b) arrange adjectives in their proper order;
c) compose clear and coherent sentences using appropriate grammatical
structures – kinds and order of adjective;
d) explain differences among the types of text through examples; and

Start Up
Greetings! Many exciting lessons await you for the third quarter. In this module,
we will be focusing on adjectives and different types of text.

Adjectives make sentences more specific by providing specific details and

descriptions. It has two types - descriptive and limiting. Moreover, in this lesson, we will
learn that one noun can be described using several adjectives. With that, we should
know that the correct order of the describing words should be taken into consideration.
When we use adjectives in sentences and our speech, it helps us to be creative. So, it is
a must that we know the proper usage of adjectives.

Furthermore, we will learn about the different text types. Text types are forms of
writing according to the purpose they serve. Your knowledge about the different types
of texts will help you organize your thoughts when you read, retell, or report on a
particular reading. Let start!

What are the words did you write to describe the city of Cebu? Those words you
used for describing are what we call adjectives.

ADJECTIVES
Adjectives are also known as describing words. They describe and modify nouns
and pronouns. There are two kinds of adjectives – descriptive and limiting.

described.

To learn more about the kinds of adjectives, read pp. 205-208, IE for EC 5
and 104-105, English Encounters: Language 5.

Order of Adjectives
The order of adjectives is observed when two or more adjectives are used to
describe a noun. In using two or more nouns, you have to follow an order.

Physical Description
Article/ Shape, Noun
Determiner Opinion/ Size Age Weight, Color Origin Material
Quality Length
big new red European racing car
the passionate young Cebuano senator

1. Article or Determiner
2. Physical Description
• opinion – tells what one thinks about a certain noun described
• size – tells how big or small the noun/pronoun being described
• age – tells how old or young a person or an object being described

weight or length of the noun described
• color – tells the color of the object described
• origin – tells where the object described came from.
Proper adjectives fall under this category
• material – tells what an object described is made of

Not all adjectives can be written all at the same time, which is why you have to
follow a certain order.

To learn more about the order of adjectives, read pp. 224-225, IE for EC 5
and 112-113, English Encounters: Language 5.

TEXT TYPES – PURPOSE AND FEATURES
Text types are any pieces of writing that you read or create. They are written
for a variety of purposes and features. These writings use different forms and standards
of composition. They are divided into two: factual text and literary text.

A. Classification - One of the purposes of text types is to classify or describe. Read and
analyze the table below.

C. Enumeration – A text type that list a set of element or ideas, itemized objects or series
of some kind.

Example:

There are a number of good reasons for immigrating to Finland. First, everyone
speaks English. Second, Finland has a superior, free health system and all education is
free. In addition, most public transport is free. A third reason is that Finns are friendly,
outgoing people. Finally, where else except in Finland can you swim outside during the
winter.

D. Time Order (sequence, recounts, process) – It tells the process of how something was
done according to time order.
Example:

Before applying the screen protector, clean the surface of your phone’s screen
with a soft cloth. Once the surface of your screen is clean, remove the paper backing
on the screen protector. Evenly apply the sticky side of the screen protector to your
phone’s screen. Smooth out any air bubble trapped on between the protector and the
phone screen. Enjoy the added protection.
