2.3: “The holy books of Islam”

How were they revealed?

Jibrael ‫ عليه السالم‬used to bring the revelation to the Prophets usually. At
times Allah Himself conveyed the message to the Prophet; Our Prophet
‫ ﷺ‬and Musa A.S were honoured to receive the divine message directly.

Why were they needed?

▪ so people don’t have an excuse later
▪ to assist and confirm the Messengers
▪ to judge with justice between people
▪ to guide people to the right path
▪ to connect people directly with Allah

How much time were they revealed in?

➢ The previous holy books were revealed completely one at a time;
Musa A.S brought the entire Taurah at once.
➢ Quran was revealed in a span of 23 years upon our Prophet ‫ﷺ‬

 Are they protected TILL DAY?
➢ The previous Holy Books have been distorted and changed and no
longer carry the word of Allah
➢ However, The Quran is the same to date as revealed, as Allah has
taken its responsibility. Allah says in the Quran:

)٩:‫الذ ْك حر حوإِ اَّن لحهُ حَلحافِظُو حن*} (سورة اَلجر‬

ِِّ ‫{إِ اَّن حَْنن نح ازلْنحا‬
ُ
Indeed, it is We who sent down the Qur'an and indeed, We will be its guardian.

What were the teachings about?

 Taurah:
Hazrat Musa A.S was given Taurah (‫ )تورات‬by Allah on the mountain of Toor - after
the death of Pharaoh and his followers - which contained all sorts of guidance.
Taurah was in “Hebrew” (‫)عبرانية‬, the local language. Quran mentions Taurah as a
book of Allah that we all must believe in.
Some rulings of Taurah mentioned in the Holy Quran:

ِّ ‫حنف ِِب ْْلحنف حو ْاْلُذُ حن ِِب ْْلُذُن حو‬
‫الس ان‬ ِ ْ ‫ْي ِِبل حْع‬
‫ْي حو ْاْل ح‬ ِ ‫س ِِبلنا ْف‬
‫س حوال حْع ْ ح‬ ‫حوحكتح ْب نحا حعلحْيه ْم ف حيها أح ان النا ْف ح‬
ِ ‫لس ِن وا ْْلر‬ ِ
)٤٥:‫اص ۚ (املائدة‬ ٌ ‫ص‬ ‫وح ق ح‬ ‫ِِب ِّ ِّ ح ُُ ح‬
“And We ordained for them therein a life for a life, an eye for an eye, a nose for a
nose, an ear for an ear, a tooth for a tooth, and for wounds is legal retribution.” (5:45)
But then the Jews changed the teachings of Taurah making amendments of their
own choice. Allah confirms their corruption in the Quran:

)٤١:‫اض ِع ِه ۖ } (املائدة‬ ‫ح ح حح‬ ِّ ُ
They distort words beyond their [proper] usages. (5:41)

 Zaboor:
Hazrat Dawood A.S received Zabur that talked mostly about good moral values and
stories of the past. It also helped establish Tauheed along with emphasize on
obeying the previous commands of Allah. It is also known as “Mazmoor” (‫ )املزمور‬in
Hebrew (language). It mainly contains:
▪ praise of Allah
▪ stories of past
▪ asking Allah’s forgiveness
ِ‫ص‬ ِ ِ ِِّ ‫ولححق ْد حكتح ب نحا ِِف ال ازبوِر ِمن ب ْع ِد‬
)١٠٥:‫اَلُو حن* (اْلنبياء‬ ‫ي ال ا‬ ‫الذ ْك ِر أح ان ْاْل ْحر ح‬
‫ض يح ِرثُ حها عبحاد ح‬ ‫ح‬ ُ ْ ‫ح‬
And We have already written in the book [of Psalms] after the [previous] mention
that the land [of Paradise] is inherited by My righteous servants. (21;105)

 Injil:
Hazrat Isa A.S was given Bible after he was sent to Bani Israel as a Prophet. He was
given Injil (Bible) in which Allah changed the status of some Ahkam like the meat of
camel and fishing on Saturday was declared “Halal” now. Also he renewed the
teachings of Allah that were previously distorted by the Jews after being prescribed in
the Taurah.

