Course Question Question

Outcome #
Codes
CO2 1. An open cylindrical tank, 2.4 m in diameter and 6m tall has 1m of glycerin (sg=1.5), 2.5m of
water, and 1.5m of oil (sg=0.82). Determine the discharge through the 125mm diameter located
at the bottom of the tank. Assume C=0.65
CO2 2. A vertical circular gate or radius r is submerged in a liquid with the top edged flushed on the
liquid surface. Determine the magnitude and location of the total force acting on one side of the
gate.
CO2 3. A vertical cylindrical tank, open at the top, is filled with a liquid. Its sides are held in position by
means of two steel hoops, one at the top and the other at the bottom. Determine the ratio of
the stress in the upper hoop to that in the lower hoop.
CO2 4. Find the width b of the rectangular concrete dam necessary to prevent the dam from sliding. The
depth of water in one side is 4.5 m and the height of the dam is 6 meters. The sg of concrete is
2.4 and the coefficient of friction between the base of the dam and the foundation is 0.4. Use
1.5 as the factor of safety against sliding. Is the dam also safe from overturning?
CO2 5. A vertical cylindrical tank, open at the top, is filled with a liquid. Its sides are held in position by
means of two steel hoops, one at the top and the other at the bottom. Determine the ratio of
the stress in the upper hoop to that in the lower hoop.
CO2 6. A cylindrical tank container 8m high and 3m in diameter is reinforced with two hoops 1 meter
from each end. When it is filled with water, what is the tension in each hoop due to water?
CO2 7. An iceberg having specific gravity of 0.92 is floating on salt water on sp.g. 1.03. If the volume of
ice above the water surface is 1000 cu.m., what is the total volume of the ice?
