Product of the Sum and Difference of Two Terms
The product of the sum and difference of two terms is given where the first and
second terms of the two binomials are the same, hence the only different is the operation
sign, given the general formula:
(a + b) (a - b) = a2 - b2
The general formula (a + b) (a – b) = a2 - b2 is derived using the FOIL method.
(a + b) (a – b) = a2 + ab – ab - b2
Since the two middle terms are opposites, their sum is 0. Thus, the pattern of the
product of the sum and difference of two terms is a2 - b2
Examples:
1. Find the product of ( x + 5 ) ( x - 5 )
Solution:
Let a = x and b = 5
Using the special product of the form a2 - b2, we have:
(x + 5) (x – 5) = (x) 2 –(5) 2
= x2 – 25
-The teacher will provide activity sheet for the learner to practice the newly learned skill.
-Learners will be reminded to observe DOH protocols in doing the activity.
-They will be given (8) minutes to finish the activity with the given RUBRIC.
Directions: Complete the crossword puzzle by finding the indicated products below. After completing the
puzzle, discuss with a partner the questions that follow.

G. Independent Practice – YOU DO IT
( Evaluating Learning )
•The teacher will give an additional activity for independent practice.
What is the name of the tallest twin tower building in Malaysia? Decode the answer
by solving the product of the sum and difference of two terms . Write the letter of your
answer corresponding to the item in the box provided below.
O ( 3x + 10 ) (3x – 10)
R ( 2x + 7 ) ( 2x - 7)
P ( 5x – 3y ) ( 5x + 3y)
E ( x – 3) ( x -3 )
T ( 4x – 1) (4x + 1 )
N ( 5x – 1) (5x + 1 )
A ( x – 8) (x + 8 )
S ( 7x – 1) (7x + 1 )
Answer: PETRONAS
Petronas Twin Tower is an example
of Symmetrical Structure.
Symmetry
-indicates that you can draw
an imaginary line across an object
and the resulting part are mirror
image of each other.
