T’boli - South Cotobato

- One of the tribal groups that lives in Mindanao


- Formerly known as “Tagabili” (dont call them that... they won’t like it)
- Language:
A. Tboli (a Malayo-Polynesian language)
B. Ilongo
C. Bilaan

- They practice the “kaingin” (slash-and-burn) method of agriculture


- Their garments are that of distinctive and colorful which characterizes a T’boli man and
woman. It is also their source of ethnic pride

- Rituals:
A. H’TEFOD KENUGU
- A welcoming ritual where the child’s nails are cut by the Datu and offers it to the
gods and in return, the Datu offers T’LES KENUGU (any property/gong) whilst
the other members of the community would give L’TOK (rings, coins etc)

B. KESIYAHAN (MARRIAGE)
- It is a 3-stage process and it begins in childhood to puberty and adolescence.
- This is an arranged marriage ritual performed on a sick child to determine if the
child is in need of a life partner, thus making her a Banahung. A chosen spouse
will be brought to the child to heal her.
- The first marriage happens after the recovery of the child. The next marriage
happens when they reach the age of puberty and it is celebrated on the night of
the full moon.
- MO NINUM : renewal of marriage celebrated over a period of 2 - 6 years. It is
celebrated alternately by both families.

C. K’MOLOT LIBOL (TRIAL BY ORDEAL)


- Administered by the Datu or the Libun Boi (Queen).
- Grains of rice are placed in a pot with stone and is filled with water. It is left for a
while to boil, afterwards the accused has to get the stone inside the pot.
- The judgement is based on the condition of the hand after retrieving the stone
BURNT HAND = GUILTY
FINE HAND = INNOCENT
- The thief must pay a fine and return the stolen item.
- Those who committed adultery shall return the bride price and pay a fine which
equates to thrice the amount of the bride’s dowry with his/her lover.
