(Understanding the Self)
Second Semester, S.Y. 2021-2022
Answer the following questions about your “self” as fully and precisely as you can.
I am the person I have never dreamed of to be. When I was a kid, I always thought of my life to be perfect.
Simple things like getting a new toy, passing my examinations and getting along with my friends were all good to me.
It is like I am contented with whatever I had back then.
When I started growing up, I then realized that there really is no such thing as perfect life or perfect world.
The character that I built when I was still a child would continuously change. I have learned that it is only you that
can control and define your own character, attitude and behavior. Whatever approach or how you would react on
things define your character. Even if you tell the world that you are as long as you do not put it into practice, then
that would not be your true character. True character is by presenting your real self. Describing what you possess
and value. Just be yourself and that would help you find your character. Do not let others influence you, but
influence yourself to become a good and better person. For me and with my experience in life, I have learned that I
am a strong and very much an independent person. I have faced a lot of difficulties in life and yet I still see myself
standing and facing all my fears and problems in a positive way. I also know that I am a simple person. I get to
appreciate every bit of everything. Small things can make me happy and I do not really need expensive things to
make me happy. I am a God-fearing person. I owe everything to Him, my life and my full existence. I have always put
my faith in Him and believe that I can go through with life under His guidance. I am also a good listener. I can say
that I am because I have always been there for my friends and family that are in need of my help. Not just a listener
but helpful as well. I would help everyone the best way I can. I am a generous person. I share my talents, knowledge,
skills and the things that I can share with anyone. No second thoughts, just sharing. There were times that I am being
abused of being generous but it is part of the experience, it never stopped me to be one. I was not born with a silver
spoon in my mouth and that is the reason why I always share whatever I have to anyone who needs my help.
For all the things I have been through, life has taught me somehow a bad character too. That is by not
trusting easily. So, I can say that I do not trust people easily. I am afraid of getting hurt. Not all people possess a good
character. Every human being has its own good and bad character. For me, I always want to see the good in every
people and not judging easily.
2. What makes you stand out from the rest? What makes your “self”
Be confident.
When you truly believe you can create what you envision, when you're not afraid of the obstacles, that
confidence will automatically make you stand out from the rest. What makes me stand out from the rest, is that I
could be a helpful person, I may not be that confident but I do want to try being like others, because everyone's
unique. What makes myself is that I’m just trying to be normal trying to be me. When you truly believe you can
create what you envision, when you're not afraid of the obstacles, that confidence will automatically make you stand
out from the rest. . Practice listening. Learn to listen truly listen--to work toward a deep understanding and hear
what's being said beyond the words.
Gradual… and ongoing. I cannot pinpoint a moment where a radical transformation has
happened. I can see where I was one year, five years, twenty years from now. After starting a
path of self-development, it sneaks upon you. Then looking back you notice that you are a
different person from who you were and say “Omg, when did this happen?” I think if you
embrace the concept of being willing to transform — to be responsible for your choices, to
4. How is your “self” connected to your body?
You are certainly connected to your body through a mind, heart, spirit, emotions, and
other connecting ligaments. These body components are connected with each in order to
function well. Every feeling that you have inside translates and reflects in your actions.

IN SCIENCE
In science, no proof has been shown that the afterlife exists. Thus, after death, it is
assumed that a person simply ceases to exist.
IN RELIGION
Religions have different beliefs on what happens to the soul after death. In
Christianity, the self goes to heaven or hell, depending on how the person lived his/her life. In
Buddhism, they believe in reincarnation wherein a person is reborn again as another person,
animal, or plant. Generally, it is believed that the afterlife exists.
ANALYSIS
Were you able to answer the questions above with ease? Why? Which questions did you find
easiest to answer? Which ones are difficult? Why?
Can one truly know the self? Do you want to know about self?
Few of us achieve it. Psychologist Tasha Eurich divides self-knowledge into two types: internal self-
awareness, or understanding why we behave the way we do, and external awareness, or accurately
judging how others see us. She estimates that 95 percent of people consider themselves self-aware.
In your own words, state what is the meaning of self for each of the following philosophers?
After doing so, explain how your concept of self is compatible with how they conceived of the self.
ACTIVITY 2
Paste a picture of you when you were in elementary, in high school, and now that you are in college.
Below the picture, list downs your salient characteristics that you remember.
My College Self
My Elementary Self
Less Egocentric.
More Independent.
Become Discouraged Easy.
Feel the need to be successful.
More aggression in order to find identity.
Enjoy repetition.
Behavior affected by puberty.
Competitive-upset when losing.
My High School Self
Interested in co-educational activities.
There were many times when I felt that I am not living my true self in certain spaces. It can be certain
groups that you are associated with for quite a time. But honestly, it never really bothered me because, I
never gave it that much priority in my life, even though I used to overthink a little about my behavior.
