1. Introduction

The name waffle comes from the grid pattern that the reinforcing ribs make.
This structure was designed to be more solid with longer spans and heavier loads
when used. A waffle slab is a type of building material which has a two-
directional reinforcement on the outside of the wall, giving it the shape of a
waffle's void. This type gives a substance significantly more structural stability
without using a lot of additional material. The speed of construction for such slab
is faster compared to traditional slab.

2. Research objectives
 Waffle slab dimensions & Illustration example.
 Uses & application of waffle slab.
 construction procedures.
 Implementation & Design of waffle slabs.
 (Advantages , disadvantages)of waffle slab & Services provided in
it.

3. Research

1- Waffle slab Dimensions & Illustration example.

 Slab depth is typically 7.5 cm to 12 cm thick. As a rule of thumb, the
depth should be of the span.
 The width of the ribs is typically 13 cm to 15 cm , and ribs usually have
steel rod reinforcements.
 The distance between ribs is typically 1000 mm .
 The height of the ribs and beams should be of the span between
columns.
 The width of the solid area around the column should be 1⁄8 of the span
between columns. Its height should the same as the ribs.

2 - uses & applications of waffle slab:

Waffle slab can be used as both celling and floor slab. They are used in the areas
where less number of columns are provided,
i.e. it is basically used in the areas which has
huge spans.
Waffle slab is not used in typical construction
projects. They are used for specialist projects
involving clean rooms, spaces requiring
seclusion from low frequency vibrations or
those requiring low floor deflections.
The concrete waffle slab is often used for industrial and commercial buildings
whereas in many otherfconstruction sites wood and metal waffle slabs are used.
This form of construction is used in airports, parking garages, commercial and
industrial buildings, bridges, residences and othervstructures requiring extra
stability.
The main purpose of using this technology is crack and sagging resistance, due
to its strong foundation characteristics.
3- Construction procedures:
The construction of waffle slabs can be done in three ways as follows:
 In-site.
 precast.
 Prefabricated.
In-site waffle slabs are constructed by
pouring concretecin the site or field
with proper arrangements.
In case of precast waffle slab, slab
panels are casteddsomewhere and they
are joined together with proper
reinforcement and concrete is filled.
Prefabricated : The reinforcements
are integrated into the slab while
being manufactured, without needing
to reinforce the assembly on site. This
is the most expensive option.

4- Implementation & Design of waffle slabs

 Placed the formwork

 placed the domes with distance between them

equal b ( b= the width of rib ).

 The reinforcement is placed in both directions,

but the stirrups are closed.

 Place the upper mesh with a thickness of up

to 12 cm, depending on the dimensions of the
domes.

 Then we pour concrete.

 After the concrete dries, removed the
formwork and domes.

Design of waffle slab :

 Basic designs for concrete slabs are available which improve the strength-
to - weight ratio. The top surface is flat for each design, while the
underside is either modulated in a corrugated, ribbed or waffle design.
 Corrugated slabs are created when concrete is poured into a wavy metal
form. This shape prevents the slab from sagging.
 Ribbed slabs add strength in one direction, while the concrete waffle slab
design adds strength in perpendicular directions. Concrete slabs can be
reinforced with rebar for additional strength.
5- (Advantages ,disadvantages) of waffle slab & Services
provided in it:-
advantages:
1. Waffle slabs are used for slabs or floors of larger spans.
2. The load carrying capacity of waffle slab is greater.
3. It has good vibration control capacity.
4. They provide good structural stability along with aesthetic appearance.
It is constructed for airports, hospitals, temples, churches.
5. Waffle slabs are lightweight and requires less amount of concrete it is
economical.
6. Construction of waffle slab is easy and quick with good supervision.
Suez Canal University
Faculty of engineering

Disadvantaged:
1. Building demands strict supervision and skilled labor.
2. The casting shapes or moulds required for prefabricated units are very
expensive and thus economic only when large-scale production of
similar units is desired.
3. This causes issues in the lighting facilities and hanging pipes or ducts
because of the waffle ceiling.
Services provided in waffle slabs :
Due to the holes in the waffle system following services
can be provided:
 Air-conditioning.
 Plumbing.
 Lighting.
 Insulation.
 Materials.
 Wiring, etc

4. Conclusion
Waffle slabs is suitable when the area of land up to ( 15*15). it is provide stiffer
and lighter slabs than an equivalent flat slab. The speed of construction for such
slab is faster compared to conventional slab. Relatively lightweight hence
economical. It uses 30% less concrete and 20% less steel than a raft slab. They
provide low floor deflections. It has good finishes and robustness. Fairly slim
floor depth and fire resistant. Excellent vibration control.
attractive soft appearance when exposed.
