I am choosing the profession of education because I love to work with children and love

to see the growth and potential, they all have. Creating an environment where kids can feel

comfortable and excited to learn is one of my main goals. Past teachers from elementary school

and even high school have inspired me to pursue this career path. I currently work as a Certified

Temporary Tutor at an elementary school, and this has given me a lot of insight on the job. I

substitute when the school needs me to, and this has allowed me to experience working with all

elementary school grades. Being bilingual has benefited me as well because I often work with

student who only know Spanish and I feel that having someone who understands them and can

help them makes them feel encouraged. From what I understand about the current school system,

there is an extreme teacher shortage throughout the nation and the lack of pay has caused many

teachers to leave their teaching positions. The lack of teacher appreciation in districts has taken a

mental toll on many. However, I understand that not everything will be easy in this profession,

but I cannot imagine doing anything else. I am very passionate about this career path and am

excited to see the changes that will come.

I feel that I strongly connect with the reconstructionism philosophy. Kids should learn

about the potential they have to change society. The education system and society are constantly

changing throughout time. Such changes in our systems will teach kids more about their learning

environments and how to adapt to ongoing changes. Kids are much more intelligent than people

make them out to be.

Multiple learning strategies are needed to adapt to the learning needs of all students. I

want kids to learn how to work as a whole group, in small groups, and individually. Learning

about teamwork and independence are important lessons and it will prepare kids for future work

and higher levels of education. Having students that work at different levels will teach me as the

teacher what works and what doesn’t for the classroom. Throughout the year changes will be

made according to how well my students perform. If students need extra time on a lesson or a

different approach, I will take the time to create something new for them to better understand the

lesson. In addition, there will be formative and summative assessments. Formative assessments

will be based on smaller assignments and participation. It will allow me to see the growth

students make and how I will need to adjust my teaching methods. On the other hand, summative

assessments will be used at the end of lessons to see if the students were able to fully understand

the lesson. Based on the summative assessments, I will know how much more time I would need

to spend on the lesson. Multicultural education is essential for all levels. Students should learn

about culture appreciation, cultural values and differences.

There are still a lot of things to learn as I move forward. I still need to learn more about

how to handle specific situations, what strategies work the best with kids of specific ages and

which ones don’t. I currently have an emergency sub license and I plan to get a regular subbing

license after this spring semester. I also plan on continuing working at the elementary school I

currently work at in the same position. In addition, I would like to continue to observe teachers

because I learned a lot from my Field Observation teacher and from some teachers that work at

the elementary school that I work at. From this course and my current job, I have learned a

multitude of lessons and information that will further benefit me throughout my career.
