But, what will happen if there is a communication breakdown? We all know that
communication is essential for everyone, especially within society. There are different
problems that may arise when it happens like a confusion of the idea or misinterpretation,
loss of communication with others that may result in ending up of a relationship, and
there will be difficulties from every organization from understanding each other. Without
it, society cannot grow and there will be a lot of misunderstanding which can result in
chaos. If a communication breakdown happens it can really cause a big problem. It just
makes it difficult when the lines of communication don’t always flow smoothly. It makes
planning hard and breaks down trust and respect. That is why it is important to
communicate your thoughts or ideas correctly by sharing them with people around you for
them, to also be aware of what’s happening around the world.
When Berlin says “(in teaching writing), we are teaching a way of experiencing the
world, a way of ordering and making sense of it”, It implies that teaching provides
students with knowledge which they need and can be used in discovering themselves,
their capabilities and creativeness. Through this, they can utilize their learnings and use it
effectively. In writing, we use our experiences and creative minds to produce excellent
work. 2That is why there is a popular saying that “experience is the best teacher”. This is
because experiences either positive or negative, provide us with lifetime learnings and
ideas which we can apply in writing.
From my own perspective, it is not only in “teaching writing” that we are teaching a
way of experiencing the world, a way of ordering and making sense of it. You will also
learn more from things that happen to you in real life than you will from hearing about or
studying things that happen to other people. In my opinion, we can learn many things
inside the classroom but experiencing the world with ourselves adds up to our learnings.

COMMUNICATION ETHICS
3
Ethics deals with fundamental human relationships on how we think and behave
towards others and how we want them to think and behave towards us. 4It is a logical
understanding of right and wrong that sets out what people should do and should not do
whether it be in fairness, virtues, obligations, or rights. We have different view of what is
right or wrong and what is good or bad. Sometimes, we believe in what we think and feel
is right or good for us but it can be misleading. To be ethical means one has to be
reasonable with the application of doing what is right in terms of virtues and being fair
with the others.
Ethics should always be used when we are communicating with other people. In
order for us to have an effective communication, there should be understanding of what is
conveyed in the message. Ethics should always be considered when communicating with
others to avoid misunderstandings. In our everyday lives, we communicate wherever we
go. For example, an unfriendly reply to a question or query coming from a colleague at
the workplace gives a rude impression which suggests an unethical response. That certain
person might get hurt or be filled with be negative thoughts to the person who responded
unethically. A possible misunderstanding or conflict would arise too. One single offensive
response would mean a lot of things to the person you are conversing with that is why
one should be careful enough to every word being said. In short, Ethics in the field of
communication is significant because if the public sees someone as unreliable, rude and
unpleasant to talk with, it can have an unscrupulous effect on how his/her reputation.
Developing and practicing untrusting and rude communication ethics with others would
lead to an unsatisfying life. It can also give a destructive impact on our everyday life
routines.
Unethical communication results to ruined relationship and also broken trust with
one another. For example, you promised your friend something but you did not fulfill your
promise. Promises are commitments. Several studies show that people with strong
relationships has an emotional intelligence advantage and therefore they are more likely
to stay trustworthy to their commitments and/or promises. Keeping your word is very
important. Whether it is your commitment to yourself or to someone else, making

a promise is a commitment that you will keep your word. Your fulfillment to your
commitment strengthens trust. Your words have and hold more power than you think,
that is why it is crucial to filter what words are coming out from our mouths. Keeping your
word is part of being ethical because this defines who you are and what people think of
you. Words are the reflection of your existence and thus, they replicate your integrity as a
human being. So the next time that you make another promise to someone or even to
yourself, be committed in fulfilling it because at the end of the day, you will be held
accountable to it. Breaking promises is one of the easiest ways to end the trust someone
has for you. The credibility you've worked so hard to build for a long time, would possibly
fall through. Showing you regret the inconveniences and hassles you have caused in the
non-fulfillment of your promises will somehow minimize the damage, but it will go a long
way before you can regain the trust given by other people. Honoring the commitments,
you have made to yourself and to others teaches you that significance of following
something that would mean a lot to other people. Fulfilling your promises is equivalent to
being ethical in your communication with others. It would also indicate that you can follow
through on something and therefore, you are capable of changing your behavior for good.
Once you have managed to teach yourself and practice being ethical in every word your
say, you can change one behavior and it makes it much easier for you to become a good
influence to others. Being ethical is an important duty and a value to uphold since
doing the reverse is disrespectful and detrimental to our development as human beings.
Listening when others are speaking, speaking non-judgmentally and seeking to
understand others are ways of being ethical.
ETHICAL COMMUNICATION
Being honest means being truthful and sincere and it is still a virtue valid today
even though there has been a lot of changes in this world by the advancement of
technology. It remains a valuable virtue everyone wants. We all know that “honesty is the
best policy” but it is not just about telling truth to someone but it is also being true and
real with yourself and showing who you really are to others meant a lot. An honest person
makes him/ her very admirable and respectable. If you are honest with your family,
friends or people around you, you will have a strong and happy relationship. To live with
honesty means living an authentic and contented life.
Politicians who rule in this modern day especially here in the Philippines, are
consumed by their idea of winning the position and doing all their best just to aim for that
position. We all heard their commitments and word of honor which they always say good
things about them and how they promised that they will serve the people with all their
heart. But, when they are voted and they get their position some politicians abuse their
power. The way they communicate has somewhat forget their ethical manner when they
lose their temper. It is not nice to see how politicians nowadays does not have ethical
manner and formal way of communicating.
The people that comes to my mind on the subject of violating the ethics of communication are the politicians
and other influential people. They are the ones who has a power and have a lot of money. When it comes to the
political leaders, they are always opposing other parties by using harsh words and language. The use of their
words are not adequate and unethical which can affect the audience. On the other hand, some influential
people like the rich ones are also unethical when it comes to communicating with people who are inferior. They
treat them unkind and talk to them using harsh words. We all know that communication is very important and
has an impact to the audience. That is why we need to be wise on selecting words and be respectful from
everyone whatever status they are in life.
There are some instances where people act in an unethical manner when it comes
to communicating. There are people who purposely act unethical toward others because
they believe they can easily get what they want if they did that. While others
