    The Lucerne Festival Academy is a four-week master program that provides opportunities for musicians to work on both modern classics and new scores while receiving coaching from leading performers of contemporary music. Participants will play in the Lucerne Festival Contemporary Orchestra and other ensembles.

    The Lucerne Festival Academy provides opportunities for musicians to work intensively on both established and new contemporary music repertoire, receive coaching from leading performers, premiere new works, and gain experience performing in various ensembles. Former participants also mentor current musicians.

    The 2022 program will feature works by Thomas Adès, Tyshawn Sorey, Per Nørgård, Witold Lutosławski, Igor Stravinsky, Wolfgang Rihm and Dieter Ammann. Composers like Adès and Sorey will be in residence to premiere new works.

    The Lucerne Festival Academy is many things in one: a master
    school for the music of our time, a laboratory for the future,
    and an international network. Over a period of four weeks, you
    will work on a diverse repertoire that ranges from modern
    classics to brand-new scores. Leading performers of contemporary
    music serve as coaches and offer in-depth workshops. The
    Contemporary Leaders, who are former Academy members, will
    also be on hand as mentors during rehearsals to pass on their
    experience. All participants of the Academy play in the Lucerne
    Festival Contemporary Orchestra (LFCO) and additionally join
    together in various ensembles to perform events as part of the
    Festival's related programming.

    In the summer of 2022, you will be joined by composer-in-


    residence Thomas Adès to premiere his new violin concerto for
    Anne-Sophie Mutter. You will meet with Tyshawn Sorey, the
    summer’s “artiste étoile,” and work with him on a directed group
    improvisation. Under Sylvain Cambreling, you will play a double
    birthday concert for Wolfgang Rihm and Dieter Ammann, and
    you will collaborate with the JACK Quartet to give a matinee
    concert based on this year’s Festival theme, “Diversity.” The
    Conducting Fellowship additionally offers young conductors an
    opportunity to follow the Academy’s work and gain important
    practical experience.

    The Fritz Gerber Award, which was given out for the first time in 2015 by the
    Fritz Gerber Foundation, has been established to support three young Swiss
    musicians each year in the area of contemporary classical music.
    This sponsorship, totaling CHF 60’000, consists of both a cash award in the
    value of CHF 10’000 and a scholarship in the form of participation in the Lucerne
    Festival Academy (valued at CHF 10’000) for each of the three recipients.
