Factors to consider in purchasing and wearing clothes

Shopping for clothes can turn out to be a rewarding and relaxing activity or a daunting
experience. It all depends on your attitude and approach. So as not to be disappointed in your
purchases, you have to be careful and pay attention to little details.

1. The flexibility and width of a shoe

Many shoes on the market look fashionable, but they are not good for your feet. When
buying shoes, try to bend and twist them to check their flexibility. A shoe should bend under the
ball of the foot, and there should be some resistance when twisting. When trying on the shoes,
walk on hard surfaces as well as carpet to see how the shoe feels on both.

Pay attention not only to the length but also to the width. Make sure there is enough room
to slightly wiggle your toes. If you can't move your toes at all, the shoes are too tight.

2. The ply of a cashmere sweater

If you are aiming to buy a cashmere sweater, check the ply: most cashmere yarns are 2-
ply, meaning that 2 threads are tightly intertwined to create one stronger one. Multiple-ply yarns
are stronger, thicker, and more durable than single-ply ones. When knitted, one side of a single-
ply stitch looks wider than the other side, which appears to form one continuous vertical column.

3. Matching patterns

In high-quality clothes, patterns (plaid or horizontal stripes) should match up at the seams
and sleeves. Manufacturers of cheap clothes often skip this detail to keep costs affordable
because matching often means cutting out the individual pieces of the garment. However,
mismatching can be exaggerated to give a garment an eccentric look.

4. The perfect length for jeans

For women, the choice depends on the type of jeans. With ankle pants, the hem should be
positioned just above or right on your ankle bone; skinny jeans should offer a clean, ankle-length
look; straight jeans should cover the top of your feet. Remember to choose clothes that fit
your body type.
When choosing jeans for men, go for those that are long enough to cover the socks but
short enough not to cover the shoes.

5. The quality of the fabric

Always check the label. Even though synthetic fabric is cheaper and often blended with
natural materials, it doesn't last as well as natural fabric does with repeated laundering. Hold the
fabric up to the light to judge its weight and the density of the weave.

Finally, check the seams on both the inside and outside of the garment. It is a warning
sign if they are sloppy, loose, or stitched over multiple times.

6. Don't trust the size on the label.

Although a standard sizing chart was used in the past, most brands today seem to develop
their own sizing system. Another problem with sizes is so-called "vanity sizing." According
to research, a size 8 dress today is about the same as a size 16 dress in 1958. Therefore, you
should always try different sizes on, and choose the one that fits best.

7. Dress for shopping success.

If you are going to buy shoes, wear a pair that you can easily slip on and off. In general,
choose comfortable clothes for your shopping trip, but wear the undergarments you would wear
under the clothes you plan to purchase.

8. The time of year

Some things may be cheaper during a certain month or even day than others. According
to ShopItToMe.com, Thursday is the best day to buy handbags, and Monday is perfect for
buying sunglasses and dress pants. In January, suits and winter garments typically go on sale,
and autumn is the best time of year to buy jeans.

9. Mandatory waiting period

Do not buy an item you like immediately. Some sources advise waiting for about a week
after you see an item in the store. Often, after this waiting period is over, you decide that you
don't really want it and never go back. Remember that, according to financial planners, you
should not spend more than 5% of your salary on clothes.

5 Places to Shop for Clothes

When shopping in person, you can try clothes on, see how they fit, and feel the materials and
craftsmanship of each piece. Another benefit of shopping in person is the option to ask questions;
don’t be afraid to talk to sales associates, who can offer a wealth of information about different
clothing styles. There are several types of stores to choose from, and your shopping experience
will be different depending on where you go.

1. Boutiques: Boutiques have a curated selection of clothing that hews to a certain

aesthetic. They are usually small, which means you can develop a relationship with the
people who work there. Typically, boutiques carry several designer brands, and they can
be a great way to discover local and unique items. Finding a boutique with an aesthetic
you love is a great way to develop your personal style.

