I believe in listening to loud music.

I’ve been addicted to music since I was a kid. In high school, I wore earbuds during every
class, and if I decided a lesson was boring, I would just subtly turn up my music until all I could
hear was Take It Easy by the Eagles. Thankfully, I was a good student so my teachers never
complained about it. I also remember blowing out the speakers on my first pair of AirPods at 16
years old when I was blasting Kanye during a workout.

However, when I think about my favorite memories with loud music, I always especially
remember my last night in Maine before coming to Penn State. My four lifelong friends and I
were packed into my navy blue 2011 Honda Pilot. I was in the passenger seat on aux duty and
we were on our way to a Mexican restaurant around midnight. Before the car even started, I had
a handful of our favorite 2010’s pop songs queued and as we started moving, Time of Our Lives
by Pitbull came booming out of the speakers. Every window was down and the car was filled
with pleasant August air while everyone in the car danced and sang along to Tonight Tonight,
Stereo Hearts, and Everybody Talks.

The moment I remember most vividly from this drive was when I’m a Believer by Smash
Mouth came on while we were downtown. I remember turning around in my seat during the
chorus and seeing my friends in the backseat dancing and belting the lyrics as best as they could.
So I did what any good friend does. I reached over and turned the volume up to the max.

Even though this was a brief moment from almost 6 months ago, the memory is as clear
as a video in my head. Listening to those pop songs while driving fast on a summer night with
my closest friends became a core memory that I’ll never forget. Loud music is a beautiful thing
that can completely control the moment and turn ordinary times into permanent memories. When
I look back on my favorite memories, I always remember who I was with, and what song was
playing loudly.
