LEARNING TASK 1.1

Reflection Guide:

1.How did you find the music? Do you somehow relate to it?

 I find the music in youtube and I’ll relate that in suffering and unhappiness

2.Among the 2 compositions, which did you like the most? Why?

 “mutya ng pasig” because this song made realize the suffering and unhappiness of a woman
(the mutya) who's fate led her to lose the love of her life. There are two perspectives in the
song. At the first part, you will hear the narrator or poet. He describes the setting and the
woman in the song. And at the latter part, you will hear the second person, a woman,
describing who she was before and what happened to her life and what she wants now.

3. What is your overall impression of the music?

 Mutya ng pasig- The whole song is in a harmonic progression acceptable to European

compositional style. The song is divided into three sections, each separated by a short
instrumental passage. In the opening section, the text sets the stage for the appearance of the
mutya, and ends with the poet's recognition of the ghostly figure. The section ends with a
dramatic cry, "Ito ang Mutya ng Pasig" (This is the Muse of Pasig) and is in the key of Eb minor. It
is then followed by a short section in which the mutya prepares to speak. This musically
functions as a bridge between the first part, in the minor key and the last part which is in the key
of Eb major. As the key changes, the mutya begins to weave her melodious and lyrical tale. The
melody and intensity rise, and in this way bring her back to life. The singer ends with a
triumphant coda. The work follows a conventional Western song form, skillfully changing from
chord to chord, modulating from one key to another, and showing the composer's ability to put
together a well-built art song.
 Hating gabi- it is characterized by a smooth, flowing and gentle rhythm with dramatic intervals.

4. Based on your perception, what are the significant features and unique characteristics of 20th
Century Traditional Composer?

 RHYTHM: Complex, individual rhythms are used, and new rhythms and meters are common
such as polyrhythms and polymeters. MELODY: Melodies are often fragmented, dissonant and
experimental.

Learning Task 1.4 What I have learned?

 My understanding about the 20th Century Traditional Composers is that This music was having a
huge influence toward not only to music, but also to the whole world. They change the concept
of the classical music and rebuild it with new elements and forms and I also learned the 20 th
century traditional composers He is a contemporary composer and conductor who span both
popular and classical worlds “Ryan Cayabyab”, He is known as a "Romantic Nationalist" he is
“Lucio San Pedro”, and He was known as the "Father of Kundiman" he’s Francisco Santiago. He
was a product of both Romantic and Impressionist styles “Nicanor Abelardo”. He was a prolific
composer in traditional Filipino music and wrote

50 masses in Latin and 20 in English “Rosendo Santos Jr.” I realized that Traditional Composers are When
we are talking about traditional music, it is the music of the Philippines from the twentieth century
specifically up to the present music, in particular in which composers have their own style in composing
music, as well as that they not get influenced by the other styles and/or techniques in music, such as the
Western Classical music. One of the examples in traditional music is the creation of kundiman. I love
listening 20th century traditional composer because its 20th Century Musics are more Realistic, and
every song they compose have a Deep Meaning or Stories and it is soothing and relaxing and The reason
why I really appreciate the 20th Century Composers because the way to composer their self is feelings
is very powerful, accompanied by strong rhythms and melodies and expressive emotions.
