1. GENERAL
1.1 OBJECT
The aim of this document is to define the multidiscipline graphic plant symbols to be used
for the design of production of hydrocarbon plants or similar. The graphic symbols make
reference to the following documents:
• Process flow diagrams (PFD) and process and instrument diagrams (P&ID)
• Electrical / logical diagrams
• Pneumatical / hydraulic diagrams
• Layouts, equipment arrangement, piping installation, typical of installation
• Hazardous areas

1.3.2 Symbology details for Process Flow Diagrams (PFD) and Process & Instrumentation
Diagrams (P&ID)
1.3.2.1 Sizing criteria
The symbol representation does not normally foresee any scale, as their dimensions shall
be chosen through appropriate parametric procedures on the basis of the complexity of the
plants to represent.
Line components, manual and instrumentation valves that may have a 40% reduced
dimension and the equipment rich in nozzles, for which it will be expressly declared the
possibility of parametric scale, are an exception.
1.3.2.2 Process Flow Diagrams (PFD) and Process & Instrumentation diagrams (P&ID)
Graphical symbols for PFD and for P&ID, where the process information will be completed
with the identification of lines and of all components, are reported in the paragraphs of this
specification.
As far as the numbering and codification criteria are concerned, refer to doc.
20198.COO.GEN.SDS REV.1.

1.3.3 Symbols for layouts, equipment location, piping installation, typical of installation
1.3.3.1 Sizing criteria
The symbol representation does not normally foresee any scale, as their dimensions shall
be chosen through appropriate parametric procedures on the basis of the complexity of the
plants to represent.
Non-sizing symbols are usually object of single specific layouts and for which it is never
available derived layouts.
Plant components (items) requiring to be represented on scale on the layouts are split in:
• Civil or structural;
• Mechanical;
• Electrical or instrumental.
1.3.3.2 Mechanical layout
Mechanical symbols object of this document are often used in the preparation of all types of
layouts, as the mechanical equipment location is a “basis” for the preparation of documents
of different disciplines.
It is therefore appropriate to always use mechanical symbols under the same shape and
with the same criteria adopted by the mechanical designer; this is valid also for the
execution of electrical or instrumental layouts as well as for any document prepared without
using our procedures.
The mechanical layouts, that first use the symbols included in this document, are of three
typologies:
a) General
The general layout, and the drawings directly taken from this one, shall include the big
mechanical equipment whose symbols are reported in this document. The secondary
equipment, valves and line components are not normally included in the general layout.
The line accessories are not typically object of layouts in subject but some accessories do
have such big dimensions to be appropriate to locate them next to the mechanical
equipment.

Sh. 13 of 252
Normally it is not foreseen the insertion of valves on mechanical layouts, anyway the para.
Indicates the relevant symbols in case it is necessary to represent them in order to highlight
the sizing problems or location solutions in comparison with adjacent equipment or
important process details.
Instrumentation and automation equipment, that may be located on the mechanical layouts,
are solely formed by panels that, due to their significant size, may have an impact on the
mechanical equipment location. The mentioned panels consequently form the typical
subject of “layouts of electrical and instrumental panel location”.
Electrical equipment, that may be located in mechanical layouts, are mainly formed by
panels, which, due to their significant size, may have an impact on the mechanical
equipment location.
The mentioned panels consequently form the typical subject of “layouts of electrical and
instrumental panel location”.
All instrumentation symbols here reported refer to “LOCAL” instruments that, on P&ID, are
indicated with the oval typical symbol (without any diagonal) within which it is written the
function.
Please note that a lot of graphical symbols have marked on the side may typical characters
describing the instrument type.
Graphical symbols have been ordered in progressive. Two groups of symbols have been
singled out; one relevant to symbols to use on representation of escape routes, the other
collects the architectural symbols important for safety reasons and therefore belonging to
the safety symbol library and not to the architectural symbol library.

An instrument developing one or more functions can be identified with all its functions.
A single instrument shall be considered itself equipped with a channel; otherwise it is likely
to give it a progressive number of an instrument interfering with the one of an instrument of
another channel.
For mnemonic reasons, it can be important to have the channel number of a valve equal to
the one of the limit stop of its own rod. This requires a special care during the phase of
channel numbering due to the fact that the valve channel numbering and the limit stop one
always depend on different measured variable and therefore on different possible
interferences with other channel numbers.

This para. shows the codification system of the electrical equipment components and points
out the applicability limit of the IEC rule in designation of material in electro technical used
by ENI.
Publication 750 of IEC recommendations suggests a functional identification tag meant as
an assembly of alphanumerical characters separated in blocs with different meanings
shown in the following design, each preceded by a mark “prefix” designing it and allowing
their combination in the most appropriate manner for design purposes.
Block 1 2 3 4
3A 3B
Main
= + Location - Item Item : Clamp
element
Block 1 (preceded by mark “=”) deals with the identification of any electrical or mechanical
equipment or of a relevant part of the plant. In ENI Normalization Standard, this type of
identification is performed in accordance with the criteria expressed in document
20198.COO.GEN.SDS.
Block 2 (preceded by mark “+”) expresses the physical location of an item in an assembly,
in a building, etc.
Regulation for assignment of a location to an item exists only in ENI for geographical areas
(including buildings and their related rooms) or for location of a column / cell of a
switchboard.
Block 4 (preceded by mark “:”) allows the identification either of the terminal strip either of
the termination itself, pertaining to an equipment or to a component of the same equipment.
Some examples of singling out of terminal board and clamp are included in doc.

The self-explanatory initials normally used by ENI are reported in the following tables and
are shown grouped by homogeneous functions and/or by similar use in the design drawing.
While the self-explanatory initials described in table 3.1 para. 4.3.5.1 are mainly used in plot
plans or in drawings derived from them, the ones of following tables are used for a better
characterization of symbols either of the single line diagrams either of plots plans, of
equipment general arrangements and of the drawings derived from them.

This para. defines the graphical symbols for finishing, fittings and electrical appliances to
use in the assembly drawings.
Finishing include walls, panels, plasterings, false ceilings, pavings, window and door
frames and sanitary fittings.
The document is usable both in the assembly drawings for earth civil works and for
accommodation module on the platforms.
The materials subject of this document are not included in the material subject of the item
code (technical product analysis) and in the materials of the units.
Symbols must be used also in the drawings for material take–off (abachi).
AREE are a possible aggregation criteria.
Symbols of window and door frames are defined in function of the technical features apart
from their sizes.
Pieces of furniture are gathered on the basis of the room assigned; furniture for other
rooms is gathered under the item “general furniture”.