2. Department stores: Big department stores carry a huge selection of products from
different brands. Clothing is organized into categories, from formalwear to swimwear to
activewear to sleepwear. Department stores are a great place to go if you're revamping
your entire closet, since they have the largest selection of products. Feeling
overwhelmed? Look at the mannequins. When you see an outfit you like, ask a sales
associate to help you achieve that exact look or general vibe.

3. Fast-fashion chains: Fast-fashion chains offer trendy clothing at lower prices. Fast-
fashion stores operate much like department stores, selling a range of products, from
blazers to sweatshirts. Clothing in fast-fashion stores is usually all one brand, so sizing
and pricing tends to be more consistent.

4. Thrift stores: From vintage boutiques to consignment stores to discount thrift chains,
thrift stores vary widely in the type of clothes they carry. You can find high-quality
clothes at thrift stores, as well as unique vintage pieces, but you may have to dig through
many items to find your size and style. When thrift shopping, it’s best not to have a
specific piece in mind—rather, bring your mood board, wish list, and an open mind.

5. Online: Shopping online is a good strategy if you’re looking for a specific item, since
you’ll be able to browse a much larger selection than you’d ever find in a single store.
Start from a wide pool of options by searching for the item you’re looking for, and then
narrow the results by color, size, material, and price. The advantage of shopping online is
that you can compare items from thousands of brands. The disadvantage, obviously, is
that you won’t be able to try clothing on before you place your order. Since every brand
sizes clothing differently, check the size chart and read the reviews to get a better idea of
how the clothes fit. Always research the company’s return policy to ensure that they offer
free returns, in case you want to order more than one size.

11 Tips for Shopping for Clothes

Bring home clothing that you’ll actually wear by following these shopping tips.

1. Set a clothing budget. When you have a number to work with, it’s easier to plan your
shopping trips and avoid overspending. One way to make a budget is to list all the
clothing you think you’ll need to buy in one year, then estimate how much you’d like to
spend on each item. Once you have a total, hold yourself to it, and don’t spend more.

2. Use a mood board. Your mood board is a collection of images of clothing that you like;
it helps you craft your personal style and serves as a source of inspiration when you’re
clothes shopping. Notice commonalities between the images you’ve selected—are there
specific colors, textures, and styles you consistently gravitate toward? When selecting
pieces, see if they align with the overall style of your mood board.

3. Keep a wish list. Keep a running list of clothing items that you want or need. When you
go shopping, glance over the list to remind yourself what you’re actually looking for.
Shopping from a list is usually more successful than heading out with one specific item in
mind—you may not find everything you want on the first try, but over multiple shopping
trips, you can generally check off most of the items on your list. When online shopping,
bookmark your favorite items and return to them when the brand has a sale.

4. Know your measurements. Keep a note on your phone with your hip, waist, and chest
measurements. This will help with online shopping, allowing you to compare your
measurements with a store’s size chart. When clothes shopping in person, you can bring a
measuring tape to check if a piece will fit before you even try it on. This is especially
helpful when shopping secondhand, since vintage sizing can be very different from
modern sizing.

5. Start broad, then edit. Whether you’re shopping online or at a brick-and-mortar

clothing store, add all the items you like to your shopping cart, then edit down your
options from there. By bringing many pieces together, you’ll be better able to compare
them and decide which ones you like. There are bound to be pieces that don’t work out
and other pieces that surprise you. By branching out a little, you can find hidden gems.

6. Make a list of items you already own. When considering a new item, make a mental list
of the pieces from your closet you’ll be able to wear with it. Unless you’re building a
brand-new wardrobe from scratch, you’ll probably want this new piece to play well with
several items you already own. If a cardigan you’re coveting doesn’t work with any of
the clothes you have at home, consider why that may be. Are you trying to move your
style in a different direction? If a piece doesn’t go with anything else you own, it may not
be right for you. Of course, there are exceptions—statement pieces that work all on their
own, or clothes for special occasions. When you get home, try on the piece with your
other clothing. If it doesn’t work, return it.

7. Diversify your wardrobe. It’s easy to gravitate toward the same safe pieces. But there’s
only so many black dresses or dark-wash denim jeans any one person needs. Having
multiples of the same item can add unnecessary bulk to your closet, making it harder to
get dressed. If you find something you like but already own something similar, ask
yourself: Do I like this version better than what I currently have? How many of these do I
really want? The answer usually isn’t more than two, except when it comes to your work
uniform.

