1.0 Rationale

For safe and uninterrupted traffic flow, it is necessary to have the

maintenance of bridge periodically. This maintenance is essentially
consisting of structural maintenance, rehabilitation & replacement. It
provides the guidelines for the engineers to adopt cost effective
decisions regarding maintenance work for bridges, canals, tunnels
etc. & It can be achieved by the optimal use of public funds. To
achieve the desired result, require constant alertness and through
inspection procedure.

2.0 Aim of the micro-project

a) To study about Maintenance of Bridges.

b) To study about Bridges and their types of bridge with sketches.

3.0 Course Outcomes Addressed

a) Diagnose the condition of bridge.

b) To obtain competencies that will assist in bridge maintenance

activities.

4.0 introduction
It is the Department of Transportation's goal to "maintain bridges to
'as constructed' standards, and maintain the adjacent waterways to
keep them clear of obstructions." To do this, Bridge Repair can be
divided into three categories: Maintenance, Rehabilitation, and
Replacement.

 Inspection identifies maintenance needs

 Inspection determines priorities for repair
 "Maintenance Recommendations" difficult for inexperienced
inspectors
 Good judgement and common sense an asset.

5.0 types of maintenance

 Preventative maintenance
Preventative bridge maintenance avoids larger scale work in stream
environments, and thus makes sense from the standpoint of
stewardship of both natural and financial resources. Preventive
maintenance is defined as a planned strategy of cost-effective
treatments applied at the proper time to preserve and extend the
useful life of a bridge.

Examples: washing bridges - remove gravel from deck sealing

concrete deck and curbs - Asphalt cracks - washing signs Cleaning,
replacing, adding signs

 Routine or minor maintenance

Routine maintenance is the annual maintenance done on the
basis of routine inspection and includes the following:
8

(i) For concrete structures-protection against exposed

reinforcement and repairs to cracks.

(ii) Maintenance of bearings and expansion joints.

(iii) Maintenance of wearing coat.

(iv) Maintenance of Krebs, railing etc.

(v) Maintenance of weep holes & drainage spouts

(vi) Maintenance of protective works.

Examples: patch concrete - patch strip deck repair bridge rail

scour / erosion - replace signs - replace seals - etc.

 Rehabilitation or major maintenance

(I) Restores bridge to original condition or function or upgrades
functionality

(II) High cost do bridge assessment - life cycle cost or cost

benefit

Examples: deck overlays cap / pile replacement culvert liners

cathodic protection - girder replacement etc.
9

6.0 Approach Maintenance

 Guardrail (all bridges)
1) primarily accident damage
2) repair or replace posts, flex beam, or hardware
3) upgrade standard when repairing

 Drainage (all bridges)

1) remove "windrow" under guardrail
2) eliminate ponding
3) drain water off approach, not onto bridge (undermining of trough drains)
4) seal gaps at wing walls

 Superstructure Maintenance
1) Wearing surface
I. remove gravel
II. wash where salt or calcium chloride used
III. concrete spelled / scaled patch concrete • seal
concrete
IV. strip deck rotten / holes • patch / replace strip deck

2) Bridge Rail
I. accident damage
II. repair broken concrete replace post and / or rail -
rotten posts
III. replace - corroded posts / rail
IV. galvanize or replace - when replacing, upgrade to
current standard

8.0 Skill Development /Learning out of these Micro-

project

We understood all about Maintenance of bridges. We clear the

concept about Maintenance of bridges. And some get the knowledge
about in micro project.

9.0 Application of the Micro-Project

In the modern era it is very essential to learn all the concepts and in
a modern era it is area of digital India. Now in this modern here it is
very basic to have teaching skill with the project. Our micro project
can be used by students, teachers, lectures and any person who have
interest to learn may use our project and can learn the maintain the
bridge by very simple way.

10.0 Area of Future Improvement

In engineering terms, the major development has been the increase

in span of cable-stay bridges which are set to replace suspension
bridges up to a span range of 1500m. Beyond 1500m it will invariably
be suspension bridges, and in both types, multi-span bridges will
make large sea-crossings possible.
