In the early hours of 24 June 24 2021, one wing of the Champlain Towers South in Surfside
near Miami, Florida, suffered a brittle collapse resulting in significant loss of life. Following the
failure, the town of Surfside made available on its website all documents related to the project
including drawings. A quick study of structural drawings provides valuable insights into the
practice of flat slab design and construction of the time. The unfortunate incident provides an
opportunity for the Indian structural engineering community to introspect and review the current
practices in the design and development of similar types of construction.
The event on 8 July 2021 will discuss the inherent vulnerabilities of the collapsed structure
and juxtapose it with the code requirements and design practices prevalent then and now. Also, it
will present a discussion on the issues involved in flat slab buildings, the evolution of design codes
over the past four decades, and the improvements needed in the application of such structural
systems in the road ahead…
