- Objective is to get the work done in systematic and safe manner to avoid unnecessary resource
consumption.
2. References
- Project documents, viz. Quality plan, EHS plan, LEED and Technical Specification of the project.
- IS codes to be referred:
3. Control Measures
- Check and initiation of procedure to remove underground & overhead utilities present if any, which can
obstruct excavation work, viz. electrical power cables, water pipeline or any other service line in
- Check for the availability of space for vehicle movement and planning the same.
5. Material
Murrum
1. Murrum for backfilling shall be freshly excavated, free from vegetation, boulders, silt and clay.
Murrum can be either hard or soft.
2. All backfill material other than rubble shall be free from roots, grass and rubbish. It shall be

reasonably well graded and of maximum size 80 mm. All lumps and clods of size larger than 80 mm
shall be broken down using wooden mallet.
3. Material brought from outside sources shall be approved by Quality Engineer at the place of source
and visually checked during its delivery and unloading at site throughout the period of backfilling
work.
4. Backfill material (Murrum and rubble) shall be tested in laboratory at time of approval from source.
5. Change in source of materials to be avoided. If unavoidable, the new sample and source shall be
again approved by Quality Engineer before commencement of supply at site from fresh sources.
6. 6.All backfill material shall be tested in laboratory once at the time of approval for each source.
Water
Water should be clean and free from dirt and organic matter.
(Testing shall be done in laboratory only once at the time of approval of source)

1) Excavated materials which are useful shall be stacked in regular heaps, bunds with regular slopes. Such stacking
shall be done within the lead (50 m or as specified).
2) All softer material shall be laid along the Centre of heaps. The harder and more weather-resisting materials
shall be stacked to form the casing on the sides and the top of heaps of softer material. Ensure Sprinkling of water to
suppress the dust exposure.
4) Soft and hard rock shall be stacked separately.
5) Murrum, Sand and Rubble brought from outside shall be stacked separately in regular heaps of height not more
than 1.5m. Stacking shall be done as near to the place of filling as possible to avoid excess lead. Berm width shall not
be less than 0.8m.
6) For borrowed material, stacking shall be done truck-load wise all along the edge of excavated pits. Material
shall not be stacked against an existing wall.
7) Toe boards shall be provided to prevent stacked material from falling back into the excavated pits.
8. Work Methodology
- All underground cables are taken care of with respective authorities before planning the backfilling
work.
- If depth is more than 1.5m layers should be 450mm on ground to reach 1.5 m depth with the use of

- Marking on the pedestal/ column/ footing to be done for 300mm with the help of paint or suitable
device.
- The soil layer shall then be watered adequately and compacted to minimum 95% of Standard Proctor
Density for soil other than sand and 85% in case of sand. Compaction shall be carried out at optimum
moisture content (OMC). Soil after compaction shall be free from pockets underneath.
- If the soil is excessively wet, it shall be allowed to dry sufficiently before compaction. (Approximately
OMC should be maintained)
- Water to be poured for consolidation and Compaction shall be done with suitable mechanical
equipment such as 2 Ton vibratory roller, as suitable for the area to be compacted. In areas where
mechanized compaction cannot be done, hand compaction or plate compactor shall be resorted to as
directed by the Site Engineer. Overall compacted thickness of soil shall be as per drawing.
- Consolidation methodology as proposed earlier to be repeated for all layers of backfilling.
- Backfilling around water retaining structures done only after testing of structures against leakage.
- A site engineer/supervisor and a safety executive/Stewart are required to continuously monitor the
activities.
9. FREQUENCY OF TEST
Structural Fill
a. One test Whenever there is a change of gradation or placement conditions.
b. One test every 150mm thick compacted layer at every 80-100 m2.
General Fill
a. One test for each 3000 m3 placed.
b. One test Whenever there is a change of gradation or placement conditions.
- All the tests should be conducted in joint observation between client/PMC representatives.
- Register to be maintained for consolidation where testing is not done with proper assurance of
compaction.
- Test reports and test observations should be noted and documented for submission.