Being your true authentic self means that what you say in life aligns with what your actions. This means,
you are being your true self through your thoughts, words, and actions. It goes beyond what your job
title is, what possessions you own, or a role you play for someone
4. Following the question above, can you provide a time when you felt when you were not living your

5. What social pressures have shaped your "self'? Would you have wanted it otherwise?
Social Pressure
The following are some of the social pressure that shapes me. Peer pressure - sometimes our
friends pressure us into doing things that might be against our will in order for us to fit in. It affects
us if we are pressured into doing the wrong things which we may regret later on. Culture - our
social culture helps us in a way of understanding ourselves better and the reason behind our every
belief. Performance - this social pressure helps us to perform better and strive for perfection. If we
see other people doing well, it serves as a motivation for us to do better. NO, I would not have it
otherwise as social pressures helped me to become who I am today and to become a better person.
6. What aspects of your "self' do you think may would like to change?
Being Very Introverted. Cut contact. Before you do anything, and I mean anything else, you need to
cut contact with the person.
This activity has two parts that try to compare how we took at ourselves against how people
perceive us depending on how we present ourselves to them. For the first part, list ten to fifteen (10-15)
qualities or things around the human figures representing you that you think defines who you are.
Thinking of others.
For the second part, in the space below, write the following "I am Veluz, Angelo Enot (Your
Name). Who do you think I am based on what you see me do or hear me say?"
Ask your classmates to participate on this activity and let them send you their answers for two to three (2-
3) minutes. You will do the same to your classmates, write briefly and only those that you observe about
the person. Do not use any bad words and do not write your name. After the allotted period, pass all
your answers to the teacher through email. Ask one of your classmates to exchange your work via
messenger.
ANALYSIS
Compare what you wrote about yourself to those written by your classmates. What aspects are
similar and which are not? What aspects are always true to you? What aspects are sometimes true or
circumstantial? What aspects do you think are not really part of your personality?
Write the top five (5) differences between Western and Eastern society, culture, and individuals

ANALYSIS
Do you agree with the differentiation between the West and the East? Where can you find the
Philippines in the distinction? What are the factors that make the Philippines similar or different from its
Asian neighbors? Is there also a difference between regions or ethno linguistic groups in the Philippines?
1. The Philippines and their Asian Neighbors are Religious – Filipinos as well as the other Asians
are known for their strong religious belief. We are capable of living our lives according to the
commandments, standards and scriptures that we learnt from the Bible. There are many different
religions that are manifesting around the world at this present time but even though we belong to
different religious group we are all connecting in one faith that only God can save us from any
disaster that this world will have.
2. The Philippines and their Asian Neighbors are Family-oriented – The common culture of the
Filipino family when you got married, you should also marry the family of your spouse. They are
inseparable, and just like the other Asian family, the children should always honor their parents in
all aspects.
3. The Philippines and their Asian Neighbors are Optimistic – Sweet smiles and loud sound of
happiness are the common reasons why the tourists fell in love to the Philippines and also to other
Asian countries. They face every single challenge with smile and confidents that they can make
through it.
2. Culture and Gesture – These two are also form of communication just like language, it can also
cause misconception and trouble. However, it can also make every person to be creative on how they
can express their selves, and let other know what they want to say.
What Makes Filipino Different to Other Foreign Country. All I know is we are different and
unique as a person and as a Filipino who lives in the Philippines. What makes us different from
other Asian people is that our culture, our tradition, our values, and especially the way our family
raises up. Filipino is different from others in the way they carry themselves they are confident and
glamorous. Filipino have a strong faith when it comes to their beliefs and values. Here in the
Philippines a lot of Filipino women are charming and very loving, that what makes Filipino people
different from others. The traits of Filipino people can easily adapt and have a strong motivation for
what they want and what they do.
They are called ethnic Filipinos. The largest Filipino ethnic groups include the Tagalog, Cebuano,
Ilocano, Bicolano, Kapampangan, Maranao, Maguindanao, and Tausug. About 8% of all Filipinos
of Austronesian descent are tribal peoples. The only difference is the variation of Cebuano language
they both use. From what I noticed, Mindanao Cebuano’s speak Tagalog more and better than
Cebu Cebuano’s. To sum it all up, Philippines is a country with different cultures. ... Every region
or province has a different language.

Communication
More than 100 languages are spoken in addition to Filipino and English; Tagalog, Cebuano,
Ilocano, Bicol, and Hiligaynon. There are also Spanish speaking communities. (Bailey, 2017).
Tone of Voice
No matter the language spoken, Filipino people are often very soft spoken, will stay quiet rather
than appear argumentative (Bailey, 2017). Filipino people are very proud and use silence to demonstrate
pride, They are very polite and agreeable. Pakikisama means "getting along with others at all cost"
(Giger, 2017). Cultural traits such as hiya (shame) and kapwa (togetherness) are very important in the
Filipino community (Javier, Galura, Aliganga, Supan, & Palinkas, 2018).
