THEME: Famous Places

TOPIC: Why does the United States have so many heritage sites?

Over the past 40 years period, the whole civilized world had experienced a bunch of memorable and most abiding
legacies that have been existed for a long time, and one of the most famous countries pioneering in unearthing the World's
Heritage Sites named America. According to National Park Services (2021), states that: "The United States played a key role
in developing the Convention, which itself is part of the global outgrowth and evolution of the American national park idea.
Since 1978, the United States has nominated some of its most iconic sites, as well as some lesser-known ones, for inclusion
on the prestigious World Heritage List." Moreover, the US also presents to its country and the entire world a wide range of
cultural and natural heritage sites. This essay will answer the question of why America has so many heritage sites.

First and foremost, discussing the natural heritage sites, the United States has several favorable conditions in the
context of ecological diversity, ecosystem, complex structure, and reasonable climate for acquiring natural heritages
bestowed by Mother Nature. Grand Canyon National Park, which is renowned in the state of Arizona, is the remarkable
ravine that attracts an influx of foreign and local holidaymakers. According to UNESCO article, Grand Caynon is "Widely
known for its exceptional beauty and considered one of the world's most visually powerful landscapes, the Grand Canyon is
celebrated for its plunging depths; temple-like buttes; and vast, multihued, labyrinthine topography. Scenic wonders with park
boundaries include high plateaus, plains, deserts, forests, cinder cones, lava flows, streams, waterfalls, and one of America's
great whitewater rivers." This is one of the main contributors to the worldwide known of the Grand Canyon for its massive
landscape because tourists are usually amazed by places that are magnificently colorful or delicate and also it makes this
gorge one of the well-known natural heritage sites in America. In addition, Yellowstone National Park is continuously a worth-
visited destination for travelers from all over the world, not only does it attract people for entertaining purposes but it is also
an idealized location for educational purposes. UNESCO article further claimed that: "Yellowstone is one of the world's
foremost sites for the study and appreciation of the evolutionary history of the earth. The park has a globally unparalled
assemblage of surficial geothermal activity, thousands of hot springs, mudpots and fumaroles, and more than half of the
world's active geysers." This worth-noticing point undoubtedly demonstrates that the ecosystem and many other aspects of

the United States are plentiful and divergent. Preservation of a place's natural features and system constraints, on the other
hand, could turn it into a national legacy. For instance, Yellowstone National Park has been carefully protected from
overcrowding whatsoever times, monitoring the visitation rate remains stable but must not be affected to the park's natural
wonders. However, this is not an easy mission to meet the requirements in a short-term period, but to attracts visitors and
develop into natural heritage sites, these places have put a lot of endeavors to stay popular overtimes.

On the other hand, as a nation, the United States takes great pride in its cultural identity, and many of its cultural
landmarks are internationally renowned. The most remarkable symbol of culture in the United States is definitely The Statue
of Liberty, located in New York Harbor inside New York City. As Sean Finelli (2021) explains in his article blog: " The Statue
of Liberty was created as the outcome of Edouard de Laboulaye’s idea for a monument to be gifted to the United States,
serving as a symbol of their friendly alliance and appreciation. It also commemorated the centennial of the Declaration of
Independence, a momentous event in history." This is the monument of great importance, not only for its grandeur and
sculptural talent, but also for its symbolism of peace, reconciliation, patriotism, and the unity of people. Another cultural
heritage spot that was equally significant to The Statue of Liberty is Independence Hall, placed in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania;
where the Declaration of Independence and The Constitution were both discussed, decided upon, and signed.
Besides, there are also Cahokia Mounds, in the north of Mexico, which cultural heritage is recognized and is believed to have
some significant historic cultural values. According to the UNESCO article: "Cahokia graphically demonstrates the existence
of a pre-urban society in which a powerful political and economic hierarchy was responsible for the organization of labor,
communal agriculture, and trade. This is reflected in the size and layout of the settlement and the nature and structure of the
public and private building." America, in particular, is a multicultural country with many immigrants from around the world, and
people value historical and culturally significant buildings. For that reason, American culture is wealthier than that of many
other low-immigrant countries. In short, cultural heritage sites of America are weigh too impressive and unimaginable for
everyone to visit once in their lives.

Conversely, not all of the US is valuable or suitable for every individual. Because it is just about the beliefs, or the
norms of a region in its nation because each country or continent has a particular weather condition, ecosystems, and
infrastructure facilities. Moreover, the heritage sites' main purpose is to recognize the natural and cultural wonders of a
country, since it will make its country become exclusively and extraordinarily attracts holidaymakers.

In conclusion, the United States is a paradise for tourism in terms of the variety of the biodiversity of the location in
each region. Moreover, it is an ideal country to have some beautiful or graceful pictures since it has a huge amount of
heritage spots covered inside the country. While the natural sites make tourists feel amazed by what the nature can bring to

us, then the cultural spots will make people have an insight look on its country's lifestyles. Hence, I highly recommend those
who are interested in traveling should have come to the USA once in life. Because Wallace Stevens once said: "The most
beautiful thing in the world is, of course, the world itself."
