Options - dryer switching

The regenerative dryer switching time is set for 2 hours by default in the options screen and is not accessible to
the Administrator user. While one dryer is in use, the other is burning off moisture that has accummulated in
the molecular sieve. You can select the Switch in 1 hour button to purge the dryer and switch. The one hour
wait time is needed to avoid having a hot moist dryer being used and allows for appropriate cooling time to the
dryer. Or select Menu/Status and press Switch Now to immediately switch the dryers. This is for
troubleshooting purposes only to see which side of the dryer is causing the problem, normal operation should
rely on the default 2 hour switching. Figure 21, Dryer warning on page 22 and Figure 12, Detector flow (flow
out) warning on page 13.

Safety
CAUTION: Follow all standard procedures for controlling electrostatic discharge (ESD). Most importantly,
wear a grounded wrist strap when handling any boards or electronic components.

Observe the following precautions whenever you open the cover or front bezel of the Itemiser® DX for service.

WARNING: User should use appropriate electrical safety precautions.

The Itemiser® DX is a 100/240 VAC device. Remove all electrical power from the device during servicing
whenever possible.
• Pull out the power plug from the rear of the chassis before opening and removing the cover or front
bezel
• Unplug P15 whenever working within the system. The internal battery puts voltage on the power
board at all times when plugged in.
Note: Some procedures require access to the interior while the system is powered up. Use extreme care at these times.
DO NOT TOUCH live electrical components or circuits.

CAUTION: ESD-approved protective measures required.

The Itemiser® DX contains electrostatic-discharge (ESD) sensitive components. Use standard ESD
preventative procedures and related protective equipment whenever servicing the system’s interior
components. Do not operate, ship, or store the Itemiser® DX near strong electrostatic or electromagnetic fields.

WARNING: User should use care when working near or on the labeled item.

The vapor desorption unit (desorber) is accessible from the front of the system. It contains heater elements that
exceed 200oC (392oF) in use. Use caution as directed when operating or maintaining this device.
NEVER insert any foreign object into the desorber when in use other than a sample or a calibration trap.
Perform maintenance on the desorber only when it has been taken off the system and all power has been
removed from it.
