Specimen
You are Kirti Shah and you have recently taken admission in a new school. Write a diary entry in 120
words describing vividly the feelings and experience of your first day in the new school.
April 6th, 2018
8.00 p.m.

Dear Diary
I nervously walked into my new school. Somehow I was sure that the feeling of loneliness would creep
in.
Dad left me at the gate and wished me Good Luck! I knew I needed it badly.
I went straight to the office. I then approached a group of girls. I politely asked them where the standard
7th classes were. They showed me the way but did not converse with me. I walked towards my class
and then again there were groups of students standing. Someone said Hi!
I responded. A girl approached me and soon we sat chatting about different things. The day passed
with teachers’ and students’ introduction, I felt I was a day old in the school. Not a bad feeling after all!

You are Deepa Sharma. You recently had a chance encounter with an old school friend in the market
place. Record your feelings about it in your diary in 120 words.
25th May, 2018
9.00 p.m.

Dear Diary
Today was a day full of surprises. I met my old school friend Anita after many years. I chanced upon
her at the ‘Big Bazar’ shopping plaza, where I had gone to pick up groceries for the next week.
As I paid my bill, I saw a familiar looking face staring at me with curiosity. Suddenly, it dawned
simultaneously on both of us that each of us was staring at a long lost dear friend. Our joy knew no
bounds as we rushed towards each other.
A wave of nostalgia swept over us as we recalled our bygone days over a cup of coffee. How beautiful
were those days full of fun, laughter and mischief! We parted after promising to remain in touch with
each other.

Sir

I am a responsible resident of this city. And I would like to make use of the columns of your newspaper
to highlight the plight of our colony.
(Leave a line)
The roads leading to the main market are in pitiable condition. Despite representations to the
concerned department, the road has not been re-carpeted for the last four years. The streetlights on
these roads have been non-functional for quite some time. Garbage is dumped on either sides of the
main road. Wild growth of plants adds to our problems.

Dear Garima

It’s been ages since I have heard from you. I hope you are doing good and enjoying the holidays. I am
writing this letter to tell you about a very inspiring book that I have just finished reading. I am sure you
must have heard about it – ‘I am Malala’. The book is about a courageous girl from Pakistan who dared
to defy the conservative mind-set and propagated girl education. The fifteen year old Malala Yousafzai
was shot in head for her daring attitude, but she survived miraculously. In the book, she had mentioned
about her personal struggles, the difficult conditions of her country, the conservative approach of the
authorities and her efforts to change the scenario. After the tragic episode of her being shot, she
became a public figure and a symbol of peace and courage. She was also bestowed upon with the
prestigious Nobel Prize in 2014.
Her story has really inspired me and I am sure you will like the book too. The book is easily available
online. Do read it and write to me soon. Convey my regards to your family.

Yours affectionately
