You often see the imperative form in instruction manuals or when someone tells you how to do
something. There are often “sequencing” words to show the steps in the process. For example,
“firstly”, “secondly” and “finally”.

a) Giving commands

We often use an imperative in commands, and we also use must. They both sound very direct:
 In class: Stop talking now!
 A father to his child: Don’t press that button.
 a mother to a child: You must wear a coat. It’s raining.
 A teacher to an student: Bring your copybook to me, please

b) Following instructions
We often use ordinal numbers in recipes, procedures and the verbs in base form. They both sound very
direct:
 First, boil the water; second, put the pasta into the pot; third, put the boil water into the pot.
 First, look at the board; then take your pencil; after that copy from the board; finally, show to
your teacher.

Tuesday. Tuesday is really long. Lessons start at 8:55 a.m. and go on till 3:20 p.m. I've got Art, English, Maths,

have Music, Biology, Maths, English and Physics. In the evening I have my Film Club.
It starts at 4:00 p.m. and we usually watch a film and finish at 5:30 p.m. I'm back at home at about 6:00 p.m.
Usually I'm dead tired!
Thursday. Thursday is OK because I start school at 8:45 a.m. and finish at 1 :30 p.m. I've got double Computer
Science, RE, English and History and no extra activities! I do most of my homework and housework on Thursday.
From time to time me, my mum and my dad make a short visit to say “hello” to my grandpa. Sometimes when Dad
comes home early we all go somewhere – to the zoo, to the park or we go shopping.
Friday. At the and of my week at school, on Friday, I start school at 8:00 a.m. and finish at1:30 p.m. I have English,

plan our week ahead.

“Don't do too much. Have an evening to yourself." I think she is right.
Wednesday. Lessons start at 8:00 again, just like Monday. I finish school at 12:35 p.m. - the earliest in
the week. I have Music, Biology, Maths, English and Physics. In the evening I have my Film Club.
It starts at 4:00 p.m. and we usually watch a film and finish at 5:30 p.m. I'm back at home at about 6:00
p.m. Usually I'm dead tired!
Thursday. Thursday is OK because I start school at 8:45 a.m. and finish at 1 :30 p.m. I've got double
Computer Science, RE, English and History and no extra activities! I do most of my homework and
housework on Thursday. From time to time me, my mum and my dad make a short visit to say “hello” to
my grandpa. Sometimes when Dad comes home early we all go somewhere – to the zoo, to the park or
we go shopping.
Friday. At the and of my week at school, on Friday, I start school at 8:00 a.m. and finish at1:30 p.m. I
have English, Maths, twice P.E., Geography and Spanish. The computer club people meet up at 2 p.m.
for around and an hour and I’m back at home at 2:30 p.m. My best friend Tim, often comes for an hour
or two and we play together and plan our week ahead.

Grammar Bite

What is a prediction? Predictions are created by combining TWO things: 1- clues the author
leaves for the reader, such as the words, pictures or text features and 2- what you know.

Justifying predictions: When asking kids to make predictions {or use any other comprehension
strategy}, I firmly believe it is important to ask kids WHY they think that. In their answer, I’m
listening for them to connect to the text in some way and/or to use their schema or background
knowledge.

General predictions
There are two ways we can make predictions about the future.

The simple future with will is one of the ways that we can make predictions. We can use this form to
make almost any prediction about the future, whether we are talking about tomorrow or a hundred
years from now.

We can also use the future with going to if we want to make general predictions about the future. Be
sure to read to the end of this lesson to see the special predictions that we make with this tense.

Examples:

 Correct: Greta will arrive on time. She is always very punctual.

OR
Greta is going to arrive on time. She is always very punctual.

 Incorrect: Greta is arriving today.

Remember that it is not correct to make predictions using the present progressive.
We only use this tense when we are talking about arrangements.

Expressing certainty and uncertainty

We can use probably and possibly with will to make less certain predictions about the future.

Advances in technology mean that buying a computer will probably get cheaper.
Using touchscreen devices will possibly have a negative effect on children's handwriting skills.

We can also use I think, I expect and I'm sure with will to make predictions that we are less certain
about.

I think everyone will have microchips in their heads one day.

I expect mapping technology will improve a lot with more and more wifi spots.
I'm sure smartphones will be much cheaper.

So, thinking about the question at the beginning of this activity: Which is more probable: Next year I will
move abroad or Next year I might move abroad? The answer is... I will move abroad is more
probable! We use will for things we think are more certain and might for things we think are less
certain.

