ECONOMY AND AGRICULTURE OF RAJASTHAN

Rajasthan's economy is primarily agricultural and pastoral based. Wheat and barley are cultivated
over large areas, as are pulses, sugarcane, and oilseeds. Cotton and tobacco are the state's cash
crops. There are mainly two crop seasons. The water for irrigation comes from wells and tanks. The
Indira Gandhi Canal irrigates north-western Rajasthan.

• The main industries are mineral based, agriculture based, and textiles. Rajasthan is the second
largest producer of polyester fiber in India.

• The Pali and Bhilwara District produces more cloth than Bhiwandi, Maharashtra and the
Bhilwara is the largest city in suiting production and export.

• Pali is the largest city in the production and export of cotton, polyester and Rubia blouse
piece. Several prominent chemical and engineering companies are located in the city of Kota,
in southern Rajasthan.

• Rajasthan is pre-eminent in quarrying and mining in India.

• The state is the second largest source of cement in India.

• It has rich salt deposits at Sambhar, copper mines at Khetri, Jhunjhunu and zinc mines at
Dariba, Zawar mines at Zawarmala for zinc, Rampura Aghucha (opencast) near Bhilwara.

Agro climatic conditions in Rajasthan:

Rajasthan lies in 3 Agro - climatic Zones namely

Zone–VI: The Trans Gangetic Plains region,


Zone–VIII-Central Plateau & Hills region and
Zone–XIV- Western Dry region.

Rajasthan is alienated into 9 sub zones. Each zone has extraordinary characteristics of its own.

Arid Western Plain • Parched area of Rajasthan state where the yearly rainfall
fluctuates from 10-40 cm, frequently unpredictable.

• Found in Jaisalmer, Barmer, Bikaner, Jodhpur and


Churu districts

Irrigated North Western • Characterised by tremendous dryness, manifested with


Plain soaring summer and low-down winter temperatures

• The normal yearly rainfall is around 40 cms.

• The total Ganganagar region is an aeolian and alluvial plain


formed by Ghaggar river

Intermediary Plain of Inland • Region is covered with sand dunes and sandy plains.
Drainage
• Rainfall of 300-400 mm

• The drainage is not intense. The streams fade away in the


sandy meadows after casing some detachment

Transitional Plain of Luni • Present between western arid area and the Aravalli ranges in
Basin the districts of Pali, Jalor, Sirohi and Jodhpur

• Semi-arid with annual rainfall of 30-50 cm

• Drained by Luni river

Semi-Arid Eastern Plain • Occasional sand dunes, buried pediments, scattered hills
with large area under alluvium.

• Average rainfall of 50– 70 cm

• This area consists of 4 districts, Dausa, Jaipur,


Ajmer and Tonk. Banas river and its tributaries forms an
affluent productive plain

Flood Prone Eastern Plain • The area has affluent alluvial soil the lushness of which is
restocked annually by flood of the Ghambhiri and Banganga
rivers

• The yearly average rainfall is 75 cm.

• Found in Bharatpur, Dhaulpur and Alwar districts

Aravalli hills and Sub Humid • The area has a reasonably tepid weather in summers and has
Southern Plains mild winters.

• It has the inter-mountain flat terrain, intensely dismembered


by rivers and streams

• The yearly rainfall fluctuates from 50 - 95 cms.

• Found in Bhilwara, Rajasmand, Sirohi, Udaipur and


Chittorgarh districts

Humid Southern Plains • The region has moist climate with a standard rainfall of over
70 cms annually.

• It consists of lower Aravalli hills with impositions of black


lava stones

• Dungarpur, Banswara and Pratapgarh districts

Humid South-Eastern Plains • Found in districts of Baran, Kota, Jhalawar, Bundi and Sawai
Madhopur

• Highest rainfall in the state of around 70-100 cm

• Fertile region used for farming of cotton, opium and


sugarcane

• Chambal River is the major river of this region
