Data Gathering: Sample and Sample Determination

TASK 1: Carefully read and understand Reading material No.1. A research objective is
presented. For each research objective, identify the population and sample in the study.

1. The Philippine Mental Health Associations contacted 1,028 teenagers who are 13 to 17
years of age, live in Antipolo City, and asked whether they had been prescribed medications
for any mental disorders, such as depression or anxiety.

Population: 1028

Sample: Teen Ager in antipolo city (ages 13 to 17 years old)

2. A scientist takes a big bucket of water from a lake and counts how many species of
bacteria, bugs, and other creepy crawlies he finds in the bucket.

Population:

Sample: Living organism(bacteria, bugs, etc)

3. Marco is conducting an experiment on training certain breeds of dogs. He wants to know


how long, on average, it would take to teach a Labrador to fetch an object. He gets a group of
dogs to conduct his experiment. 5 of the dogs are Labradors and 3 of the dogs are Dalmatians.

Population: 5 labradors and 3 dalmatians

Sample: dog breeds (Labrador and Dalmatians)

4. A researcher was interested in the effectiveness of a given learning program in preparing


100 high school juniors from five different schools for the Entrance Examination. He will
only use 30% of the population

Population: 100 students per school = 500 students


Sample: junior highschool

5. An agency wants to know the opinions of Georgia residents on the construction of Highway
316. The agency surveys 800 residents. 600 residents approve the construction. 200 residents
disapprove of the construction. The agency concludes that Georgia residents are pleased with
the construction

Population: 800 person

Sample: Georgia residents