Tracy and Michael practically bounced in their excitement. They were going fishing with Grandpa and Grandma
Ferguson today. There was a circular pond at the end of their road, and the weather was perfect for fishing
because it wasn’t too hot but the sun was shining brightly. The four of them walked the short distance to the pond,
then Grandpa and Grandma Ferguson showed them how to put worms on their fishing hooks. Tracy cast her line
into the shimmering water. A moment later, Michael cast in his line, too. It only took a few minutes for Tracy to get
a bite. She pulled up on her rod. Then she reeled in the line. She had caught a fish! Grandma helped her unhook
the fish. Then they tossed it back in the water so it could swim away. Michael gasped in excitement. Now he had a
bite, too!

bathroom there is a bath, a washbasin, the toilet, a mirror above the washbasin and a rug on the floor.
Downstairs there is a living room, a kitchen and the hall. On the hall we have the stairs and some paintings on the
wall. There is no dining room and so we eat our meals in the kitchen. The kitchen is quite large. It has got a table in
the center, two chairs, a fridge, a cooker, a big white cupboard where we keep our plates and glasses, a washing

An unusual home
Luke Matthews has an amazing home, but he doesn’t live in a house – he lives in a lighthouse. The
lighthouse is near the sea so you can see it and hear it every day. The lighthouse is not a quiet place
to live because there’s always a lot of sound but there are no cars or people near. Luke says the
lighthouse is an ideal home to work and live in. So why is a lighthouse a good place for Luke? “Well,
the first reason is that it’s easy for me to work when there are no people around. I can turn off the
telephone and write in peace. Secondly, the views from the lighthouse are just wonderful. When
there’s a big storm it’s wonderful. Finally, I love sea life. So, does Luke have any problems with his
unusual home? “Not really. I can’t grow vegetables in the garden because of the wind, and there are
too many rabbits! It takes me 30 minutes to walk to the nearest village. In this village, there are some
stores and also a bar if I want to meet some other people but I prefer being by myself. For me it’s the
perfect place!”

Grammar Bite

I. There Is vs. There Are: How to Choose?

a) The choice between the phrases there is and there are at the beginning of a sentence is
determined by the noun that follows it.
For example
 There is an Apple in the basket
 There are families on vacation
b) Use there is when the noun is singular (“There is a cat”). Use there are when the noun is
plural (“There are two cats”).
For example:
 There is a cat on the roof
 There are dogs in the park

II. There Is vs. There Are

a) You probably know that the choice between is vs. are depends on a noun. In most
sentences, the noun comes before the verb. But in sentences that begin with there is
and there are, the noun comes later.
For example:
There is a cat on the porch. (In the sentence a, cat is singular, so it requires there is).
b) There are many opportunities to learn at this company.
In the sentence, opportunities is plural, so it requires there are. (Don’t let the word many throw
you off—concentrate on the noun.)
For example:
There are cats and dogs in this building.

III. There Is a Number of vs. There Are a Number of

a) There are a number of unnamed stars in our galaxy? There is a number of unnamed
stars in our galaxy? It’s difficult to tease out whether you should use is or are in a
construction like this. The verb is being pulled toward there, number, and stars all at
once.

b) But if you really can’t rewrite it, you’ll have to make a choice. Use is if you want to
emphasize the group; use are if you want to emphasize the individual members.
For example:
 There is a wide variety of flavors to choose from.
 There are a variety of unique destinations we can visit.

Grammar Bite

Cultures have many elements in common, these elements are shared by every culture around
the world:

a) Religion:

the belief in and worship of a superhuman controlling power, especially a personal God or gods.
"ideas about the relationship between science and religion"

b) Education:

is about learning skills and knowledge. It also means helping people to learn how to do things
and support them to think about what they learn. It's also important for educators to teach
ways to find and use information.

c) Folclore:

The traditional: beliefs, customs, and stories of a community, passed through the generations
by word of mouth.

d) Symbols

Are the basis of culture. A symbol is an object, word, or action that stands for something else
with no natural relationship that is culturally defined. Everything one does throughout their life
is based and organized through cultural symbolism. Symbolism is when something represents
abstract ideas or concepts.

e) Language

points to the culture of a particular social group. Learning a language, therefore, is not only
learning the alphabet, the meaning, the grammar rules and the arrangement of words, but it is
also learning the behavior of the society and its cultural customs.

f) Laws

the system of rules which a particular country or community recognizes as regulating the
actions of its members and which it may enforce by the imposition of penalties.

Time to practice
Model practice. Read the paragraph and find the text in the word box (Lee el texto y encuéntralo en
la sopa de letras)

When travelling to other countries and cultures, you should try to adopt some of their norms
and values. It is polite to follow their table etiquette when eating and even wear non-revealing
clothes in public. So, as a tourist, remember to be polite, try to be socially acceptable and try to
show your respect to another culture, since your attitude to another culture can carry a
thousand messages. Therefore, the moral of the story is 'When in Rome, do as the Romans do.'

Hello, my name is Sam, and I am 11 years old. Every day I get up at 10.00 in the morning, I
have a cheese sandwich and a glass of milk. I walk to school at 12.00 and I have lunch at
school. On Monday I have physical education and it is my favorite class.
I come back home at 6:30 and I have dinner with my mom or dad, depending who is at
home.
I love to go to school in the afternoon, because I can get up late.
