LET’S TALK ABOUT OUR LESSON

Go over these sentences. These are about your answers in Activity 1.

Notice the difference between the sentences in column A and column B:

A B
1. Corona virus causes COVID- 19. COVID-19 is caused by Corona virus.
2. Farmers plant rice, corn, vegetables Rice, corn, vegetables and other
and other crops. crops are planted by farmers.
3. God created the world. The world was created by God.
4. Dr. Jose Rizal wrote the El El Filibusterismo and Noli MeTangere
Filibusterismo and Noli Me Tangere. were written by Dr. Jose Rizal.
5. Julian Felipe composed the lyrics of The lyrics of Lupang Hinirang were
Lupang Hinirang. composed by Julian Felipe.
 What difference did you notice?
 Do the sentences in Column A and column B mean the same?
The sentences in Column A are in the Active Voice while the sentences in
column B are in the Passive Voice. The meaning is still the same. They only
differ on how we write them.
In English, there are two voices of verb, active and passive voice.
Voice of the verb: The voice of the verb tells whether the subject of the
sentence performs or receives the action.

ACTIVE AND PASSIVE VOICE

1. Active Voice: A sentence is in the active voice if the subject is the

doer of the action.
Active voice follows the pattern: doer + verb + receiver of the action
(doer) (verb) (receiver of the action)

Example: 1. Mr. Lopez donated laptops.

subject action
(Mr. Lopez is the doer of the action- donated)

(doer) (verb) (receiver of the action)

Example 2: The teachers are preparing modules for the opening of classes.
(the teachers are the doer of the action- preparing)

 For more examples, go back to the sentences in Activity 3, column A.

 Remember that the active voice is straight forward and clear. It
focuses on the subject doing the action.

3. Passive Voice: A sentence is in the passive voice if the subject is the

receiver of the action expressed by the verb.

Example: 1. Laptops were donated by Mr. Lopez.

action receiver of the action

 For more examples, go back to the sentences in Activity 3, column B.

Notice this:
 In the active voice, the subject Mr. Lopez is the doer of the action.
 In the passive voice, Mr. Lopez becomes the receiver of the action.
 In the passive voice, the subject is Laptops.
 In the active voice Mr. Lopez donated laptops, the verb donated is
in the past tense.
 In the passive voice Laptops were donated by Mr. Lopez, the subject
is laptops which is plural; that is why we used the be- verb were
before the main verb donated. We also use the word by before the
receiver of the action, Mr. Lopez.

Active voice: Mr. Lopez donated laptops. (donated is

past tense)
Passive voice: Laptops were donated by Mr. Lopez.
(laptops is plural, so we use were)
Active voice: God created the world. ( created is past tense)
Passive voice: The world was created by God. (World is singular. So we
use was
