2. Comparison of the 20th Century Music to Other Art Forms

Expectation

Upon completion of this module, learners are expected to distinguish the

differences of impressionism and expressionism in the 20th century music. They will
also be able to identify the distinct musical style used in the 20th century music
and identify the importance of 20th century music that is widely used even in other
industries (ex. movies). Learners will be able to explore other arts media that
portrays 20th century elements through video films, video clips, MTV using camera
or mobile phones and demonstrate the “Whole-Tone Scale” and “Pentatonic
Scale” by singing melodic fragment of given Impressionism period piece.

Brief Introduction

The 20th century was clearly a period of widespread experimentation and

many composers wanted the freedom to explore new compositional
approaches without the restrictions and expectations that accompany
traditional genres. Even when longstanding genres were used, composers felt
very comfortable abandoning the traditional structures of those genres.

1
Music in the 20th Century changed dramatically, due to the hostile political
climate, advances in technology, and huge shifts in style. Many composers,
struggling to build any further on the music of generations gone by, reacted
against established musical trends, creating exciting new forms and styles.
Musical Impressionism is the name given to a movement in European
classical music that arose in the late 19th century and continued into the middle
of the 20th century. Originating in France, musical Impressionism is characterized
by suggestion and atmosphere, and eschews the emotional excesses of the
Romantic era. Impressionist composers favoured short forms such as the nocturne,
arabesque, and prelude, and often explored uncommon scales such as the
whole tone scale.
Impressionism, in music, a style initiated by French composer Claude
Debussy at the end of the 19th century. The term, which is somewhat vague in
reference to music, was introduced by analogy with contemporaneous French
painting; it was disliked by Debussy himself. Elements often
termed impressionistic include static harmony, emphasis on instrumental timbres
that creates a shimmering interplay of “colors,” melodies that lack directed
motion, surface ornamentation that obscures or substitutes for melody, and an
avoidance of traditional musical form.

Claude Debussy is often regarded as the

master of Impressionism, and his works such as
'Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun' and 'La Mer' are
good examples of this connection with nature.

expressionism-music/

Impressionism and Expressionism are both

more concentrated on the right tone color than to
follow some rules. But expressionist music is more
dissonant and away from the traditional
western music. Also, it expresses deep emotions
rather than moments as the Impressionist music.

Impressionism is a style or
movement that depicts the visual
impression of the moment,
especially in terms of the shifting
effect of light and color.

2
The pentatonic scale is a 5-note scale (penta = 5) that originates with
folk music from Scotland, to Ireland, to China. This scale was often employed
in Impressionist music.

Typical instruments used in the Impressionist music are woodwind, strings, harp,
piano, small chamber.

The whole idea with Impressionism was that musicians – and artists – were drawn
to conveying moods with their music, instead of distinct melody lines. They wanted their
pieces to evoke a feeling.

Note: For you to experience further about examples of Impressionist music, you can

Remember

6
• Electronic music plays a big part to the music to help us explore “new” unusual

sounds and discovering the qualities of non-musical sounds and making

new musical structures

• Chance Music is used to give a certain amount of freedom with regard to

the sequencing and repetition of particular parts throughout a piece of

music. This style also makes music more interesting and teaches us that

music can also be everywhere.

Understanding
