The most significant is the place and date the event on the caricature occur, this served as a
reminder for us Filipino people the Philippine History thought us.

2. What meanings can you derive from the visuals?


A filipino guy in the persona of Juan Dela Cruz, a salakot and a barong tagalog which is our
national costume. Also, the historical place and capital of the Philippines, Manila.

5. What was happening at the time in history it was created?
It was American Era (1900-1941)
6. Are there hidden messages? List down evidences from the cartoon that made you think
that led you to your conclusion
No hidden messages. Political cartoons and caricatures are modern art forms that exaggerate
human features. Art of such sort became a social and political commentary component of print
media that targeted individuals in power and authority. Rendered as effective tools, cartoons
exposed sentiments by employing symbolisms distinct from textual editorials and opinion
articles. These caricatures was scrutinized for the uniqueness of how opinion has been
represented through them and how the audience’s imagination was captured.
Use it as Historical Evidence

1. What did you find out from the document that you might not learn anywhere else?
What I found out on the document that I cannot learn from anywhere else is that Dr. Santos, a
politician from Tondo handing over his crown to Dr. Barcelona, his brother-in-law. There is also
Juan Dela Cruz, national personification of the Philippines representing the Filipinos wearing a
native salakot and national costume barong tagalog, he was attempting to forbid Dr. Santos to
give the crown to Dr. Barcelona.

2. What other documents or historical evidence are you going to use to help you understand
the event or topic?
Other documents or historical evidence will be the Periodicals in the book called, Philippine
Cartoons: Political Caricature of the American Era (1900-1941).
