called?
Yes, they were. / No, they weren’t. (repara que se responde com o verbo auxiliar, não com o verbo principal)