‫يل فِ ِيه‬ ِ ِْ ُ‫ْي يح حديْ ِه ِمن الت ْاوحر ِاة ۖ حوآتح ْي نحاه‬ ِ ِ ‫آَث ِرِهم بِ ِعيسى اب ِن مرحَي م‬‫حوقح اف ْي نحا حعلح ٰى ح‬
‫الجن ح‬ ‫ح‬ ‫ص ِّدقًا لِّ حما بح ْ ح‬
‫ح ْ حْ ح ُ ح‬
)٤٦ :‫ْي* (املائدة‬ ِ ‫ُه ًدى ونُور ومص ِِّدقًا لِِّما ب ْْي ي حدي ِه ِمن التاور ِاة و ُه ًدى ومو ِعظح ًة لِِّل‬
‫ْمتاق ح‬ ُ ْ‫حح‬ ‫ح ٌ حُ ح ح ح ح ح ْ ح ْح ح‬
And We sent, following in their footsteps, Jesus, the son of Mary, confirming that
which came before him in the Torah; and We gave him the Gospel, in which was
guidance and light and confirming that which preceded it of the Torah as guidance
and instruction for the righteous. (5:46)

 Quran:
The Quran is the last holy book that Allah sent down to people. The Quran was
sent down to the Prophet Muhammad ‫ ﷺ‬through Jibrael ‫ عليه السالم‬in a span of 23
years and then it reached us today by being written down and reported.
The Quran is a spiritual guide for individuals and the community, all classes of
people living in any place or time and for the entire life of man. Everybody, from the
president to a common man, finds a complete code of life in the Quran.

ِ‫ا‬ ِ ِ ِ ْ ‫{و ٰحه حذا كِتحاب أحنزلْنحاهُ مبار ٌك ُّمص ِِّد ُق الا ِذي ب‬
‫ْي يح حديْه حولتُنذ حر أُ ام الْ ُق حر ٰى حوحم ْن حح ْوحَلحا ۚ حوالذ ح‬
‫ين‬ ‫حح‬ ‫ٌ ح ُح ح ح‬ ‫ح‬
)٩٢:‫يُ ْؤِمنُو حن ِِب ْْل ِخ حرِة يُ ْؤِمنُو حن بِ ِه ۖ} (اْلنعام‬
And this is a Book which We have sent down, blessed and confirming what was
before it, that you may warn the Mother of Cities and those around it. Those who
believe in the Hereafter believe in it. (6:92)

Our Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬states in a narration of Tirmidhi:

“Allah's book. In it is news for what happened before you, and information
about what comes after you, and judgement for what happens between you. It
is the Criterion (between right and wrong) without jest. Whoever among the
oppressive abandons it, Allah crushes him, and whoever seeks guidance from
other than it, then Allah leaves him to stray. It is the firm rope of Allah, it
is the wise remembrance, it is the straight path.”

Quran, the miracle of allah:

It is not only a Holy Book, but also a miracle for the entire humanity. No man can
write even a single verse equivalent to that of Quran which proves it is not some
man’s words but indeed, Allah’s word. The former Prophets had a separate book
and miracle but Prophet Muhammad ‫’ﷺ‬s book; Quran, is also his miracle. If he
had a separate miracle and book like the other Prophets, his miracle could only be
seen by the people of his era. But Quran being a miracle is for the entire humanity.
This is what makes Quran superior to all the other Holy Books.

Importance of the holy Quran:

➢ It is considered the eternal miracle of Islam
➢ It is the complete and best guide for living one’s life and seeking Allah’s pleasure
➢ The teachings of the Quran are universal, addressed to all humanity regardless of
their colour and creed
➢ It enlightens man’s soul, purifies his morals, condemns all wrongs, encourages to
do good and calls for the establishment of justice

Characteristics of the Quran:

Why was Quran not revealed in one go?

1. To comfort and console our Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬as he faced opposition
2. To answer the questions of Munafiqeen (hypocrites) & Mushrikeen (polytheists)
when they asked them and tried to create doubts in religion or challenge the word of
Allah

3. It was easier for our Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬and Sahaba (companions) to learn it in small
parts (keep in mind that the previous books were not memorized)
4. Revealing gradually to address the issues and problems as they occured
5. It is a miracle which was not revealed at once, but none of its teachings contradict
with each other

 QURAN’S RIGHTS OVER A BELIEVER:
▪ to bring Iman upon it and have a firm belief that it is Allah's book
▪ to do research in the Quran and think about its teachings
▪ to recite it regularly and try to memorize it
▪ to remain quiet while listening to its recitation
▪ to follow its teachings and act accordingly
▪ to preach others to the word of Allah with wisdom
▪ to respect it whole-heartedly

Names of the Quran:

The Ulema (scholars) have given a total of 90 other names for the Quran, out of
which 55 have been quoted from the Quran itself. However, in reality, they are all its
qualities, and the only real name is “Quran”.

‫القرآن‬ Quran the most read book

‫الكتاب‬ Al-Kitaab the most written book

‫الفرقان‬ Al-Furqan distinguishes between right and wrong

‫الذكر‬ Az-Zikr Allah’s remembrance

‫املوعظة‬ Al- Mau’izah the advice

‫النور‬ An-Noor light of guidance

‫الشفاء‬ Ash-Shifa the cure

‫اَلق‬ Al-Haqq the truth

‫اَلادي‬ Al-Haadi the guide

‫الروح‬ Ar-Rooh with it, is life