Body Language
Kissing on the hands, cheeks, or forehead is common, and eye contact is avoided especially when
it comes to the elders. It is meant for a way to show desire and therefore not intended for daily
communication. Touching and showing signs of affection are accepted through the family (Giger, 2017)
Style
Men generally do not show emotions verbally, it could be taken as a sign of weakness. Men do
not like having to answer to women as superiors. The elders are often sought to answer questions
regarding the family, no matter where they reside (Giger, 2017).
Context
Topics that are considered personal like sex, or sex education are not generally discussed; not
even with their children and they often will only disclose necessary information to medical professionals
out of respect. Small talk is often utilized to avoid the sensitive topics. (Giger, 2017)
Nursing Implications
Some patient's might not understand English and if they do, they probably will not understand
medical jargon. An Interpreter may be needed. If used the nurse must be sure the person speaks the same
dialect as the patient. Sensitive subject matter should be handled appropriately, Filipino patients are very
personal and do not like to discuss those matters.
Offer female patients a gown and robe and male patient’s pants due to their modesty. Speak to the
patient individually rather than in a group setting (Giger, 2017).

1. Social relations :
Social ties can instill a sense of responsibility and concern for others that then lead
individuals to engage in behaviors that protect the health of others, as well as their own
health. Social ties provide information and create norms that further influence health
habits.
Our preference for physical attractiveness in forming relationships does not include only
possibilities for romantic partnerships, but research has shown that our preference for
beauty extends to our desire to form friendships and work associations with attractive
people over unattractive ones. When we have social relationships, we feel connected to
others in ways that we can't experience when we are alone, or when we have only superficial
relationships. In terms of emotional rewards, our relationships give us emotional support
and encouragement in difficult times. They also give us happiness. As humans, social
interaction is essential to every aspect of our health. Research shows that having a strong
network of support or strong community bonds fosters both emotional and physical health
and is an important component of adult life.
2. Self-esteem :
Self-esteem impacts your decision-making process, your relationships, your
emotional health, and your overall well-being. It also influences motivation, as people with a
healthy, positive view of themselves understand their potential and may feel inspired to take
on new challenges. It is helpful to remember that beauty is both a physical and
psychological experience. It is based on three qualities: 1) How we actually look (genetics) 2)
How we take care of ourselves (health and grooming) 3) How we feel about how we look
(positive self-regard) Self-confidence enables students to handle setbacks with ease. Instead
of being crippled by failure, resilient children get up quickly, learn from their mistakes, and
try again. They accept that failure is a part of life and take more chances as a result - which
makes them even more successful later in life. According to the American Psychological
Association, having high self-esteem is key to positive mental health and well-being. High
self-esteem matters because it helps you develop coping skills, handle adversity, and put the
negative into perspective.
3. Job opportunities :
Opportunities in the workplace give employees a sense of getting better at
something and always expanding into new areas. It is a universal human need. We become
bored, distracted, and disengaged when we feel that our work is routine and repetitive.
According to many studies, good looks and success go hand in hand. Attractive people tend
to get ahead faster and earn more money - which in turn makes them more appearance-
conscious. Berlin's celebrity hairdresser Udo Walz has a clear opinion: beauty definitely
provides an extra boost in the job world

Activity 10.
1. Which among two eastern thoughts discussed do you find relatable? Explain your answer.
The first and central ‘noble truth’ of the Buddha is that life is unavoidably about suffering.
The Buddha continually seeks to adjust our expectations so we will know what to expect: sex
will disappoint us, youth will disappear, and money won’t spare us pain. For the Buddha, the
wise person should take care to grow completely at home with the ordinary shambles of
existence. They should understand that they are living on a dunghill.
2. Based on your observation and experiences, give three manifestations of individualistic culture
among Filipinos. Explain each
The first example of highly individualistic Filipino cultural figures might be Lapu Lapu: Lapulapu
or Lapu-Lapu (fl. 1521), whose name was first recorded as Çilapulapu or Cilapulapu, was a datu of
Mactan in the Visayas. Modern Philippine society regards him as the first Filipino hero because he
was the first native to resist imperial Spanish colonization. Lapu Lapu has become a folk hero because
he was the singular leadership example of the Filipinos in Mactan. Jake Zyrus (formerly Charice
Pempengco) is a female-to-male singing star, following gender reassignment surgery. Given the
paucity of such people in the world, he may be regarded as a unique example of extreme individualism
in his career field. Jose Rizal is the immediate and overwhelmingly favorite example of individualism.
He is well known in the country as the intellectual and spiritual father of the modern Philippines. He
is also a martyr for his efforts — which tends to discourage copycats.
3. Based on your observation and experiences, give three manifestations of the collectivistic culture
of Filipinos. Explain each.
Filipinos value traditions and culture are one of the manifestation of the collectivistic
culture in the Philippines. For Filipinos, traditions in their home and in their family are
important. They usually set aside a specific day for a certain celebration like festivals, birthday
parties, reunions, etc. And of course, every gathering is dedicated to keeping up with each
other over sumptuous food.
