Performance Task 4
Mirrors and Lenses

I. Direction: Draw a ray diagram and the image formed for each of the following cases.
Determine the mirror/lens used and locate the object’s position. Then, describe the image formed
using the PISO acronym.
P: Position of image
I: Image type (real or virtual)
S: Size of image (same size, smaller, larger than object)
O: Orientation of image (erect, inverted)

Ray Diagram Description

Case 1

Mirror used:
Concave Mirror

Object’s position:
Infront of the mirror

P: Somewhere
between C & F

I: Real

S: Smaller

O: Inverted
Case 2

Mirror used:
Convex Mirror

Diverging Lens

Object’s position:
Somewhere between
2f and f

P: Somewhere
Between f and optical
center

I: Virtual
S: Smaller
O: Erect

II. Problem Solving

1. The focal length of a concave mirror is 2 meters. An object is positioned 8 meters in front of the
mirror. Where is the image of this object formed?
2. A converging thin lens has a focal length of 27 centimeters. An object is placed 9
centimeters from the lens. How far from the lens is the image of this object formed?
III. Applying Geometric Optic Concepts
Problem 1. You want to design a lens for your classmate who finds it hard to see far objects.
What kind of eye defect does your classmate have and what will be the design of the lens?
 My classmate's eye issue is nearsightedness, also known as myopia, which is a
common vision impairment in which items close to you are clear while objects
further away are blurry. My classmate's lens will be concave because nearsighted
people can't see far objects clearly since the lens and retina are longer than they
should be. Furthermore, when concave lenses are positioned in front of a
nearsighted eye, light refraction is minimized and focus length is extended,
allowing the picture formed on the retina to be clearly viewed.

Problem 2. Your aunt is complaining about her difficulty in reading at a close distance. How
should you address her problem? What could her eye defect be?
 My aunt has farsightedness, also known as hyperopia, which is a common visual
issue in which you can see far objects clearly but nearby objects are hazy. The
best suggestion I can give her is to see a doctor so that she can get the therapy
she needs for her ailment. However, convex lenses will aid her in reading at a
close range since the focal point of the eye falls behind the retina when the
distance between the retinas is too small.
