Concept Notes

In research, it is a must that a systematic plan be followed to explore, describe,

examine, explain and predict a natural phenomenon, human behavior or a social issue
or social problem. To pursue quality research, the use of scientific method is a
prerequisite. Scientific method refers to a systematic, organized series of steps that
ensures maximum objectivity and consistency in investigating phenomenon, acquiring
new knowledge or correcting and integrating previous knowledge. For a research to be
termed scientific, a method of inquiry must be based on gathering observable,
empirical and measurable evidence subject to specific principles of reasoning,

A scientific inquiry follows a process which indicates specific steps and key
questions/s as guide to pursue a social research interest:

I. Thinking Phase
1. Determine the research problem and purpose
2. Establish context
a. Literature review
b. Conceptual/theoretical framework
II. Planning Phase
1. Determine the Research Design
2. Determine the Sampling Procedure
3. Develop and Pilot Test Data Collection Strategies
4. Plan for Data Analysis
5. Address Ethical Considerations
III. Implementing Phase
1. Recruit subjects or respondents
2. Collect data
3. Establish validity and reliability
4. Procure data for analysis
IV. Analyzing Phase
1. Analyze data
a. Quantitative
b. qualitative
2. Interpret the data
V. Utilizing Phase
1. Determine audience and dissemination strategy
2. Apply findings on practical settings

Activity 1: Concept Map

Directions: You have learned the steps of research process. Take note that this
research process is systematically laid from start to finish. You cannot interchange it
since each stage contains specific tasks. For your activity, complete the concept map
showing the steps of research process. Use the words below.

-directs ethical concerns in research - planning phase

- data are interpreted - utilizing phase
-Selection for respondents/ subjects - implementing phase
-application of findings on practical setting - collect data
-identifying and delimiting of the research problem -planning for data analysis
-Choosing for the appropriate research design
-identify the sampling procedure
-establish the review of literature and theoretical framework
-planning on strategy on how findings are disseminated
