Total: 60 Duration: 3 hours
(Answer ALL Questions)

1. In a conventional centre lathe, the apron constant = 40, rpm of lead screw=150, rpm of lathe
spindle=300, transmission ratio between worm wheel and pinion in mesh with rack= 1/2 and that
between worm wheel and transverse screw=1/3, pitch of transverse feed screw=6mm. Find
transverse feed.

2. Draw a schematic to show how telescopic shaft is used to transfer the motion from spindle motor
to work table for realisation of feed velocities given to the work table.

OR

Using the mechanical indexing head having an index plate with hole numbers, 15,16,17,18,29, 20
adopt compounding index approach and determine how to index a work specimen for 1/51 and
1/12 of a rotation. How such indexing is done in a CNC milling machine?

3. A NC controlled ball screw driven milling machine X table is required to be moved at 200
mm/min. If the ball screw is having double-start thread of 2 mm pitch, how many pulses per
second does the stepper motor has to receive to realise this speed. The ball screw is mounted
with a spur gear assembly with gear ratio 4:1 (reduction)? Determine the BLU of the unit if the
stepper motor has 200 steps. Why are encoders and linear scales used in modern servo
controlled CNC machining centres?

4. Write down the canned cycle-based part programme to machine the dotted portion only.
5. A. For precise measurement of 37.25 mm what is permissible maximum value of the least count
of the scale in a vernier caliper. Determine the relation of matching graduations of main scale and
vernnier scale.

B. In an autocollimator is capable of giving a measurement resolution of 1 arcsec. Determine its

resolution in radian.

6. Refer to the relevant ISO table/chart, determine the type of fit corresponding to H7g6 and K7h6

7. For a 200 pressure angle gear having 40 teeth and module 3, calculate the plug gauge diameter
and what should be the distance over the plugs placed on opposite faces of the gear.

8. A part is having a convex surface. How do you measure its radius of curvature with the help of
two same dia rollers and Vernier Calliper.

9. A CMM is used to check a half bore and the reading obtained with a 2 mm dia probe in a non-
compensated mode are: P1: (55, 110) P2: (31, 70) P3: (55, 27.5)

10. Define and explain the following symbolic representation (GD&T) using a suitable sketch:
