Lydia de Vega – “The Filipina Iron” Lady was born on December 26, 1964 in
Meycauyan, Bulacan. The Asia’s sprint queen of the eighties became the country’s first
woman to run and compete in the Olympics. De Vega was a member of the Gintong Alay
Track and Field program instituted by President Marcos in 1979. She was coached by her
father Tatang De Vega and Claro Pellosis. But after 1980, she was trained by Magno Santos
with input from Australian Head coach Tony Beson. Lydia held the Philippine Record in
the 100m of 11.28 until 2020 until Kristina Knott broke it. She was held the National 200m
Record for 32 years with 23. 35.
Lydia De Vega, fondly called “Diay”, earned the name “Asia’s fastest sprinter” in
her time after carrying-off an impressive gold medal award in the 100 meter dash in the
1982 New Delhi Asiad. She defeated India’s P.T. Usha in 1986 Seoul Asiad’s 100 meter dash
with an imposing record of 11. 53 seconds to grab another gold medal. In the same Seoul
meet, she also bagged the silver medal in the 200-meter race. She brought home town gold
medals in 1981 Manila SEA Games, earning her the honor of Athlete of the Year” from the
Philippine Sportswriters Association (PSA). She was also given the same PSA tribute in
1986 and 1987. Before she decided to retire, she won another gold medal in the sprint race
in the 1993 Singapore SEA Games. She is a picture-perfect barrio lass who personified the
admirable traits of a Filipina- determined, disciplined, religious, and stunning grateful. She
remained a role model for the youth, which is rare for athletes today who easily succumb to
the false lure of glitz, glamour, and glory. But her achievements in that turbulent period are
the country’s few bright spots that shall forever be an inspiring tale for Filipinos.
REACTION:
After watching and knowing the life history of Lydia De Vega, there is a truth that
proves how a woman grows confidently in the field of sports. The unseen power that a
woman can do re still existing, yet some are just trying to hide it anyway. DevEga was a
great athlete actually and I am being proud and salute her for her dedication and
perseverance in the field. She made me realize that struggle is just an ounce and a pinch of
piece to a someone who believe itself. Life is just like a roller coaster, an ups and down
situation of life. But just like De Vega, she accepts, acknowledge, and live the challenges in

her own way until she uplifts herself by achieving her goals and making her country
proudly in a grip of her success.
Everything happens for a reason, if its not yet your time then learn to wait. This is
how remind me of De Vega that despite of her failure she never stops chasing and
possessing her skills, perhaps she improves it well. I like the way she was setting her goals
by being consistent mindset in the field of sport with humility, discipline, and attitude.
Therefore, the life of athletic should empower and embrace great endurance in the matter
of training. One should value the regular exercise and some options of fitness style to
further maintain and ensure a positive impact of health mentally, physically, and
spiritually.
