Height of Ladders. If two ladders are placed end to end, their combined height is
31.5 feet. One ladder is 6.5 feet shorter than the other ladder. What are the height
of the two ladders?
Given: one ladder = x - 6.5 feet
other ladder = x
combined height = 31.5 feet
Solution:
other ladder:
x + x – 6.5 = 31.5
2x – 6.5 = 31.5
2x = 6.5 + 31.5
2 x /2 = 38/2
x = 19
one ladder
x – 6.5
19 – 6.5 = 12.5
Checking:
Combined height: 19 + 12.5 = 31.5
Answer: The height of the two ladders are 19 feet and 12.5 feet
Step 1: Simplify the map. You can simplify the map by drawing squares and
rectangles, putting lines where there should be roads or streets.
Step 2: In every intersection, write the number of direct routes taken to reach
that exact intersection. (Note: only count routes that go towards the destination,
which is point B)
a. How many direct routes are there from A to B if you want to pass by Starbucks?
Answer: There are five direct routes from A to B that passes by Starbucks.
1st route – First Avenue – Board Walk – Third Avenue – Gateway Boulevard –
Fourth Avenue – B
2nd route – First Avenue – Board Walk – Third Avenue – Park Avenue – Fourth
Avenue – B
3rd route – River Walk – Third Avenue – Gateway Boulevard – Fourth Avenue – B
4th route – River Walk – Fourth Avenue – Board Walk – Third Avenue – Park
Avenue – Fourth Avenue – B
5th route – River Walk – Fourth Avenue – Board Walk – Third Avenue – Gateway
Avenue – Fourth Avenue
b. How many direct routes are there from A to B if you want to stop at Subway for a
sandwich?
Answer: There are three direct routes from A to B that passes by a Subway.
1st route – First Avenue – Board Walk – Third Avenue – Park Avenue – Fourth
Avenue – B
2nd route – First Avenue – Board Walk – Third Avenue – Gateway Boulevard –
Fourth Avenue - B
3rd route – First Avenue – Board Walk – Fourth Avenue - B
c. How many direct routes are there from A to B if you want to stop at Starbucks
and at a Subway?
Answer: There are two direct routes from A to B that passes by Starbucks and a
Subway.
1st route – First Avenue – Board Walk – Third Avenue – Gateway Boulevard –