Second is: Filipinos are very religious. In all corners of a Filipino house, you can find
brazen images of crosses and other religious paraphernalia. They go to church every Sunday,
or sometimes even twice or three times a week.
Third is: Filipinos help one another. More popularly known as bayanihan, Filipinos help
one another—without expecting anything in return—so that undertaking their tasks and
responsibilities become much easier. Sometimes this is called “community spirit.”

person? List down the physical and attitudinal or behavioral traits that you find appealing.
Dancer Educated
2. How important are these traits in selecting a partner or in entering into a relationship? Explain
your answer.
It is very important. The one primary trait you must absolutely consider is how considerate the person
is of others before you get into a relationship with them. And if — to bring in some politics, — you think
Trump is not an Obama is, then you will get hurt. Considerate doesn’t mean how slick he his while the
attention is on him, but what he does when they feel not scrutinized. A very nice test you can run is
observe how they treat a janitor or a waitress. If you are a woman, you might feel great if your man is
bossing around everyone else and treats you like a princess, but when people who do not have empathy
gain the upper hand on you, they stop treating you like a princess — or like a king, if we are talking about
you, man, looking for female traits. You cannot be happy with a narcissist or borderline personality
disordered partner, no way. And you do well if you understand something about these personality traits so
you can discern them even in traits that are below the full psycho-pathology diagnosis level.
The second most important trait is that you like her/him physically, not just on optical appearance
pleasant to you, but also the smell and the touch. Pay attention to that, especially the smell. For women,
sometimes they are impressed by the social status and demeanor of a man, maybe he is an alpha type, or
maybe he is a softer type and you find that is more secure for you. But you must really like him, for his
most basic physical/chemical character. And, very important for men to realize; you must be sure she
likes you in that way. Often men think they get lucky if a gorgeous lady will “give him a chance.” But
that is futile if she does not really like you, she will not be able to continue that sham. Also as a man, this
means, pay attention to where you are convenient for her. You must be desired when you are not
convenient
When people start new relationships, everyone is on their best behavior. Observe what they do when
caught off guard, when under stress, when your needs are inconvenient to them.
3. Do you favor the inclusion of sex education in the high school curriculum? Explain your answer.
Yes, because such education helps young people to reduce their risk of potentially negative outcomes,
such as unwanted pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Such education can also help
youth to enhance the quality of their relationships and to develop decision-making skills that will prove
invaluable over life.
Activity 13.
Answer the questions below.
Scripture Reading: Rom. 1:19-20; Psa. 19:1; Acts 14:15-17; 17:24-28a; Job 26:7; Isa. 40:22; Gen.
1:27; 2:7a; Rom. 9:21-24a; Zech. 12:1. The mystery of the universe is God: “Because that which is
known of God is manifest within them, for God manifested it to them. For the invisible things of Him,
both His eternal power and divine characteristics, have been clearly seen since the creation of the world,
being perceived by the things made, so that they would be without excuse”—Rom. 1:19-20. “The heavens
declare the glory of God, / and the expanse proclaims the work of His hands”—Psa. 19:1. “The living
God, who made heaven and earth and the sea and all things in them; who in the generations gone by
allowed all the nations to go their ways. And yet He did not leave Himself without witness, in that He did
well by giving you rain from heaven and fruitful seasons, filling your hearts with food and gladness”—
Acts 14:15-17. “The God who made the world and all things in it...gives to all life and breath and all
things. And He made from one every nation of men to dwell on all the face of the earth, determining
beforehand their appointed seasons and the boundaries of their dwelling, that they might seek God, if
perhaps they might grope for Him and find Him, even though He is not far from each one of us; for in
Him we live and move and are”—17:24-28a. “He stretches out the north over the void; / He hangs the
earth upon nothing”—Job 26:7. “It is He who sits above the circle of the earth. Who stretches out the
heavens like a curtain, / and spreads them out like a tent to dwell in”—Isa. 40:22. The above verses prove
that: God exists. God is the origin of the universe, for the heavens, the earth, and all things therein were
created by Him. God is the source of mankind, for mankind was created by Him. Human beings live,
move, and exist in God. God causes the heavens to give forth rain and the earth to yield produce for
man’s existence. The times and boundaries of all nations were determined beforehand by God. God
created man according to His image that man might be a vessel to contain Him: “And God created man in
His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them”—Gen. 1:27.
“Jehovah God formed man from the dust of the ground”—2:7a. “Or does not the potter have authority
over the clay to make out of the same lump one vessel unto honor and another unto
dishonor?...God...might make known the riches of His glory upon vessels of mercy, which He had before
prepared unto glory, even us, whom He has also called”—Rom. 9:21-24a. “Jehovah, who stretches forth
the heavens and lays the foundations of the earth and forms the spirit of man within him”—Zech. 12:1.
