Chimneys shall be subject to Special Inspection per
Section BC 1704.26. The Authority shall witness all smoke
tests. Perform the tests when the school is not occupied.
Isolate the boiler and emergency and/or standby generator
per Section MC 811.1.5 from the tests. No work shall be
covered or concealed before testing. The Contractor shall

caps, etc.) in all openings, connecting a blower and
providing instrumentation (static pressure taps, etc.).
The Authority’s Special Inspector shall provide smoke
machines, smoke bombs, or other equivalent methods to fill
the chimney and breeching chimney connector with a thick
penetrating smoke. As the smoke appears at the chimney
opening on the roof, such opening shall be tightly closed
and a pressure equivalent to 1/2" column of water measured
at the base of the chimney, shall be applied. Test shall
be applied for a length of time sufficient to permit
inspection of the chimney. If the test shows any evidence

and all buildings in Seismic Design Category B.

2. When existing chimneys are to remain, the condition of the flue

clay lining or firebrick in the existing chimney shall be
examined. If existing clay lining or firebrick does not supply
an effective insulation barrier due to deterioration or the
existing mortar cannot withstand the high stack temperatures,
the 10-gage stainless steel stack shall additionally be
insulated. This additional insulation shall be defined in the
contract drawings if required.

3. Exhausts from engine to silencer shall be Schedule 40 welded

pipe insulated in accordance with Section 15512. Exhausts
downstream of the silencer may be either double wall chimneys as
described in this section or may be Schedule 40 welded pipe
