You sense that the ground is shaking what do you do?
As with any emergency, the first thing to do is to STAY CALM.
Sometimes if the earthquake has a magnitude of 4 or less, you can confuse ground
shaking with dizziness.
Once you've confirmed that there is an earthquake, your first option is to briskly move to
an open area if it is safe to do so.
• Make sure that you follow the evacuation route and to protect your head and
neck while in transit.
If you are unable to safely move because of intense ground shaking, you will have to
perform the Duck-Cover-Hold maneuver.
Find a sturdy table and duck under it to protect yourself from objects that may fall on
you.
Even without a table, the idea is to lower your body's surface area to minimize the
chances of getting struck by falling objects.
• Avoid going under tables with wheels, as these can move during ground shaking.
A common question is, "What if my whole body cannot fit in the only table available in
the room?"
• YOU will have to prioritize your head and neck to cover for survival.
Once the ground shaking stops, quickly proceed to an open area again following the
evacuation route.
Be alert for aftershocks. In case of one, do the DUCK-COVER-HOLD again until it stops.

What to do during, before, and after an Earthquake.
Ground rapture, Ground Shaking, Liquefaction, Landslide, and Tsunami may happen.
BEFORE:
Make sure that your house is sturdy. Make sure that hanging objects are well put, to
avoid them from falling. Make sure to arrange heavy objects on the bottom part of the
cabinet, instead of putting it on top of the cabinet. Make sure to put poisonous or
flammable chemicals on a secured place. Make it a habit to make sure gas tanks are
closed when not in use.
Know emergency exits, the fastest and safest exit routes. Learn how to use the Fire
Extinguisher and Emergency Alarms. (These should have proper signages and can be
easily accessed)
DURING:
Stay calm. Do the duck-cover-hold maneuver. Duck, Cover your body, and hold on to
the table's legs.
If a table is not available, lower your body and cover you head and neck with your
hand. Avoid objects that are heavy, may break immediately, and may fall.
*IF OUTSIDE:
Stay away from, posts, buildings, trees and other things that may fall down or collapse. It
is better to stay at an open space.
IF DRIVING:
- Drivers should stop their cars and avoid elevated roads, etcs.
Tsunamis
• “Harbor wave”
• From Japan which is geographically vulnerable to tsunamis
• Happens with little to no warning
• Sudden displacement of ocean water
• Triggered by eruptions, landslides, meteorites, and earthquakes
• Rolls out of the ocean to further places up at a pace up to 600 mph
• Friction between the wave and the shoreline slows it down and raises its height
up to 100ft as it reaches the shore
• Does not crest and break like normal waves
• Moves forward like a solid wall of water
• Recedes and drags everything back into the ocean
• Has several waves that go on for hours = more destruction
•
What you can do:
• Run to the top floor of a building at least 30 feet high
• Run inland at least 2km away from the shore
• Japan
• Claimed 16,000 lives