The above verses reveal that: Man was created according to God’s image; God’s image is expressed in
His four attributes, or characteristics: love, light, holiness, and righteousness. Man is a container created
by God according to what He is; God wants to be man’s content, and He wants man to be His expression.
Man’s virtues as the outward form of God’s attributes must have God in them as the reality for them to
develop and shine forth. Man’s spirit is as important as the heavens and the earth; the heavens are for the
earth, the earth is for man, and man is for God; God is Spirit, so God created man especially with a spirit
as the organ to receive God.
Romans 1:19 and 20 say, “Because that which is known of God is manifest within them, for God
manifested it to them. For the invisible things of Him, both His eternal power and divine characteristics,
have been clearly seen since the creation of the world, being perceived by the things made, so that they
would be without excuse.” This passage presents a profound matter and speaks forth the mysteries of the
universe. In our eyes heaven, earth, and man all are mysteries. When we look at heaven, earth, and
ourselves, we cannot explain them. After all, what is heaven, what is earth, and what are we human
beings? Many astronomers and geologists, and some anthropologists as well, have spent much time on
these questions yet have not been able to find the answers.
THE CREATION OF MAN. Man’s life is the highest created life, much higher in quality than the
plant life or animal life. Not only so, man was created after God’s kind. The animals in God’s creation
were created after their own kind. Thus, the animal life cannot contain or express the human life.
However, man was made after God’s kind, with the ability and capacity to receive another life—the
divine life. In this respect man is unique in all God’s creation. Not only so, man is a vessel, a container
(Rom. 9:21, 23). Because we are vessels of God, God wants to be our content. Just as bottles are made to
contain milk and beverages, we are made to contain God. This is the reason that knowledge, wealth,
material possessions, and accomplishments can never satisfy us, because we were created to contain God.
All human beings, regardless of their race or nationality, are vessels of God. The Bible, the word of God,
divides this vessel into three parts—the spirit, the soul, and the body (1 Thes. 5:23). Everyone is aware of
his own physical body. It is tangible, concrete, temporal, and lends itself to scientific investigation. If we
were to ask a chemistry professor, “What are the physical properties that constitute man’s physical
makeup?” he might produce an analysis chart and point out that human beings are composed of so many
percent water, nitrogen, carbon, and various other elements. As a professor of chemistry, he would be
correct, no doubt, according to his field of research. However, his research would be limited to the
physical part of man’s being, the part that is made up of the elements of the earth. Since the beginning of
history man has sought to be free from the imprisonment of his body. He has tried to find new ways of
pleasing his overworked senses, only to find that it all has been done before. Although man has managed
to prolong biological life, every man comes to the point where he has to admit that the body is a dead end.
God’s purpose for man does not focus on man’s physical body. After examining man according to his
view, a psychologist might say that besides man’s body, man has an inward, hidden composition. Man
has a mind, a thinking organ. He also has emotions, the faculty of inner feeling, capable of loving, hating,
and being depressed and elated. He might also point out that man has a will, a faculty for making
decisions. In short, man is a living, thinking, feeling, and deciding entity—not mere animated dust but a
real, living person, having a unique and distinctive personality. He would say that our inner self, our
psychological self, is our real self, while our body is merely the outward shell of our being. Psyche, the
root of such English words as psychiatry and psychology, comes from the Greek word meaning “soul.”
Psychology is the study of the soul. The three faculties of mind, will, and emotion compose the
personality and are merely the components of the human soul. The last two centuries of human history
have seen the spectacular rise of the soul’s powers. The great minds such as Churchill, Einstein, Emerson,
and Dostoevsky have contributed an abundance of thought. The great wills have produced an abundance
of decisive action in government and culture. Without a doubt the soul has soared to its peak in the past
few decades. Yet in spite of man’s great accomplishments, the sense of inner emptiness remains. We can
conquer the moon, but within ourselves there remains some uncharted territory. We can study the world’s
great philosophies and still not find the answer to the great questions concerning our human existence.
We can obtain the highest education and yet remain restless and dissatisfied. Within the soul of man, the
search for the meaning of human life will always end in frustration. Hidden and obscured, there is a
faculty deep within man that has remained a mystery throughout all the ages. It is deeper than the soul.
Just as the life-giving marrow is hidden within the bone, hidden within the soul is the human spirit. The
spirit of man was made specifically to contain God Himself, to be filled with God. Man is never satisfied
because this deepest part still remains to be filled. Through the mind man is able only to consider God
and know God objectively, but through the spirit man is able to contact God, contain God, and enjoy God.
