PAMAMANHIKAN
Respect is highly emphasized in the Filipino culture and Pamamanhikan is the groom
and bride's way of honoring their parents. During the Pamamanhikan, the family of the groom
visits the house of the bride. In the past, the pamamanhikan is the formal occasion when the
man formally asks the woman's hand in marriage in front of her parents, grandparents and the
rest of her family. This was the time when women are expected to be shy. They can't even be
left alone with another man unless they're related by blood. It's essentially a get-together
hosted by the bride's family and attended by the groom's family. The groom's family arrives
with gifts and treats. As part of another ritual known as the paninilbihan, the groom will
occasionally execute activities for the bride's family. In the early years, the pamamanhikan
was a formal ceremony when a man publicly asked a woman for her permission to marry in
front of her parents, grandparents, and other family members.
