At the end of this lesson, you will be able to:
a) identify the kinds of adjectives;
b) arrange adjectives in their proper order;
c) compose clear and coherent sentences using appropriate grammatical
structures – kinds and order of adjective;
d) explain differences among the types of text through examples; and
e) distinguish text types according to purpose and features – classification,
explanation, enumeration, and time order.

Greetings! Many exciting lessons await you for the third quarter. In this module,
we will be focusing on adjectives and different types of text.
Furthermore, we will learn about the different text types. Text types are forms of
writing according to the purpose they serve. Your knowledge about the different types
of texts will help you organize your thoughts when you read, retell, or report on a
particular reading. Let start!

ADJECTIVES
Adjectives are also known as describing words. They describe and modify nouns
and pronouns. There are two kinds of adjectives – descriptive and limiting.

Descriptive adjectives are divided into two kinds – common adjectives and
proper adjectives.
Common Adjectives – They are used to Proper Adjectives – They are proper

1. ARTICLES (a, an, the)- a and an are indefinite articles that are used for non-specific
subject, while the is used to refer or indicate a specific thing.

• The owner of the agency talked to the press.

• These files contain information about our report. (demonstrative)
• Whose project is this? (interrogative)
• His uncle is my class adviser. (possessive)
3. NUMERALS – They are used to show the number or order of the noun being
described.
Examples:

Order of Adjectives
The order of adjectives is observed when two or more adjectives are used to
describe a noun. In using two or more nouns, you have to follow an order.

• opinion – tells what one thinks about a certain noun described
• size – tells how big or small the noun/pronoun being described
• age – tells how old or young a person or an object being described
• shape, weight, length – refers to the shape of an object or even the
weight or length of the noun described
• color – tells the color of the object described
• origin – tells where the object described came from.
Proper adjectives fall under this category
• material – tells what an object described is made of
Not all adjectives can be written all at the same time, which is why you have to
follow a certain order.

A. Classification - One of the purposes of text types is to classify or describe. Read and
analyze the table below.
B. Explanation – A factual text type that aims to state how and why things happen. An
example of this is a flowchart.

Example:
There are a number of good reasons for immigrating to Finland. First, everyone
speaks English. Second, Finland has a superior, free health system and all education is
free. In addition, most public transport is free. A third reason is that Finns are friendly,
outgoing people. Finally, where else except in Finland can you swim outside during the
winter.

D. Time Order (sequence, recounts, process) – It tells the process of how something was
done according to time order.
Example:
Before applying the screen protector, clean the surface of your phone’s screen
with a soft cloth. Once the surface of your screen is clean, remove the paper backing
on the screen protector. Evenly apply the sticky side of the screen protector to your
phone’s screen. Smooth out any air bubble trapped on between the protector and the
phone screen. Enjoy the added protection.

Your understanding of using the correct kind of adjective will allow you to be
more accurate in expressing your ideas. Adjectives can add color and life to a
sentence. They are useful tools for speaking well. With the help of adjectives, you can
tell similarities and differences between ideas.
Applying your learning about adjectives and the different text types, write a
paragraph that will describe your dream vacation when the pandemic is over.
Challenge Yourself
A factual recount retells something that happened in the past. It may start with
people, the date or time, and the place followed by the description of the events as
they happen in time order.
Using adjectives, write a paragraph (factual recount) of the happiest day of your
life.