There are a few verses here that can be considered as the sweetest and richest in life in the whole of the
Scripture. The first portion is Ephesians 2:12: “You were at that time apart from Christ, having no hope
and without God in the world.” This tells us that as those who live in the world, there is no hope if we are
apart from Christ, because we do not have God. God created the universe with a purpose, and for this
purpose He created man. God created man differently than He did all other things. First, He created man
according to His own image. As He Himself is love, light, holiness, and righteousness, so He put these
virtues into man. Therefore, when a person is born, inherently he has love, light, holiness, and
righteousness. From the depths of our being, we all hope to be persons of love, light, holiness, and
righteousness. Yet all these are only the outward form. Consider the example of a glove: it has just the
outward form of the hand. Only when a hand is inserted can there be the reality of the glove. Since God
wants to enter into us to be our life and reality, God has created a spirit for man within. This has been
especially created by God for each one. This spirit within man is like the receiver of a radio and is able to
receive the “sound waves” from the heavens. Yes, we all have God’s image, but that is only outward.
Now within us there is an organ that can receive God. That organ is our spirit. Therefore, if we do not
open our heart to let this God come in, as far as we ourselves are concerned, we are only an empty shell,
an empty vessel. We need to receive God into our spirit to be our content. HUMAN LIFE WITHOUT
CHRIST BEING UTTERLY HOPELESS. Throughout human history there have been tens of thousands
of books, yet it is a marvelous thing that from the past to the present only one book is called the Holy
Bible, the Holy Book. This book is indeed holy, for it is God’s speaking and God’s breathing out (2 Tim.
3:16). This book tells us from the very start that “in the beginning God created the heavens and the earth”
(Gen. 1:1). We do not need to speculate, for it clearly tells us that God created the heavens and the earth.
Even modern science has proved that God indeed used the dust of the earth to create man, because the
elements found in man are compatible with those found in the dust of the earth. God first created our
body, and then He created a spirit for us that we may contain Him. However, the spirit of man lost its
function due to man’s fall, so God came to be a man and died for us on the cross as our Savior. When He
resurrected from the dead, He became the ever-living Spirit, not only forgiving our sins but also entering
into us to be our life. What a sweet salvation! What a wonderful fact! The Lord who created the universe,
the God of all, is actually willing to enter into us, who were created yet fallen people, to be our life. This
is indeed a great matter in the universe. For this reason, the Bible tells us that if we live apart from this
Christ, our human life is without hope. Why is it without hope? It is because we are without God. The
Christ in whom we believe is God Himself. He was God who came to be among men, and He was God
manifesting Himself to man, that is, God reaching man. This God who has reached us is our Savior. Once
we receive Him, He and we have a spiritual union in life. He enters into us, and we enter into Him.
Therefore, if our human life is without Christ and God, we are truly without a goal. The hope previously
mentioned refers to this goal. When we are endeavoring for our career, living a very busy life, we may
not feel as much the pain of having no hope. However, when we have achieved success and have acquired
fame and when we have obtained all that we desire to have, we will sense a great lack and a great
dissatisfaction in the depths of our being. We cannot say for sure where the shortage is, but we do
experience it. Particularly before graduation from college we readily feel the vanity and emptiness of
human life. What will our future be? What is the direction of our human life? This tells us that without
God and Christ, our human life has no goal. A human life without a goal is the greatest reason for our
feeling of vanity. If a person does not have God in his spirit, no matter how prosperous his career is, how
numerous his achievements are, or how high his position is, he will still have a great sense of emptiness
and dissatisfaction.
Once when the Lord Jesus was on the earth, on the last day of a feast, He stood up among a crowd
and cried out, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink” (John 7:37). Why did He wait until the
last day of the feast to stand up and speak this word? This is because it was on the last day of the feast,
after the people had rejoiced a few days and were about to go away, that the sense of emptiness came. At
that juncture, Jesus stood up and cried, “He who believes into Me, out of his innermost being shall flow
rivers of living water” (v. 38). The living water and the innermost being mentioned here are both figures
of speech, pointing to the fact that this Savior as the Spirit of life wants to enter into us as living water to
quench the thirst of us who thirst. Not only so, but today our Lord is also “breath.” After His death and
resurrection, He returned to be among the disciples, breathed into them, and said to them, “Receive the
Holy Spirit” (20:22). The Greek word for spirit is the same as that for breath. Therefore, here this can be
translated as, “Receive the Holy Breath.” Our Lord, our God, is to us like air. Today all things exist
altogether by depending on this breath of life. If there were no air, all living things could not live. Air is
only a sign, whereas the Lord Jesus is the reality. He is the real air. The Lord wants to come into us. As
the real life, He comes into us to solve the problem of our inward vanity. Our human life has hope only
when we are filled with Christ within. The Lord Jesus is not only our water of life to quench our thirst. He
is not only the real breath of life coming into us to take away our emptiness. He is also our bread of life so
that we who eat Him shall by no means ever hunger. When the Lord Jesus was on earth, He said to
people, “I am the bread of life; he who comes to Me shall by no means hunger, and he who believes into
Me shall by no means ever thirst” (6:35). In human history no writer of any book has ever dared to speak
in such a way. Who could speak such words as, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink”; “he
who believes into Me,...out of his innermost being shall flow rivers of living water”; and “I am the bread
of life; he who comes to Me shall by no means hunger, and he who believes into Me shall by no means
ever thirst”? Only the God who created the universe can speak such words.
