Mental and Emotional Health
Mental and Emotional Health

Having good mental and emotional health helps develop self-esteem.

Does it feel good to be rewarded for good grades? Do you have a positive outlook out
yourself? Can you handle challenges in life well? If you answered yes to all three
questions, then you are a mentally and emotionally healthy person. Mental and
emotional health is defined as the ability to accept yourself and others, express and
manage your emotions, and deal with the demands and challenges in life. It helps you
function well every day. As you have learned in unit 1, this is an important dimension of
holistic health.
Life is not a bed of roses. You may be happy one day because you did well in school, but
disappointed the next when you were not chosen to be the representative of your class
in a contest. These ups and downs are normal, especially during the teenage years when
you are adapting to so many changes.

The following are some characteristics of individuals who have good mental and
emotional health:
1. Having a sense of belongingness
Feeling close to your family, friends, and teachers provides support to you.
2. Having a sense of purpose
Knowing your value and recognizing your importance helps you set goals and
reach for them.

3. Having a positive outlook

Looking at the bright side of life increases your chances of success and reduces
stress.

4. Being self-sufficient
Being confident in making responsible decisions can promote your sense of self-
assurance and independence.

5. Having high self-esteem

Having high self-esteem makes you accept and recover from failures and
difficulties. It makes you resilient, which means you have the ability to adapt
effectively and recover from any crisis or difficulty in life.
Stress, Eustress, and Distress

Let's say you are invited to your friend's birthday party, but you also have an exam the
next day. This kind of situation can cause you stress. It is not true that people should try
to avoid all situations leading to stress. Stress is a normal part of life, and you cannot
avoid it. In fact, stress can have a positive outcome.
Stress is defined as a response of the body and mind to challenges and threats. It is
experienced by everyone when situations or people make demands on your mind and
body. Stress can be positive if it helps you escape from dangerous situations and
accomplish your goals. Positive stress is called eustress, whereas negative stress is called
distress.

Eustress is defined as a positive type of stress and enhances our functioning.

An example of Eustress, would be a challenging work assignment that is perceived to be
neither too difficult nor too easy. Another example, would be a strength training
workout.
On the other hand, distress is an unpleasant emotion, feeling, thought, condition, or
behavior. Distress can affect the way you think, feel, or act, and can make it hard to
cope with having cancer, along with dealing with symptoms, treatment, and side effects.
People might describe distress as feeling: sad.
Stressors in Life
A Stressor is a situation or event that causes stress. A difficult homework, an argument
with a friend, or even a ringing alarm clock are examples of stressors. There are four
general types of stressors: major life changes, catastrophes, everyday problems, and
environmental problems.
1. Major life changes
How did you feel on the first day of school? You might have felt nervous or
excited, or experienced both emotions. The first day of school is an example or a
major life change. Major life changes are stressful because you need to adjust to
a new situation. These changes can also challenge your self-esteem. Examples of
major life changes include graduating from high school, experiencing a death of a
loved one, having a new born brother or sister, getting sick, moving to a new
place, failing a subject, having parents lose their jobs, and not making it to a
varsity team. What three major life changes have you experienced during the
past two years?

2. Catastrophes
An event that threatens lives and destroys property is called a catastrophe. This is
a highly stressful and unexpected event. Natural disasters such as earthquake,
typhoon, and flooding are examples of catastrophes. War, violent crimes, and
terrorism are also included in these events. A person experiencing a catastrophe
may deal with the psychological effects for months or even years after the event.
In fact, reading about a catastrophe or seeing images of them can already be
stressful.

3. Everyday problems
Minor but frequent everyday events can become stressors too. These stressors
are often called hassles. These include situations like having too many
assignments within the day and misplacing your things. These events may seem
minor, but they contribute to your stress level. A disagreement or conflict can
also be a source of stress. Students may experience more conflicts in high school
than they did during their grade school years. Petty issues such as how you dress
and who your friends are can cause conflict and stress. Some people do not want
to get low grades and disappoint their parents. This pressure is a major source of
stress as well. Can you name some everyday problems you experienced
yesterday that were stressful for you?

4. Environmental problems
The condition in your surroundings can also affect your stress level. If you take an
overcrowded bus or the MRT, your level of stress may be high by the time you
reach school. And when you look for a book in a messy bookshelf, your level of
stress may continue to go up. Noise is also a major stressor. People living near
airports have been noted to have high stress levels because of the noise of
airplanes. Living in crowded and unsafe conditions also increase stress levels. This
also applies to people living in polluted areas. Weather conditions can also lead
to stress. How do you feel during the hot summer months?