8. Bring a friend. Shopping is more fun with friends, and a second opinion can be
extremely helpful. If you’re unsure about a piece, a friend can give you the confidence to
try it or let you know if the piece doesn’t seem like “you.” Ask a friend or family member
whose aesthetic you admire to go on a shopping trip with you—they'll probably be
flattered.

9. Always try on multiple sizes. When you find something you like, grab it in your size as
well as the sizes above and below. Maybe try it in a few different colors. Bring as many
pieces into the fitting room as you can, and take as much time in there as you need—see
how a piece feels when you bend down, sit, or twirl.

10. Go window shopping. Window shopping can provide inspiration. If you see something
you love at a designer shop but the price is too high, add it to your wish list and see if you
can find a more suitable version elsewhere. This is also a great way to find styling ideas
for your mood board.
11. Put clothing items on hold. If you’re on the fence about an item, ask the store if you can
put it on hold. Many stores will hold an item until the end of the day, giving you time to
decide. Walk around for an hour, and see if you’re still thinking about the piece when you
come back. For online shopping, simply place an item in your cart and wait a day or two
before buying—or bookmark it in your wish list folder.

How to shop Quality Clothes

Why Cheap Clothing Isn’t Really Cheap…

I know how tempting it is to buy cheap clothing. Clothing retailers like H&M and Target
have mastered the art of offering low-quality but still reasonably cool clothes. And whether
we’re in a recession or not, it’s hard to resist a $20 trench coat.
But think about this for a moment: How much quality can you really get with a $10 dress
at H&M? How long is that $15 sweater from Target really going to last you?
I can tell you from experience that the answer is “not long.” And, I’m sure you’ve
probably experienced the same thing yourself.
My point here is that cheap clothing isn’t really that cheap at all. You might be getting a
bargain at first, but it’s not going to last over the long haul.

Why Buy Quality Clothing?

High-quality clothing is made with care, which means it’s going to last. I strongly believe that I
save money by spending a bit more on clothing for several reasons:

1. You don’t buy on impulse.

When you focus on buying quality, and quality only, you’re unlikely to buy something on
impulse because it’s cheap and looks cool.
This means that the clothes in your closet really mean something to you. They’re chosen
with thought and consideration, and they’re chosen because they really say something about you
in a meaningful way.
I have far fewer clothes than I did this time last year. But the ones I do have are really
special to me. I’ll likely still have them years from now.

2. Your clothes last longer.

Quality clothing lasts longer. Unlike Wal-Mart clothing which usually falls apart after a
dozen washes or so, high-quality clothing can stand up to some serious wear. You’re getting
more out of your investment when you spend more up front.

How to Save Money and What to Look For When Buying Quality Clothing
If you want to transition your own wardrobe from “disposable” fashion to high-quality pieces,
don’t underestimate the power of buying pre-worn clothing. It’s a great way to get designer
clothes on a budget that still have plenty of “wear” left in them. Try following these tips:

1. Know What You Want

My own wardrobe transition started with one piece of clothing: a James Perse shirt. This
Los Angeles designer makes simple but high quality clothing. I stumbled onto one of his pieces
at my local Salvation Army ($3.99!) and promptly fell in love with his clothes. My search for
discounted James Perse clothing led me to other designers I really love as well.
I’ve since found two other James Perse tops at the Salvation Army. Both, of course,
were second-hand clothes, and have now been heavily worn by me. They still look brand new.
My point here is that it helps to find a few designers or lines that really speak to you and
your budget. Once you find a designer or line of clothing that really fits well and looks great on
you, then scour eBay and your local thrift stores looking for them.