Most Filipinos are Roman Catholics and their religious beliefs have significant influence on their ideas
about identity, essence, and purpose for existence. Explain your essence and purpose for existence as
exemplified by the song below. Otherwise, identify a different song which reflects your essence and
purpose for existence.
The Meaning of Human Life (My Existence )
Man’s life is a mystery. Scholars, historians, and philosophers through the centuries have sought
to understand man and the meaning of human existence. Despite man’s endeavors to probe into the
secrets of the universe, the universe remains a mystery. Although many consider the universe and
man’s purpose on this earth to be an insoluble riddle, the Bible, one of God’s greatest gifts to mankind,
unlocks this mystery. The Bible is God’s revelation to man. It reveals the reality concerning God, the
universe, man, the relationship between man and God, the relationships among men, and man’s
obligation to God, as seen through creation and the Scripture. THE PURPOSE OF MAN. God’s Word
tells us that He is self-existing and ever-existing. In eternity past God was there. At a certain point He
made a decision to create man. God’s desire was to have this man express Him in His image and
represent Him with His authority on earth (Gen. 1:26-28). This is quite meaningful. Before God created
man, He made billions of items in this universe. He created the plant life, the animal life, and finally
the highest life, the human life. We can easily see that the plants were created for the animals, and the
animals were created for mankind. However, it is not easy to realize that man was made for God’s
purpose. The Bible tells us in the very first pages of Genesis that God’s creation of man was different
from His creation of all other things. He created man in His own image. Let us illustrate this matter by
using a glove. In the regions of the world where there are long, harsh winters and extreme cold, most
people are accustomed to wearing warm gloves. A person’s hand cannot fit into a handkerchief because
it does not have the image or form of the hand. Because the glove is in the image, the likeness, and the
form of a hand, it is able to contain the hand. A glove is made in the form of a hand for the purpose of
containing the hand. In the same way, the human life was created according to the image of God so that
God could dispense Himself as the divine life into the human life.
Man was created not only to express God but also to be God’s representative authority. God
wanted man to rule over this created earth with His dominion. Although God judged and sentenced His
enemy, Satan, the created man was committed with the responsibility to execute this judgment. Man
was to rule over a vast territory for God. The unique way for man to express God and represent God is
to receive God as his life that man may become a counterpart of God. Man was created with the
capacity to receive and contain God’s divine life. All of man’s human virtues, such as love, honor, and
goodness, were created by God so that man may have God’s life and live out the divine attributes. THE
CREATION OF MAN. Man’s life is the highest created life, much higher in quality than the plant life
or animal life. Not only so, man was created after God’s kind. The animals in God’s creation were
created after their own kind. Thus, the animal life cannot contain or express the human life. However,
man was made after God’s kind, with the ability and capacity to receive another life—the divine life. In
this respect man is unique in all God’s creation. Not only so, man is a vessel, a container (Rom. 9:21,
23). Because we are vessels of God, God wants to be our content. Just as bottles are made to contain
milk and beverages, we are made to contain God. This is the reason that knowledge, wealth, material
possessions, and accomplishments can never satisfy us, because we were created to contain God. All
human beings, regardless of their race or nationality, are vessels of God. The Bible, the word of God,
divides this vessel into three parts—the spirit, the soul, and the body (1 Thes. 5:23). Everyone is aware
of his own physical body. It is tangible, concrete, temporal, and lends itself to scientific investigation.
If we were to ask a chemistry professor, “What are the physical properties that constitute man’s
physical makeup?” he might produce an analysis chart and point out that human beings are composed
of so many percent water, nitrogen, carbon, and various other elements. As a professor of chemistry, he
would be correct, no doubt, according to his field of research. However, his research would be limited
to the physical part of man’s being, the part that is made up of the elements of the earth. Since the

man has managed to prolong biological life, every man comes to the point where he has to admit that
the body is a dead end. God’s purpose for man does not focus on man’s physical body. After
examining man according to his view, a psychologist might say that besides man’s body, man has an

He would say that our inner self, our psychological self, is our real self, while our body is merely the
outward shell of our being. Psyche, the root of such English words as psychiatry and psychology,
comes from the Greek word meaning “soul.” Psychology is the study of the soul. The three faculties of
mind, will, and emotion compose the personality and are merely the components of the human soul.
