A dietician has learned from a nutrition book that his family needs at least 300 grams of protein and at
least 60 milligrams of iron per day for sound health. These nutrients can be obtained from meat and
vegetable products. On the average, each pound of meat cost Php 60 with 150 grams of protein and 15
milligrams of iron; while vegetables are at Php 15 with 10 grams of protein and 5 milligrams of iron. The
dietician wants to determine the quantities of food that will meet the nutritional requirements at the least
possible cost.
1. What are the decision variables?
Let: x = meat; y = vegetables

Meat (x) Vegetable (y)

Protein 150 10
Iron 15 5
Cost (c) 60 15

2. Specify the objective function.

c = 60x +15y

3. Formulate and solve each of the constraints.

1. 150x + 10y ≥ 300
Solution:
150x + 10y ≥ 300 150x + 10y ≥ 300
150x + 10 (0) ≥ 300 150(0) + 10y ≥ 300
150x/150 = 300/150 10y/10 = 300/10
x=2 y = 30

2. 15x + 5y ≥ 60
Solution:
15x + 5(0) ≥ 60 15(0) + 5y ≥ 60
15 x 60 5 y 60
= =
15 15 5 5
x=4 y = 12

3. x, y ≥ 0

4. Plot the constraints on a graph.

5. Determine the vertices and the respective quantities of meat and vegetables, and their costs.

(explanation kung bakit pataas yung feasible region incase lang)

pataas yung feasible region para ma satisfy yung constraint na x, y ≥ 0 kasi if sa (0,0) yung point
ng intersection, ganto yung solution niya:

Checking (0,0)
150x + 10y ≥ 300
150(0) + 10(0) ≥ 300
0 ≥ 300 (did not satisfy the constraint)

(hindi na satisfy yung constraint so hindi pwedeng maging (0,0) yung intersection kasi mas
maliit yung 0 sa 300)

Infinite or extend din talaga yung feasible region kasi madami naman talaga options or
pagbibilhan ng meat and vegetables

Solution for the intersection in the feasible region:

150x + 10y ≥ 300
(15x + 5y ≥ 60) (-10)

150x + 10y = 300 150x + 10y ≥ 300

-150x -50y = 600 (subtraction) 150x + 10(7.5) ≥ 300
0 – 40y = -300 150x + 75 ≤ 300
−40 y −300 150x ≥ 300 -75
=
−40 −40 150 y 225

y = 7.5 150 150
x ≥ 1.5
Vertices:
a. (0,30)
b. (1.5,7.5)
c. (4,0)
Solution for the costs:
c = 60x +15y
a. c = 60(0) +15(30) = 450
b. c = 60(1.5) +15(7.5) = 202.5
c. c = 60(4) +15(0) = 202.5

Meat (x) Vegetables (y) Cost (c)

0 30 450
1.5 7.5 202.5
4 0 240

6. What is the optimal solution?

Meat (x) Vegetables (y) Cost (c)
0 30 450
1.5 7.5 202.5
4 0 240

7. What is the decision?

The decision would be to buy 1.5 pound of meat which will contain 225 grams of protein and
22.5 milligrams of iron, and 7.5 (8 if iroround off) vegetable which will contain 75 grams of
protein and 37.5 milligrams of iron. 1.5 pound of meat and 7.5 vegetables would meet the
nutritional requirements of at least 300 grams of protein and 60 milligrams of iron with the least
possible cost of 202.5

Light Yagami’s Furniture Shop manufactures two products: book cabinets and dressers, which pass
through two process: Assembly and Furnishing. The assembly department has 60 hours of work available
while furnishing department has 48 hours per week. Manufacturing one book cabinets need 4 hours in
assembly and 2 hours in finishing. To produce a dresser, it would need 2 hours in assembly and 4 hours in
finishing. If the profit generated in Php 80 and 60 for each of the products respectively, how many book
cabinets and dressers should be produced in order to produce the maximum profit per week?
Decision variables: Let: x = book cabinets; y = dressers

book cabinets dressers (y)

(x)
Assembly Time 4 2
Finishing Time 2 4
Profit (p) 80 60

OBJECTIVE FUNCTION: p = 80x + 60y

CONSTRAINTS:

1. 4x +2y ≤ 60
Solution:
4x +2y ≤ 60 4x +2y ≤ 60
4x +2(0) ≤ 60 4(0) +2y ≤ 60
4 x 60 2 y 60
≤ ≤
4 4 2 2
x ≤15 y ≤ 30

2. 2x +4y ≤ 48
2x +4y ≤ 48 2x +4y ≤ 48
2x +4(0) ≤ 48 2(0) +4y ≤ 48
2 x 48 4 y 48
≤ ≤
2 2 4 4
x ≤ 24 y ≤ 12

GRAPH (lagay ko na lang din incase)

Solution for the intersection in the feasible region:
4x +2y ≤ 60
(2x +4y ≤ 48) (-2)

4x +2y = 60 −6 y −36
=
−6 −6
-4x –8y = -96 (subtraction)
y=6
0 – 6y = -36
4x +2(6) ≤ 60
4x +12 ≤ 60 4 x 48
=
4 4
4x ≤ 60 -12
x = 12
SOLUTION FOR MAXIMUM PROFIT
p = 80x + 60y
a) p = 80(15) + 60(0) = 1,200
b) p = 80(0) + 60(12) = 720
c) p = 80(12) + 60(6) = 1,320

book cabinets dressers (y) Profit (p)

(x)
0 0 0
15 0 1,200
0 12 720
12 6 1,320

Light Yagami’s Furniture Shop should produce 12 book cabinets and 6 dressers in order to produce the
maximum profit of 1,320 per week.