2. Go Slowly
This is a process that takes time, so it’s best not to rush it. Be prepared to come up empty-
handed time and time again.
If you can enjoy the process, you’ll find yourself having quite a bit of fun. After all, it’s
super easy to hit the mall and fill up a bag full of Abercrombie and Gap. But where’s the fun in
that? Scouring consignment shops and thrift stores is like looking for treasure. And when you
score second hand designer clothes for a few bucks, you’re going to feel like a million.
Now, this isn’t to say that all my quality clothing has been bought second-hand. It hasn’t.
In fact, the sweater I’m wearing as I write this is a piece I paid full price for (well, actually, it
was on sale). But most of what I buy is pre-worn. Again, eBay is a great place to find good deals
once you’ve found a designer you like.

3. Know Quality
You’re eventually going to come across a piece you love, but have no idea who made it.
It’s happened to me plenty of times.
It helps to learn how to recognize a quality piece of clothing when you see it.
Start by looking at the seams. Are they sewn properly? Grip the fabric on both sides of
the seam and pull gently. If the thread holding the seams together pulls apart slightly, it’s not
sewn properly.
Look at other details. Is there top-stitching? Are there four buttons on the cuff rather than
three? Is there any bead work? Is there a 2-inch hem for pants? Are the buttons or fasteners sewn
on securely?
All these tiny, subtle details point to a high-quality garment over a cheap one.

4. Go for a Test Run

I know it’s hard to learn how to recognize quality at first. You can shorten your learning
curve by heading to a high-quality boutique or retailer, like Saks or Macy’s. Go find high-quality
designer clothes and look closely at the details mentioned in step 3. Try on the clothing and see
how it feels.
You’ll likely notice an immediate difference. These clothes are simply better made, and
you can feel it.

6 TIPS TO BUY HIGH QUALITY CLOTHES

1. CHECK THE LABEL
This should be your very first step after it catches your eye. Check for the garments fiber content
and size up what it is made out of. Most high-quality clothing is made out of 100% natural fibers. This list
will include fibers extracted from plants and animals like cotton, wool, linen, silk, leathers and snakeskin.

2. DO THE 80/20 TEST

Sometimes designers use synthetic materials for design reasons, but be very cautions of blended
fibers. Most use some form of polyester, acrylic, spandex, rayon, and other manmade fibers made
from plastics and even petrochemicals. A solid way to always decipher if you’re getting good
quality is to do the 80/20 test. This means that at the bare minimum, 80% of your garment should
be made out of natural fibers and 20% out of synthetic fibers for it to be considered of quality.

3. CATCH THE FEEL

Take your hand literally feel the weight, stretch, and softness of the garment or product.
Is it light, rough, brittle or thin? If it is, more than likely it is of lower quality. High-end clothing
is often of a heavier weight because it is made out of real fibers, metals, and embellishments.
However, a fabric doesn’t necessarily need to be heavy to be good. If the yarns are tightly
packed but thin, the cloth can still be lightweight. What you’re looking for is density. Also, a
great garment is going the feel smooth and soft to the touch, almost like butter. There won’t be
any nicks that scratch you and snags that catch you off guard.

4. LOOK AT THE CONSTRUCTION

When it comes to the how your garment is made, there are key things to consider.
For knits in particular, try stretching a small part of the fabric opposite of the grain. It should
ideally bounce back to its original shape. If it doesn’t, it won’t when you wear it either.
Fabric, of course, isn’t the only element that matters. It’s important to check the seams as
well. Stitches should be even, closely spaced and lying flat on the garment. This holds true for
the inside of the garment as well. Look inside and check if seams look sloppy or if there are spots
where they appear loose or stitched over multiple times, those are clear warning signs that this
isn't a well-made item..

5. WATCH OUT FOR MISSED STEPS

This might be one of the most obvious ways to tell at glance if a garment or product lives
up to the hype. If product has a print on it or embellishments throughout but mysteriously misses
the complete backside of it, then please click next. A great design will have its print covering the
entire garment, no questions asked. Some other things your garment should have are sturdy
button holes, interfacing, inner binding, and fabrics should be cut either straight along the grain,
or in the case of a bias cut, on a clear angle, usually 45 degrees, which allows for the fabric to
stretch.

6. SEE WHERE IT’S MADE

Many manufacturers have gotten smart with this step and have found loopholes with
labeling. Most likely if the country of origin is not listed or just says “Imported” then it means it
was not made in a highly regarded country of craftsmanship.
