ELECTRONICALLY CONTROLLED 138 HYDRAULIC SYSTEM
Fault finding - Introduction 38
This document introduces the fault finding strategy applicable on all the computers in the ABS/traction
control of the Scénic 4x4 (computer identification: PR012 = 240.5).
The following are thus required to carry out fault finding on this system:
● Use of one of the fault finding tools to identify the system fitted in the vehicle (reading the computer family, the
program no., the vdiag, ...).
● Read the faults recorded in the computer memory and use the "fault interpretation" section of the documents.
Reminder: Each fault is interpreted for a particular type of fault storage (fault present, fault stored, fault present or
stored). The tests defined for dealing with each fault should therefore only be applied to the vehicle if the fault
detected by the fault finding tool is interpreted in the document for its type of storage. The type of storage should
be considered when the fault finding tool is used after the ignition has been switched off and on again.
If a fault is interpreted when it is "stored", the conditions for application of the fault finding strategy are listed in the
"Notes" box. If these conditions are not met, use the fault finding strategy to check the circuit of the faulty
component because the fault is no longer present on the vehicle. Use the same procedure if a fault is shown as
stored by the fault finding tool and is only interpreted in the documentation for a "present" fault.
● Carry out the conformity check (show possible malfunctions not yet detected by the system self diagnosis
procedure) and apply the associated fault finding strategy according to the results.
● Use of the fault finding strategy for the "customer complaint" if the problem persists.
Reminders
When an intermittent fault is stored, the ABS warning light will illuminate the next time the vehicle is used until the
car reaches 7.5mph (12 km/h). When the fault is stored, a counter linked to the fault is initialised with a value of 40.
This counter value will be decremented each time the ignition is switched on if the fault is not present when the
vehicle speed exceeds 7.5 mph (12 km/h).
When the counter value is equal to 1, it is not decremented any further and the fault is not erased.
When the dialogue is established between the diagnostic tool and the ABS computer, the ABS and EBD (Electronic
Brakeforce Distribution) functions are interrupted, which gives rise to a risk of loss of control of the vehicle under
emergency braking. For this reason, the dialogue is cut as soon as the vehicle speed exceeds 6 mph (10 km/h) to
reestablish ABS and EBD function.

Tachymetric index programming
PRESENT
NOTES None
The Bosch 5.3 ABS computer with the "tachymetry button" supplies the vehicle speed signal to all the users of
this information in the vehicle (instrument panel, engine management, ...).
This vehicle speed signal replaces that supplied by the speed sensor located on the gearbox.
The ABS computer calculates the vehicle speed from the speed of the wheels and the circumference of the
tyres fitted on the vehicle.
The tyre circumference must be programmed into the memory of a new computer. This consists of
entering an index "X" through the fault finding tool using the "TACHYMETRIC INDEX" command.
Once the index has been entered using the "tachymetric index" command, erase the computer memory and
then switch off the ignition. Use the PR030 "Tachymetric index" parameter to check that the index has been
entered correctly.

USE OF COMMAND MODES:
Control of the wheel solenoid valves in order to check the hydraulic system:
Lift the vehicle in order to be able to turn the wheels and check that they turn freely.
Keep the brake pedal depressed to prevent the wheel from being turned by hand (do not brake so firmly that full
brake power is reached).
Select and validate the control of the wheel being examined ("Front left wheel solenoid valves", ...)
Keep the brake pedal depressed and check the "Pump motor test" control.
Pump motor and solenoid valve control: (This test permits a re-run of the actuator test
carried out when the ignition was switched on.)
Keep the brake pedal depressed and check the "Actuator static test" control.
Apply the procedure described in the "Bleeding the circuits" section of the "Repair method" Technical Note.

REPLACING THE COMPUTER:
Once the index has been entered using the tachymetric index command, erase the computer memory and
then switch off the ignition. Use the PR030 Tachymetric index parameter to check that the index has been
entered correctly.

Chart 1 NO DIALOGUE WITH THE ABS COMPUTER
NOTES None.
Ensure that the fault finding tool is not the cause of the fault by trying to communicate with a computer on
another vehicle. If the tool is not the cause of the fault and dialogue cannot be established with any other
computer on the same vehicle, it may be that a faulty computer is disrupting fault finding lines K and L.
Disconnect the connections one at a time to locate the fault.
Check the battery voltage and carry out the necessary operations to obtain a correct voltage (9.5 volts <
battery voltage > 17.5 volts).
Check the presence and the condition of the ABS fuse on the passenger compartment fuse board (5 A).
Check the computer connector connection and its condition.
Check the ABS earths (tighten the two earth screws above the ABS assembly).
Check that the computer is correctly supplied:
– Earth on track 19 of the 31-track connector.
– + after ignition on track 15 of the 31-track connector.
If dialogue is still not established following these various checks, change the ABS computer.

Chart 8 Locking of one or more wheels
NOTES Only consult this customer complaint after a complete check using the fault finding tool.
Reminder: The locking of wheels on a vehicle fitted with ABS or grating of the tyres, which feels like locking
to the customer, may be linked to normal operation of the system and should not always be
considered a fault:
– Locking is allowed below 3.75 mph ( 6 km/h) (the system will not provide regulation).
– Braking with ABS regulation on very poor roads (significant grating).
– .................
However, if the wheels are actually locking, hoist the vehicle in order to be able to turn the wheels and check:
– For possible reversal of the connection of the speed sensors.
Use parameters PR001, PR002, PR003 and PR004 turning the associated wheels and check the
consistency of the results obtained.
If the value measured is zero, turn the other wheels to confirm an electrical reversal of the sensors and repair
the wiring.
– For possible reversal of the pipes at the hydraulic unit.
Use the "Front left wheel solenoid valves", "Front right wheel solenoid valves", "Rear left wheel solenoid
valves" and "Rear right wheel solenoid valves" commands while depressing the brake pedal and check for
the occurrence of ten unlocking / locking cycle on the wheel concerned (see the "Help" section). If the 10
cycles are not carried out on the wheel tested (wheel remains locked), check whether they are carried out
on another wheel (confirmation of a reversal: repair).
If the 10 cycles are not carried out on a wheel without reversal of the pipes, change the hydraulic unit.
Check the condition of the ABS targets and that they are correct to specification (condition and 44 teeth).
Also check the sensor / target air gap by rotating each wheel.
0.3 mm < air gap on one revolution of a front wheel < 1.5 mm
0.2 mm < air gap on one revolution of a rear wheel < 1.4 mm
If the fault persists following these checks, change the hydraulic unit.

Unexpected ABS operation at low speeds and when little pressure applied to

brake pedal
NOTES Only consult this customer complaint after a complete check using the fault finding tool.
Brake pedal vibrations may be felt which are connected to the reactions of the system in particular situations:
– crossing rumble strips,
– tight cornering with lifting of the inside rear wheel.
These vibrations may be associated with the simple activation of the brake compensator when pressure on the
rear axle is limited.
If the problem is different, check the speed sensors connectors ( micro-breaks) as well as the air gaps.
