Situated in San Jose, Malaybalay City, Bukidnon is The Monastery of the
Transfiguration popularly known for its pyramid-shaped chapel. Home of the
Benedictine monks, this monastery exhibits the values of noble simplicity, sense of
balance, and harmony. Nestled in the spectacular hills of Bukidnon, the Transfiguration
Abbey was founded in 1983 by the first Filipino Benedictine abbot, Father Eduardo
Africa, OSB. However, hardly ten years after it was
inaugurated, the original monastery church became
too small for countless worshippers and pilgrims.
With the help of benefactors, the new church was
inaugurated on August 6, 1996. This chapel that was
designed by the Filipino National Artist for
Architecture, Leandro Locsin has been dubbed by
many as a “Magnum Opus” which means “Great
Work”.

Also known as 'The Poet of Space', Leandro

Locsin is accustomed to incorporating Filipino living
patterns and has frequently associated local and
vernacular spatial qualities in his designs. With this, his inspiration for the
Transfiguration was the traditional bahay kubo composed of bamboo and nipa. For
instance, if the black steel rafter-columns, and the hardwood placed horizontally of the
Church's ceilings are reimagined as bamboo and nipa respectively, then, the very
interior of the bahay kubo can be idealized. In addition to this, Locsin seems to have
been also inspired by the Ifugao huts in the Cordilleras. This is because a cluster of the
pyramid-roofed huts hunched over the terraced slopes resemble giant mushrooms on a
carpet of green velvet.
