AS Evaluation

1) In what way does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real
media products?

After researching products that were similar to our own we found that there are a set of forms
and conventions that most thriller films use. Through our research we found that in most
thriller films it is common for there to be female victims, and dislikeable villains that the
audience feel no empathy for. Other conventions in the thriller genre include dim lighting and
claustrophobic locations. One of the films we looked at was Psycho, a murder scene in a very
small bathroom where the use of dim lights and shadows creates the atmosphere and tension.
Our product relates to this, a man desperately trying to escape from a confined and
claustrophobic alley way. Also the use of lighting, the character sees the shadow of the killer but
the audience are kept in suspense because they do no see the killers face. The killer is also
dressed in a dark hood and dark clothing, this portrays her dark personality to the audience.
However, our product also challenges conventions because the killer is a female and the victim
is a male.

2) How does your media product represent particular social groups?

Our media product does not specifically represent any social groups, mainly because the
ethnicity and age of the two characters is not obvious in the opening sequence. However it is
clear to see that the two characters are teenagers. This is shown through the clothing they wear.
One of the characters is wearing an informal set of jeans and t-shirt, the other character is
wearing a hooded jumper. However the stereotype is challenged because it is the female that is
wearing the hood.

3) What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

Because our product is more of a thriller horror and can appeal to a large audience I feel it
would be better distributed by a large distribution company rather than as an art house film. I
believe that our product could be distributed by Columbia pictures because they have previously
distributed thriller and horror movies.

4) Who would be the audience for your media product and why?

We believe our media product appeals to an audience that is 15 and above. It is a product that
both men and women can enjoy. During our planning and research process we thought that the
thriller genre did not appeal to women because the female is stereotypically the victim and a
character that most women cannot empathise with. We believe that this is the reason more
women enjoy romance and comedy genres whereas men are interested in action and thrillers.
The results from the questionnaire proved this. However, our product changes this idea because
the male is the victim in this case. Because of this we believe that our product will appeal to
men as well as women.

5) How did you attract/address your audience?

To attract the audience we used popular conventions from thrillers and horror movies, using
quick pace shot transition and a claustrophobic setting the audience is quickly engaged with the
tension, suspense and atmosphere.

6) What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

Throughout the process of constructing our product I have learnt a lot about the technologies
involved because I had little experience using them before. I have learnt more about the
program Nero and how to use visual effects to enhance the final product.

7) Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from
it to the full product?

I feel I have learnt a lot since the preliminary tasks. I have learnt how to use different camera
angles in order to tell a different story to the audience, I have also learnt how to use different
shots and movements such as the canted angle and point of view shots.
