The key takeaways are that concentration of a solution refers to the amount of solute dissolved in a given amount of solvent. More concentrated solutions have more solute dissolved whereas more diluted solutions have less solute dissolved. The concentration can be expressed in terms of percentage by mass, volume, or mass-volume.

The concentration of a solution refers to the amount of solute that has been dissolved in a given amount of solvent or solution. A more concentrated solution has a relatively large amount of dissolved solute whereas a more diluted solution has a relatively small amount of dissolved solute.

Preparing solutions of a desired concentration is necessary in food and drink production, household products like cleaners, and medicines. It is also important in agriculture for maintaining proper soil pH and in industries like automotive manufacturing.

Introductory Message
Welcome to Grade 7 Science.

The Sci-Box (A Self-Learning Package) for Junior High School is developed to

guide you our dear learners to meet the standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum.

The Sci-Box aims to guide our learners in accomplishing activities at their own
pace and time. This also aims to assist learners in developing and achieving the life-
SCIENCE
long learning skills while considering their needs and situations.

For learning facilitator: Quarter 1| Lesson 1

The Sci-Box is developed to address the current needs of the learner to continue
learning in the comforts of their homes or learning centers. As the learning facilitator,
make sure that you give them clear instructions on how to study and accomplish the
given activities in the material. Learner’s progress must be monitored.

For the learner:

The Sci-Box is developed to help you, dear learner, in your needs to continue
learning even if you are not in school. This learning material aims to primarily provide
you with meaningful and engaging activities for independent learning. Being an active
learner, carefully read and understand to follow the instructions given.

REMEMBER ….
To answer the given exercises, questions and assessment, USE your Science Activity
Notebook or Answer Sheet. When you are DONE, wait for the teacher/volunteer to
collect your Activity notebook or Answer Sheet.

Good luck and God bless.

Concentrations of Solutions
Learning Competency:
Express concentrations of solutions quantitatively by
preparing different concentrations of mixtures according
to uses and availability of materials (S7MT – Id – 3)
Ready to Launch!
Do you know what a solution is? Do you know that the water you drink or
the soft drink that you enjoy are solutions? A solution is a mixture that have uni-
form appearance and properties. Solutions may be solids dissolved in liquids or
gases dissolved in liquids. There are also solutions where a gas is dissolved in an-
other gas, a liquid in another liquid or a solid in another solid. Many materials
around us can be used efficiently only when they are in the form of solutions.
The concentration of a solution is the amount of solute present in a giv-
en quantity of it. Depending upon the amount of solute present, it is called a dilut-
ed or concentrated solution.

Aim at the Target!

After getting through this modules, you will be able to:

1. describe the concentration of solutions quantitatively,

2. distinguish dilute from concentrated solutions, and
3. compute the concentration of solutions through percent by volume
and percent by mass.

Try This!

Multiple Choices: Write the letter of the correct answer.

1. Which solution has a higher concentration of particles?

Solution A Solution B
a. Solution A c. both A and B
b. Solution B d. neither; their concentration are the
same

2. A solution is prepared by mixing 20g of sodium chloride in 80g

water. What are the concentrations of the solute and solvent in % by mass?

a. solute: 10%, solvent: 90% c. solute: 30%, solvent: 70%

b. solute: 20%, solvent: 80% d. solute: 40%, solvent: 60%
3. A beverage contains 3% alcohol which means that
a. The solution contains 3ml of alcohol in 97ml of water.
b. The solution contains 30ml of alcohol in 70ml of water.
c. The solution contains 300ml of alcohol in 700ml of water.
d. The solution contains 100ml of alcohol in 100ml of water.

Keep This in Mind!

Activity 1: Dilute or Concentrated?
There are two main types of solutions. The solution that has a
small amount of solute for a certain volume of solvent is called diluted so-
lution. The solution that has a large amount of solute in comparison to the
amount of solvent is called concentrated solution.

Things that are needed:

2ml orange juice
2 transparent glasses (filled with 50ml water)
dropper
stirrer
Procedure:
1. Label each glass as A and B.
2. Add 5 drops of orange juice in glass A and 20 drops of orange
juice in glass B.
3. Stir each solution using a teaspoon.
4. Observe.
Questions:
1. In which glass was less amount of orange juice added?
What is its appearance?
2. In which glass was the most amount of orange juice
placed? Describe its appearance.
3. Compare the two glasses. Which is diluted? Which is
concentrated?
4. What can you say about solutions based on what you
observed?
Activity 2: Percent by volume and percent by mass

Concentration of solution can be expressed in other ways such as per-

cent by volume and percent by mass. Percent by volume is the amount of so-
lute in a given volume of solution expressed as grams solute per 100 milliliter
of solution (g/100ml). Percent by mass is the amount of solute in a given
mass of solvent expressed as grams solute per 100 grams of solution
(g/100g).

Sample problem 1

What is the percent by volume of ethyl alcohol in a 50 mL bottle of alco-

hol solution that contains 35 mL of ethyl alcohol?

Percent by Volume = Volume of solute x 100%

Volume of solution

Percent by Volume = 35 mL x 100% = 70%

50 mL
Sample problem 2

A one peso coin has a mass of 5.4 grams. What is the percent by mass of
copper in a one peso coin containing 4.05 g of copper?

Percent by Mass = mass of solute x 100%

mass of solution

Percent by Mass = 4.05 g x 100% = 75%

5.4 g

PROBLEM SOLVING:

1. What is the percent by volume of ethanol in a solution that contains

25mL of ethanol dissolved in 200mL of water?

2. Calculate the percent by mass of 14.25g of silver dissolved in a 15g of

Sterling silver
necklace?
Analysis

You went to the sari-sari store to buy pineapple juice to quench your
thirst. There were two stores selling pineapple juice across your house. Store
A has a jug filled with pale yellow juice made of 1000ml of water added with 1
tbsp. of pineapple juice powder while Store B has prepared 2L of bright yellow
juice consisting of water mixed with 5 tbsp. of pineapple juice powder. From
which store are you going to buy your juice if you want a stronger flavored
pineapple juice? How much is the concentration of the pineapple juice from
each store?

Abstraction and Generalization

The concentration of a solution is a measure of the amount of solute

that has been dissolved in a given amount of solvent or solution. A concen-
trated solution is one that has a relatively large amount of dissolved solute.
A diluted solution is one that has a relatively small amount of dissolved so-
lute. The concentration of a solution may be expressed in terms of percentage
(by mass. by volume, or by mass-volume).

Application

Solutions are formed when two or more substances combine in such a

way that you cannot distinguish one component from the other. It is im-
portant to know the right amount of solute and solvent to combine in order to
produce the desired product. Preparing solutions of a desired concentration is
necessary in production of food and drinks, household materials and medi-
cines. It also applies to agriculture in maintaining the correct pH of soil and
in industries in the manufacture of cars and other vehicles.

Reflect
We encounter solutions all the time. The food that we eat, the medi-
cines we take, the household items that we use are just some examples of so-
lutions that we use every day. Knowing the concentration of solutions is es-
sential in helping us manage and handle such materials properly.
