1. How can nanotechnology address the problems in the environment?

Nanotechnology can address the problems in the environment by

nanotechnology is a field of research and innovation concerned with building
things. Machines are being built to help us and the environment. Thus, with the
help of nanotechnology, we can build machines and tools that will improve and
develop our environment instead of destroying it. Nanotechnological products,
processes and applications are expected to contribute significantly to
environmental and climate protection by saving raw materials, energy and
water as well as by reducing greenhouse gases and hazardous wastes.
Nanomaterials contain special physical and chemical properties that make them
qualified for environmentally friendly products. Adding nanoparticles to a material
may also reduce weight and save energy during transport. Of course, in this way,
it is beneficial for us, humans and along with other living things, for it somehow
reduces our workload, improved and paved a way for a better environment.

2. How can nanotechnology be used in the prevention and treatment of

illnesses?
Nanotechnology has been widely used in a variety of applications
particularly in the field of healthcare where the utilization of nanoproducts has
been emphasized in this modern times. The application of nanoparticles and
surfaces composed of nanostructures, which are utilized by the scientists in
many fields of healthcare research can be used in the prevention and treatment
of diseases. Specific applications for nanotechnology in medicine include the
following: nanoscopes and nanotweezers, novel membranes for cleaning blood,
miniaturized probes for recognizing disease, nano-dots that trace disease, MRI
(Magnetic Resonance Imaging) with better contrast agents and CAT
(Computerized Axial Tomography) scans for improved detection through medical
imaging. For diagnosis and treatment, there are also innovative medicines and
drug delivery systems, such as cancer medicines that only target cancer cells
and antimicrobials (germs). Furthermore, orthopedic implants that treat skeletal
deformities including bones, joints, muscles, ligaments, tendons, nerves, and
skin disorders are more compatible and last longer than conventional treatments.
With nanotechnology, scientists seek to prevent illness, diagnose diseases more
quickly, control disease, treat disease with fewer side effects, and give better
medical aids.
3. What is another example of nanotechnology and how does it work?

Alongside from the examples of nanotechnology that address problems in

the environment as well as in health, such as preventing and treating illnesses, it
is also used in drug discovery and development that covers a vast and diverse
array of technologies coming from the following: engineering, physics, chemistry,
and biology, leading to the birth of a new generation of materials and methods of
their production, otherwise known as nanobiotechnology.

Furthermore, nanotechnology aids in transforming ways in which people

obtain and use energy, such as the utilization of solar panels. It as well involves
manipulating and controlling nanomaterials in a useful way and can be found in
nature, such as hemoglobin, smoke from the fire, volcanic ash, and sea spray.

Moreover, the other applications of nanotechnology, as follows:

Electronics, such as graphene that has emerged as one of the most promising
nanomaterials due to its unique combination of exceptional properties, not only
the thinnest but also one of the strongest materials, conducts heat better than all
other materials, an excellent conductor of electricity, and it is optically transparent
yet so dense that it is impermeable to gases. By this, televisions and computers
today became thinner and smaller as compared to before; Cellular phones
became smarter and more efficient as well. Also, nanotechnology aids in
cleaning water (Water Purification Systems); medicine (Drug Delivery and
Nanomedicine); and Commercial (Sunscreens, which reflect or absorb UV rays
to protect the skin).
However, people should be extra careful of utilizing these, for
nanotechnology is known as well to cause problems, such as in health and many
more.
Altogether, the applications of nanotechnology are endless. It goes from
medical devices and drugs to materials that reduce fuel costs for cars and
planes. It as well increases the efficiency of energy consumption, helps clean the
environment, and solves major health problems.

4. What health condition do you think urgently needs to be treated by gene

therapy? Justify your answer.

For me, a health condition that would be treated by gene therapy is

inherited cancer. From the definition itself, gene therapy is an
experimental technique for treating disease by altering the patient's
genetic material. Therefore, it means that they can replace the cancerous
cells; they can replace it through gene therapy by replacing the cancer
cells so that they can't be widely spread among the other cells.

5. Do you think the average human life span will change 20 years from now?
Why or why not?

Yes, the average human life span will change after 20 years, because we
are living in a vast change world where developments are present every day.
Medical technologies are one of the focuses to sustain health and reduce
mortality rate. Furthermore, with the help of stem cell and gene therapy, people
will surely live longer than expected. Patients who we expect to die or receive
long term medication may avoid death and achieve improved health status. In
this way, people will get to enjoy life more with loved ones. There will also be
more time for dreams and achievements.
