DAY 1

"The Conquerors' First Battle"

February twelve of two thousand and eighteen was a brand new day to freshly start our first

day of our work immersion. It all started in a cold and shivery morning. The sun is about to

radiate out of its shelter and chirps of the crickets are all gone.

We begin our travel with a prayer and up until we reach to our destination. Worry, anxiety and

nervousity enveloped us while we're still inside the jeepney. Various emotions mixed with pure

excitements were greatly evident in our faces.

Upon the arrival at the lobby of the hospital, we were approached by the HR staff and was

brought to the conference room for a brief orientation. We have discussed the institution's

tagline and how were it related to the mission and vision of the hospital. We were also asked to

answer few questions given by the staff and some chosen person was requested to answer.

Later while, we tour around the vicinity and was introduced to the different departments. From

the pharmacy to three different nurse station and down to the laboratory.

After few rounds, we were distributed to each of the departments. Luckily, I was assigned to

Private Station 1 (PS1) which handles only few bed capacity with one patient inside. The very

first word we really heard out from the mouth of the nurses is "ayaw mo pag-nursing kay

kapoy" which later on, I've got to realized their intention of saying such. Charting, visiting of the

patient's room, and assisting doctors during rounds are just some of the work of the nurses

which I've got to really observed on our first day of our work immersion.
At first, we are quite intimitated especially that we're dealing with healthcare professionals. It is

our greatest challenge to have encountered different people with different attitude and

personality. We find it awkward to casually open a topic considering the fact that its just our

first time working in that kind of people. We were bothered and anxious at the same time. But

few hours after, we coped up by bravely initiating a short conversation to the staffs. We slowly

adjusted to our working environment. We communicate effectively and efficiently responded to

our work supervisors especially when asked for a small favor. One of our work supervisors

brought us to see feeding patients eat through a Nasogastric tube (NGT). They also told us

many layman terms in which we really noted it in our notebooks for future purposes and uses.

Isotonic, hypotonic and hypertonic are some of its terms.

Our first day of our work immersion was indeed tiring yet absolutely fun. New learnings and

new knowledge. After all, Nurse Marie Louie P. Narte, a staff nurse of PS1 leave us a short

saying which brought us to many learnings and realizations.

"Everyone can be a nurse but not everyone have the heart to be a nurse." - Marie Louie P.
