QUADRILATERALS

A quadrilateral is a four- sided polygon.

Kinds of Quadrilaterals

Three noncollinear points always determine exactly one plane. When there are four
points, one of these points may necessarily be in the same plane as the other three.
Quadrilaterals can be called as plane quadrilateral when four points are in the same plane.

Definitions of Different Quadrilaterals and Its related terms

 A parallelogram is a quadrilateral with two pairs of parallel sides.

 A rectangle is a parallelogram with four right angles.
 A square is a rectangle with four congruent sides.
 A rhombus is a parallelogram with four congruent sides.
 A trapezoid is a quadrilateral with exactly one pair of parallel sides.
 Supplementary angles- two angles whose sum of the measures is 180°
Consecutive angles are supplementary

congruent.
O 5 R

2. A quadrilateral is a parallelogram if

congruent.

67° 113°

3. A quadrilateral is a parallelogram if
115° 65° pairs of consecutive angles are
supplementary.

65° 115°

4. A quadrilateral is a parallelogram if
the diagonals bisect each other.

5. A quadrilateral is a parallelogram if
one pair of opposite sides are
congruent and parallel.

6. A quadrilateral is a parallelogram if
each diagonal divides a
parallelogram into two congruent
triangles.

Focus Discussion 2: PROPERTIES OF PARALLELOGRAM

Using the properties of parallelogram, we can now identify how quadrilaterals are considered
parallelogram.

3
PROPERTY 1: In a parallelogram, any two opposite sides are congruent.

H O Given the quadrilateral HOPE:

If HO PE and OP HE, then, quadrilateral
HOPE is a parallelogram.
E P

PROPERTY 2: In a parallelogram, any two opposite angles are congruent.

J Given the quadrilateral JUST:

T
If JUS STJ and UJT TSU,
then, quadrilateral JUST is a parallelogram.
U S

PROPERTY 3: In a parallelogram, any two consecutive angles are

supplementary.
Given the quadrilateral LIFE:
I F If I and F are supplementary,
F and E are supplementary,
E and L are supplementary,
L and I are supplementary, then,
L E quadrilateral LIFE is a parallelogram.

PROPERTY 4: The diagonals of a parallelogram bisect each other.

C A Given the quadrilateral CANE with diagonals

CN and AE. If CN bisects AE bisect and vice
H versa, then, quadrilateral CANE is a
E parallelogram.
N

PROPERTY 5: A diagonal of a parallelogram divides the parallelogram into two

congruent triangles.

A S Given the quadrilateral AXIS with diagonal AI.

If ∆AXI ∆ISA, then, quadrilateral AXIS is a
parallelogram.
X I
This time, we will now apply the properties in order to find the measures of angles, sides and
other quantities involving parallelogram.

Given: .

CD = EF
- write the correct equation
What is the value of x? - addition property of equality

- simplify

- measure of side CD
- substitution
How long is CD?
- simplify
CD =8cm

CF = DE
(y+3)cm=(2y-7)cm
y+3
what is the value of y?

-measure of side CF
-substitution method
How long is CF? -simplify

Given: Diagonals CE and DF meet at G. FG is 8cm and CE is 13cm.

Since the measure of FG=8cm which is half

How long is DF? the measure of the diagonal DF.
Therefore, the measure of DF=16cm.
Since the measure of CE=13, and CG is half
How long is CG? the measure of CE, therefore the measure of
CG=6.5cm.
