Problem Set 8

1) Water (cp = 4180 J/kg K) enters the 2.5-cm-internal diameter tube of a double-pipe
counterflow heat exchanger at 17℃ at a rate of 1.8 kg/s. Water is heated by steam condensing
at 120℃ (hfg = 2203 kJ/kg) in the shell. If the overall heat transfer coefficient of the heat
exchanger is 700 W/m2 K, determine the length of the tube required in order to heat the water
to 80℃ using the log mean temperature difference (LMTD) method. (Answer: 129.5 m)

2) A shell-and-tube process heater is to be selected to heat water (cp = 4190 J/kg K) from
20℃ to 90℃ by steam flowing on the shell side. The heat transfer load of the heater is 600
kW. If the inner diameter of the tubes is 1 cm and the velocity of water is not to exceed 3 m/s,
determine how many tubes need to be used in the heat exchanger. (Answer: at least 9 tubes)
3) Hot water at 60℃ is cooled to 36℃ through the tube side of a 1–shell pass and 2-tube
passes heat exchanger. The coolant is also a water stream, for which the inlet and outlet
temperatures are 7℃ and 31℃, respectively. The overall heat transfer coefficient and the heat
transfer area are 950 W/m2 K and 15 m2, respectively. Calculate the mass flow rates of hot
and cold water streams in steady operation. (Answers: 3.63 kg/s for both stream)
4) Water (cp = 1.0 Btu/lbm ℉) is to be heated by solar heated hot air (cp = 0.24 Btu/lbm
℉) in a double-pipe counterflow heat exchanger. Air enters the heat exchanger at 190℉ at a
rate of 0.7 lbm/s and leaves at 135℉. Water enters at 70℉ at a rate of 0.35 lbm/s. The overall
heat transfer coefficient based on the inner side of the tube is given to be 20 Btu/h ft 2 ℉).
Determine the length of the tube required for a tube internal diameter of 0.5 in. (Answer:
162.0 ft)
5) During an experiment, a plate heat exchanger that is used to transfer heat from a hot-
water stream to a cold-water stream is tested, and the following measurements are taken:

The heat transfer area is calculated to be 0.0400 m2.

(Answers: (a) 1724 W (b) 3017 W/m2 ℃ (c) the heat exchanger is not adiabatic so heat loss
16.4% and heat transfer efficiency 83.6% (d) effectiveness 44.4% and NTU 0.697)
