Test 2

Answer all questions.

1. The concentration level of a particular chemical produced changes with temperature.

An experiment to observe the effect of temperature (in degree Celsius, C) on the
concentration level (in mg/L) of the chemical produced is conducted. The following
results are obtained. At each temperature, the experiment was repeated twice
independently under the same experimental condition.

a) Let 𝑚 be the last 2 digits of your student ID. It is given that

30, 𝑚 < 25
𝑚 + 6, 25 ≤ 𝑚 < 50
𝑘={
𝑚 − 20, 50 ≤ 𝑚 < 70
52, 70 ≤ 𝑚.

State the value of 𝑘.

b) Using the 14 observations above, find the least squares regression equation of the
concentration level of the chemical produced on temperature. Interpret the slope
coefficient of the equation obtained.

c) Compute the coefficient of determination and explain what the value means.

d) Is it reasonable to use the equation in part (b) to predict the concentration level of
the chemical produced under the same experimental condition at 5C? Justify
your answer.

2. A lecturer wants to compare the scores of students from five different majors (A, B, C,
D and E) in her class at the end of a particular semester. The following diagram shows
the distributions of the scores for a total of 250 students from the five different majors.

a) Suggest a suitable test of hypotheses to test for the equality of means for the scores
between the five majors. Based on the diagram, justify whether the assumptions
of the suggested test are met.

b) It is given that the within-sample sum of squares is 7888.5 and the total sum of
squares is 29322. At the 5% significance level, perform the test suggest in part a)
and state your conclusion.
