Preface
This is the Itemiser® DX Technical Manual for model number P0007018-014. This document is a cross-
functional guide and reference that supports the field service representative in repairing and troubleshooting
the Itemiser® DX device.
Note: Supplemental documents, including technical bulletins and release notes, are not included in this manual.
Supporting Documents
Upon completion of any service activity to Itemiser® DX devices, please confirm that all supporting
documentation has been completed such as a return acceptance test or service quality report.

High Voltage Warning: User should use appropriate electrical safety precautions.
Hot Surface Warning: User should use care when working near or on the labeled item.
WARNING: The power cord must be disconnected from the device before servicing.
The Itemiser® detector contains a radioactive nickel 63 source of 10 millicuries (370 MBQ) strength. The
source is fully enclosed in the detector of the device that stops all primary radiation. The detector has
been designed in compliance with the United States Nuclear Regulatory commission (USNRC)
guidelines for safety. If a problem is suspected with the detector, DO NOT open the detector—call
Morpho Detection’s Technical Service Department. Then, if necessary, return the device to Morpho
Detection for service. Note that in some countries, notification of receipt and registration of the source
may be required by the national government body responsible for control of radioactive sources.
Note: An annual radiation wipe test is not required on this device in the United States. In other countries,
annual wipe testing may be required. Consult your local radiation governing body for requirements.
The detector must be disposed of properly in accordance with local, state, and Federal (or National)
regulations. Please contact your local hazardous waste disposal facility or Morpho Detection for proper
disposal methods.
CAUTION: Do not position the device so that it is difficult to operate the disconnecting device.

Menu Functions
Note: The Itemiser® DX keyboard is required to perform some of the functions described in this chapter.
This chapter discusses Administrator user Menu functions at a higher level with more detail than what was
covered in the user manual. Refer to the Itemiser® DX User Manual for information of all other menu functions.
1. Log on to the ITMS software as an Administrator user.
2. Click Menu. The Menu screen is displayed, which provides the Administrator with access to the
Menu buttons.

Users
The Administrator has the ability to add and modify users at their level and below. But only has the ability to
delete users below Administrator.
1. Restoring the default users can be done by selecting Menu/Advanced Menu/Restore Default Users.
2. Press Yes to confirm or No to cancel.
3. The default user levels and passwords are now restored.
Note: All users that were added to the system will be deleted.
Advanced Menu
Advanced menu functions were briefly discussed in the user manual. This section discusses certain advanced
menu functions in more detail to support the field in troubleshooting and repairing the system.
Note: A keyboard may be needed for some of the Advanced Menu functions.

Calibrate Temperatures
While troubleshooting a consistent stabilizing temperature warning this advanced menu function may need to
be executed after setting the desorber or detector temperatures according to the test procedure MP022788 or
when an internal hardware component is replaced. Otherwise, this function should not need to be executed. If
calibrating temperatures is done without a full understanding of the settings, you can render the system
inoperable.
1. Press Menu/Advanced Menu/Calibrate Temperatures.
2. A dialog box appears with the desorber and detector offset numbers. Verify the offsets are not greater
than 10 or less than -10. Press Yes to confirm and set the values or No to cancel.

Calibrate Flows
While troubleshooting a sample or detector flow warning this advanced menu function may need to be
executed after setting the flows according to the test procedure MP022788 or when an internal hardware
component is replaced. Otherwise, this function should not need to be executed. If calibrating flows is done
without a full understanding of the settings, you can render the system inoperable.
1. Press Menu/Advanced Menu/Calibrate Flows.
2. A dialog box appears with Would you like to calibrate the flow? message. Press Yes to continue or No
to cancel.
3. Upon pressing Yes, the system takes measurements of the on and off values for both the detector and
sample flows.

Troubleshooting Flowcharts
The flowcharts in this chapter assume that all routine maintenance procedures have been performed. Anywhere you see a
functional or voltage test referenced, refer to the Itemiser® DX System Test/Quality Report, Procedure Numbers MP022788
or MP082058 for procedures on how to conduct those tests.
Certain sections of system test/quality report may not be needed for troubleshooting and repairing the equipment. Only
perform tests that are referenced within the flow charts and/or the removal and replacement chapter..

Safety
CAUTION: Follow all standard procedures for controlling electrostatic discharge (ESD). Most importantly,
wear a grounded wrist strap when handling any boards or electronic components.
Observe the following precautions whenever you open the cover or front bezel of the Itemiser® DX for service.
The Itemiser® DX is a 100/240 VAC device. Remove all electrical power from the device during servicing
whenever possible.
• Pull out the power plug from the rear of the chassis before opening and removing the cover or front
bezel
• Unplug P15 whenever working within the system. The internal battery puts voltage on the power
board at all times when plugged in.
Note: Some procedures require access to the interior while the system is powered up. Use extreme care at these times.
DO NOT TOUCH live electrical components or circuits.
The Itemiser® DX contains electrostatic-discharge (ESD) sensitive components. Use standard ESD
preventative procedures and related protective equipment whenever servicing the system’s interior
components. Do not operate, ship, or store the Itemiser® DX near strong electrostatic or electromagnetic fields.
WARNING: User should use care when working near or on the labeled item.
The vapor desorption unit (desorber) is accessible from the front of the system. It contains heater elements that
exceed 200oC (392oF) in use. Use caution as directed when operating or maintaining this device.
NEVER insert any foreign object into the desorber when in use other than a sample or a calibration trap.
Perform maintenance on the desorber only when it has been taken off the system and all power has been
removed from it.