The last two centuries of human history have seen the spectacular rise of the soul’s powers. The great

Hidden and obscured, there is a faculty deep within man that has remained a mystery throughout

3. What is the meaning of the song? How the song does relate to your life? Explain your answer.
This song was based on a movie which was released back in 1975, called Mahogany. Diana Ross
starred in it, and she sang the song by the same name. It really means me a lot. It was about a woman who
was a successful singer, and whose life is later marred by tragedy. Diana Ross had high dreams and
aspirations about being the superstar singer. But, instead she got a little success and then turned to drugs
and alcohol. Her boyfriend got jilted by her, because of her exalting aspirations to become famous. And
she ended up living alone. I think she died from a drug overdose or something at the end of the movie. It
did have a very sad ending. But the title of the song could mean many things to different people. The line
"Do You Where You're Going To?" Do You Get What You're Hoping For?" Is like looking back on a
past time in your life when your life was less complicated and your dreams seemed so close. However, as
time rolls on, you realize that the dreams you had just went by and they become out of reach, for
whatever reasons, life happens. Regret is the most prevalent theme discussed in the song and what took
place in the movie. It was a pretty good movie.

Activity 15
Watch any movie about sorcery and/or witchcraft. Based on the chosen movie, answer the
questions below.
1. Where and when is the setting of the story? Who are the characters? Based on these elements,
from which culture does the film base its conception of sorcery of witchcraft?
Harry Potter's story is set in a magical, largely fictional Britain, but the film series used many real
locations as evocative backdrops. Other settings, like Diagon Alley, exist only at Leavesden Film Studios
(20 miles north of London). Ten-year-old Harry Potter is an orphan who lives in the fictional London
suburb of Little Whinging, Surrey, with the Dursleys: his uncaring Aunt Petunia, loathsome Uncle
Vernon, and spoiled cousin Dudley. The Dursleys barely tolerate Harry, and Dudley bullies him. The
British magical community of the Harry Potter books is inspired by 1990s British culture, European
folklore, classical mythology and alchemy, incorporating objects and wildlife such as magic wands,
magic plants, potions, spells, flying broomsticks, centaurs and other magical creatures, and the
Philosopher's Stone, beside others invented by Rowling. While the fantasy land of Narnia is an alternate
universe and the Lord of the Rings' Middle-earth a mythic past, the wizarding world of Harry Potter exists
parallel to the real world and contains magical versions of the ordinary elements of everyday life, with the
action mostly set in Scotland (Hogwarts), the West Country, Devon, London, and Surrey in southeast
England.[14] The world only accessible to wizards and magical beings comprises a fragmented collection
of overlooked hidden streets, ancient pubs, lonely country manors, and secluded castles invisible to the
Muggle population.
2. How do the elements of the film achieve a seemingly realistic depiction of sorcery or witchcraft?
Magic is one of the major themes in Harry Potter and the philosopher's stone. In this novel, Rowling
presents the reader with two worlds, the magic world as different from ours that is called (in the books)
the Muggle world. However, one can see traces of similarities between the two worlds. Is there sorcery in
Harry Potter? Wizards only use Wands (Spell focuses), incantations, and ritual circles as aids to their
sorcery. Magic can be performed wandless, and by the sixth year, students are expected to cast spells
without speaking.
My view is that “the self” is really not a proper subject for objective knowledge, at this
point in history. We have only reached a point where we have pseudo-knowledge, which is above
all instrumental knowledge. Consequently, all claims to objectively know “the self” these days
only do violence to what is real about the self.
To put it differently, the knowledge that we have today about people and individual
identities has everything to do with industrial and manufacturing processes, and very little to do
with people. Consider how the latest theorizing of “personality disorders” is expressed. There is
always a sense that the human is manufactured goods that somehow fell off the factory conveyer
belt at some point, when things have gone wrong. Reflexively, we look back to the series of events
we may have experienced to determine which of these were less than perfect. And upon
pinpointing that event, we presume ourselves to have developed a manufacturing fault.
Whereupon we head off to the person offering therapy to pick us up from the factory floor and
replace the broken gadget inside of us to make us run smoothly again. Furthermore, if we are
unable to get our internalized part fully replaced, we seek out other means to rectify ourselves,
by marketing our fault as somehow positive or endearing, and thus we appeal to others not to
discard us as factory rejects. But what escapes our minds and our knowledge, in the whole of this
is that the real self is nothing like an entity that gets produced by various systematic processes.
(Or put differently, we, with our minds, are not in any position, remotely, to understand the
systematic processes that create us, or to pinpoint any stage where things have gone awry with
them: this way of thinking is all just a contemporary or modern myth.) I do think, by contrast,
that understanding the self in a way that does not do violence to the self, can be achieved through
meditation and reflection, as well as being close to nature. This is because I think the true self is a
natural and organic self that has its meaning and purpose in harmonizing with nature. When we
speak of “the self” in other terms, we are merely engaging in a shallow “quality control” form of
behavior. We take on the symbolic role of factory foremen. But this is quite wrong.
Understanding yourself is the advantage. It is the endgame. When you “get there” you are
There. Everything else is gravy. When you understand yourself you treat yourself with kindness
and compassion. You understand the courage it has taken you to get this far in life. When you
understand yourself you realize you are extending to yourself that which you already are. You
understand that you are the kindness and compassion you wish for yourself and others. There is
nothing to attain to. You are already it. You are already whole. That's an advantage I can live
with.
Thank you!
God bless you always!
