I.CONTENT STANDARD II. PERFORMANCE STANDARD

The learner demonstrates under The learner is able to formulate and
understanding of key concepts of solve problems involving sequences,
sequences, polynomials and polynomial polynomials and polynomial equations
equations. in different disciplines through
appropriate and accurate
representations.

III.LEARNING COMPETENCY
Learning Competency 1: The learner generates patterns. M10AL-Ia-1
At the end of the lesson, the students must be able to:

MOTIVATION “FOLLOW A PATTERN OR NOT?”

A. Activity 1 “WHAT COMES NEXT?”

Direction: Students will be group into three and will do the
activity below. Each item follows a pattern that the students
will analyse in order to come up with what is next.
a) J M M J A O _?
Answer: D - December
b) 1, 4, 9, 25, _?
Answer: 36
c) O T T F F S S E N _?
Answer: T- Ten
d) A B C E F G _?
Answer: I
e) 2, 7, 12, 17, 22, _?
Answer: 27
f) P E M D A _?
Answer: S
g) T Q P H H O N _?
Answer: D-Decagon
h) R O Y G B I _?
Answer: V – Violet

B. Analysis ⮚ How do you find the activity?

⮚ How do you know what comes next?
⮚ What is your basis in determining what comes next?
⮚ Do you think you can determine the succeeding term of
an object, number or event?
C. Abstraction A sequence is a succession of numbers in a specific order.
Each number in a sequence is called a term. The terms are
formed according to some fixed rule or property. They are
arranged as the first term, second term, the third term and so
on.

A sequence with definite number of terms is a finite

sequence, in which the first and last terms are clearly
identified. The first and the last terms of a sequence are
referred to as extremes. And the terms between are means.

A sequence with no definite number of terms is an infinite

sequence. Usually start or end with an ellipsis (three dots).

The Nth term is the general rule for a sequence. It allows

us to find any term in the sequence by substituting the
number of the term into where n is in the rule.

Example:

1. In the sequence 5, 10, 15, 20, 25,... we can denote the

terms as follows:
a1 = 5
nth ruleis :a n = 5n
a 2 = 10

a 3 = 15

a 4 = 20

a 5 = 25

2. In the sequence 3, 5, 7, 9,… the nth rule is a n = 2n + 1.

3. In the sequence -2, -4, -6, … the nth rule is a n = -2n.

4. In the sequence 12, 9, 6, … the nth rule is a n = -3n +

15.
5. In the sequence 4, 16, 64, 256, … the nth rule is a n = 4 n
.
6. In the sequence 4, 25, 46, 6, … the nth rule is i a n =
21n-17.
1 2 3 4 1 n
7. In the sequence 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 , 2 , … the nth rule is a n = n+1
.

“Do it on your Own.”

D. Application Direction: Answer the following items below in a clean sheet
of paper. Read it carefully in order to supply the correct
answer.

Fin the first five terms of the following:

a) n + 4
b) (−2)n
c) 7 n−2
n
d) n=2

Find the nth rule/general rule.

e) -1, -8, -27, -64, …
f) 3, 9, 27, 81, …
g) 3, 6, 12, 24, …
h) 0, 2, 6, 12, …
i) 20, 16, 12, 8, …
j) 1/28, 4/28, 9/28, …
