Unit Foundation of Shorthand
Module Foundation of Shorthand
OACC1-FS Shorthand Units: 80hrs Page |2
Learning Objectives:
Transcribe the longhand strokes by following the principle of S-Z-A, silent letter,
Principle of F, V, E, N, M, T, D
Illustrate the punctuation and capitalization in shorthand
Translate the longhand to shorthand strokes by following the principle of O, R, L, H, -ing.
Shorthand is an abbreviated symbolic writing method that increases speed and brevity of
writing as compared to longhand, a more common method of writing language. The process of writing in
shorthand is called stenography, from Greek stenos (narrow) and graphein (to write).
S and Z
The most frequently used consonant in English language is s, partly because of the great
plurals that ends with s.
The shorthand s is a tiny short downward curve that resembles the longhand comma in
shape.
A
A is very important sound in English language. In Gregg shorthand a is simply the longhand a
with the connecting stroke omitted.
Silent Letters
In English, there are many words containing letters that are not pronounced. In Gregg
shorthand, this silent letters are omitted; only the sounds that you hear are actually written.
Example: the word SAY would be written s-a (the Y would not be written because it is
not pronounced.
SAY, s-a
F
The shorthand stroke for f is a downward curve same shape as s, but it is very long
approximately half the height of the space between the lines of your shorthand notebook.
F
V
The shorthand stroke for v is also a downward curve the same shape as s and f, but is very
large approximately the full height of the space between the lines of your shorthand notebook.
S F V
E
In shorthand, e is represented by a tiny circle. It is simply the longhand e with two
connecting strokes omitted.
A E
N and M
The shorthand stroke for n is a very short forward straight line while the m is a forward
straight line.
N M
T and D
The shorthand stroke for t is short upward straight line while the stroke for d is a longer
upward straight line.
T D
H and –ing
The letter H is a dot placed above the following vowel. With few exceptions, H occurs at the
beginning of a word.
-ing, which almost occurs at the end of a word, is also represented by a dot
